The midwife’s joyful voice followed: "It’s born! It’s born!"
Xin He’s face was covered in sweat, her wet hair sticking to her face, her pale complexion devoid of any color, like she had lost all her strength and collapsed on the bed.
Shulan and Xiaoyu were ecstatic, nearly in tears: "Madam, the young master has been born safely, Madam!"
The maids had already prepared hot water to wash the child, and then wrapped him in a small cotton quilt. The midwife happily brought the child to Xin He: "Congratulations, Madam, on adding a little miss to the family."
By this point, Xin He didn’t even have the strength to lift a finger. She glanced at the child in the swaddle, and a faint smile appeared on her pale face.
Xiaoyu took the child and laughed: "Congratulations, Madam! When the master returns and sees that both the madam and the little miss are safe, he will surely be delighted too!"
The room was cleaned up quickly, so Xiaobei couldn’t help but rush in, followed by Little Chaihuo, Song Xi saw that both had gone and simply followed them in.
The maids outside were going to stop them at first, but couldn’t restrain them. Looking at the fact that there were only three children and one was the Madam’s younger brother, they didn’t bother anymore.
"Sister, how are you?" Xiaobei rushed in anxiously.
Xiaoyu smiled and said: "Madam has given birth to a little miss."
Xiaobei looked at the tiny baby with surprise. She was crying loudly, evidently still unaccustomed to this new world, but the midwife said that a baby crying loudly means she has a strong body, which is a good thing.
"Can I hold her?" Xiaobei looked at Xin He carefully.
Xin He managed a weak curve at the corner of her mouth.
Xiaobei happily took the child from Xiaoyu’s hands, caressing her gently. Then he became serious and said: "You don’t know how much your sister suffered for you. You can’t be naughty and make your mother angry in the future."
At Xiaobei words, everyone in the room laughed.
Xiaobei continued with a happy smile: "But don’t worry, I’ll protect you in the future. After all, I’m your little uncle!"
Little Chaihuo squatted beside Xin He’s bed, carefully asking: "How is Madam doing?"
Xin He tugged at the corner of her lips, making a faint sound: "Mm."
Xiaobei joyfully held the child and squatted down: "Sister, you said her nickname was Ah Guai, right? I was worried that she would be a boy, and the name would sound too feminine. Now it seems the name is just right! But Ah Guai can only be her nickname. What should we name her formally?"
Shulan laughed: "All right, all right, Madam has been tired all night. Young Master Xiaobei, please don’t disturb her. Let Madam rest."
Xiaobei then said: "All right, Sister, you rest well. We’ll go out first."
Speaking, he continued to hold Ah Guai without letting go, laughing: "Ah Guai, let me hold you out."
Xin He smiled helplessly, letting him go. She had no strength at the moment, and she couldn’t take care of the child if she stayed in the room.
Xiaoyu led the wet nurse and the little maids quickly followed Xiaobei out.
Song Xi also bowed to Xin He: "Princess, please rest."
Xin He struggled: "Is it true what you said?"
Song Xi smiled: "Does the princess think I would lie to you? I suppose His Highness has not returned yet because he has his own plans and calculations, so the princess doesn’t need to worry."
After hearing Song Xi say this, Xin He’s heart finally settled. She had initially suspected that Song Xi had intentionally told her the news to give her more strength during childbirth.
Xin He lifted her lips gratefully, speaking weakly: "Thank you."
"Well, I’ll take my leave." Song Xi bowed again and left the room.
After saying those few words, Xin He couldn’t hold on any longer and fell into a deep sleep. Shulan stayed by her side, wiping her body with hot water. Looking at her mistress’ delicate face that was rarely pale and tired, she couldn’t help but sigh: women are truly strong when they become mothers.
Meanwhile, Ah Guai had been nursed by the wet nurse and was now much quieter. Xiaobei and Little Chaihuo were leaning over the crib, watching her blow bubbles. From time to time, she would whimper comfortably.
A very rare feature was her pair of eyes, bright and beautiful like the night sky.
Even the midwife said, "I rarely see children born into a family as beautiful as this one. Those big eyes, most children can’t even open their eyes when they are just born. This little miss is bound to be a beauty in the future."
Xiaobei was very proud: "Of course, she’s my niece. She has to be pretty."
Little Chaihuo glanced at him and was too lazy to talk.
Song Xi had never seen such a small baby before. He was the youngest in the Song family, so this was his first time witnessing a child’s birth.
Song Xi reached out and poked the child’s face, which was soft and tender, making one unwilling to use any force for fear of poking it too hard.
Shulan laughed: "Would Young Master Song like to hold her?"
Song Xi pursed his lips and said, "May I?"
Shulan took the child and laughed, "But only once."
After all, Song Xi was only six years old, so he was young and probably didn’t have much strength. Holding her once for the experience was enough.
Song Xi held the soft baby in his arms, feeling her weight. Her round eyes stared at him blankly, as if she was taking everything in.
Song Xi couldn’t help but laugh: "Why does she keep staring at me?" He was embarrassed.
Shulan laughed as she took the child back: "Our young mistress isn’t shy at all. She’s happy with anyone holding her. Young Master Song may be good-looking, so she likes to stare at him."
Xiaobei was somewhat unconvinced: "Why doesn’t she look at me then?"
Shulan laughed out loud: "You’ll have to ask our little mistress about that!"
Just as her words fell, there was a sudden series of excited shouts from outside: "The master has returned!"
Shulan joyfully looked outside and saw Marquis Mu Houchu striding towards the house, dusty and haggard, but his deep eyes were full of anxiety at that moment.
"The master is back!?" Shulan exclaimed with joy.
Marquis Mu Houchu hurried in: "Where is Madam?"
"Madam, Madam, she’s asleep inside. Madam has given birth to a little miss. Look, my lord!" Shulan was so excited that she was incoherent, holding the child out to Marquis Mu Houchu.
Marquis Mu Houchu was suddenly struck by the sight of the small life before him, as if his heart had been touched.
