Chapter Thirty-Nine Seeking Help

Xichun and her team were closing up shop earlier today. She had also bought a lot of groceries, including chicken, duck, fish, and meat, as a way to reward everyone for their hard work on her birthday.

"Come on, although we don't have any wine, we can still quench our thirst with this drink I made myself." Xi Chun bought some fruit and juiced it, which could be considered a luxury in this ancient world.

"I haven't had such a sumptuous meal in a long time. Usually when I go to a banquet, the dishes have barely been served when everyone's chopsticks are already grabbing at them. With so many people, it's a miracle if anyone can even get a little bit of meat."

"That's right. I went to my parents' house for a banquet before. There was an old lady who was so quick and efficient. We were still eating when, I don't know where she got the lotus leaves, she dumped them all into the lotus leaves. None of us were full and we were hungry all night. We were too embarrassed to say anything to her, an elder."

They were all complaining about how other people would do things differently when they encountered good food.

"Mom, I wish I could eat food like this on my birthday." Taozi was still eating heartily, while Qiangzi was more reserved.

"You wish! We're only able to eat this meal because of your sister Xichun. If you want to eat well too, earn your own money and let me buy the groceries. I promise I'll make you a meal like this." Aunt Zhang was so angry at his words that she laughed. He didn't even know what kind of family he came from.

"No way, I still need to save money to get married. My brother is the same; he said he met a girl." As soon as Taozi said this, Qiangzi quickly stuffed a piece of braised pork into his mouth. This brother of his is really unreliable; he should have known better than to tell him.

"Qiangzi, do you really have a girl you like?" Aunt Zhang looked at him with some suspicion when she heard this.

"Mom, no, no, don't listen to Taozi's nonsense." He quickly denied it, after all, it was just that he liked the girl, and the girl probably didn't even know his name.

"Come on, let's eat quickly." The others also came to the rescue, temporarily smoothing things over.

"I'd like to toast Xichun. If it weren't for you, our family wouldn't be living such a good life. It's all thanks to you," Qiangzi said to Xichun after pouring his drink from the bowl.

"That's all because you guys are hardworking. I just gave you a chance. Come on, let's have a drink."

"Yes, Xichun, we are all grateful to you. If it weren't for you, how would we have had the opportunity to come to this county town to broaden our horizons and earn money? Our children are also doing much better now."

Aunt He and Aunt Xu also expressed their gratitude to Xichun. They said that without her, they would not have such a good life. They were very grateful. Their families had a really hard life in the village, even more so than other families. Their children had little to eat all year round and would often drool over other people's food. They could not be persuaded to come home.

Therefore, they all cherish this job, and as long as Xichun is willing to take them, they are willing to continue doing it.

Everyone enjoyed the meal immensely, and the next day they woke up refreshed and determined to work even harder.

That afternoon, Xichun and Aunt Zhang were preparing food for their guests when they suddenly saw someone rushing up to their stall.

"Xichun, go see your mother quickly! She had a difficult childbirth. I just took her to the clinic, and the clinic said... it might not be good." Only then did Xichun realize that the person rushing in front of her was Ma Dawei.

"What? My mother? My mother is getting worse?" Xi Chun didn't expect this to happen. She quickly put down the kitchen knife and asked Ma Dawei to take her to the clinic.

"Miss Chen, is there anything I can help you with? I know a very skilled doctor in my family. How about I go with you and have him take you there for another checkup?"

Fu Changfeng was also in the crowd. He heard the conversation between the two and, disregarding everything else, stepped forward to speak.

"Okay, thank you very much, let's go over first." Xi Chun stopped being polite. If he really had a way, it could save a life.

As Xichun ran, she recalled the time when her parents were still alive in the original owner's memories. Although she was often scolded by Old Lady Chen in a sarcastic way, Wang always secretly protected her daughter.

Later, her father passed away. Wang stayed by his side for three months before marrying into Ma Dawei's family. Old Mrs. Ma would constantly make veiled accusations against her, and Wang would always cry and say that things would get better later.

The last time I went home was during the Dragon Boat Festival. Xichun just delivered some things and rushed back without checking on Wang's health. Would things have been better if she had come for a check-up sooner?

Too many images flashed through Xichun's mind. When she arrived at the clinic, Old Ma was looking at Wang Shi, who was lying on a door panel, barely breathing. She kept staring at the doorway.

"Mother, what happened to you? Doctor, how is my mother? Is there any way to cure her? I have money. If you can cure my mother, I will give you money." Xichun asked the doctor next to her loudly.

"Alas, forgive my lack of skill; I am truly powerless to reverse the situation. If you know a more skilled doctor, please go see him quickly, otherwise, I fear both of you may..."

Xi Chun understood the doctor's unfinished words, and she looked at Fu Changfeng running behind her with a glimmer of hope in her eyes.

"I'll take you to find other doctors, let's go." Fu Changfeng understood her meaning and made a decisive decision, ordering someone to take them there.

The villagers came with Ma Dawei, so they followed Fu Changfeng directly to a clinic in the East District. The clinic looked much bigger than the previous one.

"Young Master Fu, what brings you here today?" The waiters all recognized him.

"Quickly, go and fetch Doctor Dou. Tell him there's a patient in critical condition who needs immediate treatment." Fu Changfeng finished speaking, panting heavily. Upon hearing this, the young waiter didn't delay any longer and ran to the backyard to find Doctor Dou.

“Let’s go to the backyard. Doctor Dou is a famous gynecologist. I’ve already sent a servant to fetch a midwife. With their help, your mother will definitely be safe.”

"Thank you very much, Young Master Fu. I will thank you again after today." Xi Chun bowed to him.

"No, no, that won't do."

Before long, Doctor Dou arrived. After examining Wang's condition, he immediately said that the situation was indeed critical and that he would give her acupuncture. He also instructed the young apprentice to prepare the medicine according to the prescription.

After the medicine was prepared, the midwife arrived and, after examining the situation, also said that the baby was in a breech position. However, with the cooperation of Doctor Dou, the two worked together in the back room of the clinic to finally stabilize Wang's condition.

"Have you prepared a swaddling cloth? We'll need it later. Also, who's going to boil water? The mother's condition is much better now, so don't worry, she'll be fine." The midwife came out and explained the situation. Old Mrs. Ma immediately said she had brought the swaddling cloth, and Xichun quickly went to help boil water, since she didn't know anything about these things.

Seeing that there was nothing more for him to do here, and that he had even left his classmate at the stall, Fu Changfeng said goodbye to Xichun and then took his leave.
