"It's nothing." Xia Lan and Old Du exchanged a glance and smiled knowingly.
"So mysterious!" Xu Fulin looked at the two of them, still not understanding what they were talking about.
Old Du gave Xia Lan a deep look. She actually knew. For a moment, he almost thought she was an enemy agent. But then he thought about it and realized she couldn't possibly be one.
Qin Yu had served as a reconnaissance soldier; there was no way he wouldn't be able to tell that Xia Lan was an enemy agent.
"In short, Qin Yu is now under your care." Xu Fulin looked at Xia Lan as if he had found a treasure.
Finally, someone can handle that brat.
"Brother Yu is such a good person, is there anything I need to manage?" Xia Lan asked, puzzled. Qin Yu always knew exactly what he wanted to do, so how could he need to be managed?
"Well, I can't say for sure. You'll know when you encounter it! We must not let him act impulsively." Xu Fulin didn't want to make Qin Yu sound too terrible.
Fearing that it might frighten Xia Lan, since only Xia Lan could stop Qin Yu, all that was needed was to remind her.
"I understand." Xia Lan nodded, keeping Xu Fulin's words in mind.
It was obvious that Qin Yu must have done something in the past to make Xu Fuli so afraid, but Xia Lan didn't intend to ask.
As soon as the aroma of cured meat began to waft from the kitchen, Xia Lan and the others, who were already starving, turned around impatiently.
"Dinner's ready." Qin Yu walked over with a bowl of cured pork rice and served each of them a bowl.
Xia Lan carried the cured pork rice, but deliberately walked to the door and blew the aroma of the cured pork rice out towards the door.
"The cured pork rice smells so good..."
The guards outside were already starving. The aroma of the sizzling cured meat rice made their stomachs rumble.
"We're standing guard at the door, while they're eating delicious food inside! It's so unfair!"
"I don't care, I'm hungry, I want to go home for dinner!"
"They'll be here soon, just hold on a little longer!"
Some wanted to leave, while others chose to stay. With the persistence of some, jealousy ultimately triumphed over hunger.
Xia Lan listened to the people outside the door discussing how to have dinner, and then picked up her bowl and blew on it again.
The voice outside the door, as it spoke, suddenly made a sound of swallowing.
"Playful." Old Du looked at Qin Yu, who was gazing at Xia Lan with doting eyes, and smiled.
"Sometimes she's still just a child." Qin Yu didn't know how his eyes sparkled when he said this.
This made even Old Du smile.
I marvel at the beauty of love.
"I'm so wronged." Xu Fulin rolled his eyes and silently ate his rice.
"What are you doing at my brother's doorstep? Get out of here!" Old Wu Tianmin's fierce voice rang out from outside the door, and Qin Yu stood up.
"Fifth brother."
The fifth brother outside the door heard Qin Yu's call and quickly responded.
"Big brother, how are you? Are you alright? I'll chase them away right now."
"Who did you come with?" Qin Yu asked.
“I came here with my fourth brother!” Tian Min replied from outside the door.
"Get out of here right now! Otherwise, don't blame me for being impolite," Tian Min threatened the people blocking Qin Yu's door.
"We won't give in no matter what. Our people are coming soon, and he won't escape," the Hu family man sneered, refusing to budge no matter what.
The fifth and fourth brothers exchanged a glance, and just as they were about to make their move, Qin Yu's words came through.
"Don't hurt them, just push them aside."
The two men snorted and, following Qin Yu's instructions, withdrew their fists and pushed the person away.
As they pushed each other, the men grew increasingly agitated, and it looked like they were about to start a fight.
Qin Yu opened the door and addressed the men who were about to make a move.
"You really want to fight? Come on, fight me! I'm not Qin Yu if I don't break your hand."
Qin Yu's words made the men instantly realize something, their faces turned pale, and they withdrew their hands, no longer daring to continue.
"It really is you, Aunt Hu." Xia Lan came out carrying a bowl of cured pork rice, looking at that familiar, sharp-tongued face.
It really was her.
“I understand envy and jealousy. It’s true that jealousy is hard to cure. But what do you mean by blocking my door?” Xia Lan said with amusement.
"It's not like there weren't literacy classes. If any of you had attended a literacy class and knew that the Cultural Revolution was over, you wouldn't have done such a stupid thing!"
"Old Du is no longer a stinking intellectual. Don't you know that the college entrance examination has been relaxed? You should all know, right? After all, most of the educated youth in the village who could go back have gone back."
Xia Lan looked at Aunt Hu and explained everything one by one.
The families listened to Xia Lan's words. They weren't fools, and they naturally understood that the stupid thing they had done today was incredibly stupid.
"You should have told you about your daughter Hu Li's best friend from her time as a sent-down youth, Fang Yiyi, whom she calls her 'best sister' all the time!"
Xia Lan said deliberately.
Hu Li, standing behind Aunt Hu, pursed her lips. Fang Yiyi didn't even glance at her when she left.
Her so-called good friends and sisters were nothing but wishful thinking on her part.
"Just because you say he's innocent doesn't mean he's innocent. He was a stinking intellectual before, and he is a stinking intellectual now. We have to take care of this." Aunt Hu gritted her teeth and glared at Xia Lan. She refused to believe it.
He's clearly a stinking intellectual; how could he possibly turn his life around?
“Exactly! You say he’s not a stinking intellectual, but what proof do you have? Just because you say he isn’t doesn’t mean he isn’t!” someone echoed.
"Alright, have you made enough of a scene?" Xu Fulin walked out with a cold face and angrily said to Aunt Hu and the others.
"We're all from the same village, how could you do something like this? Don't you have any shame? You have no shame at all, huh?"
"We did nothing wrong," Aunt Hu insisted, still refusing to give up.
Having finally found leverage over Qin Yu and Xia Lan, they were determined to get this matter settled.
"Alright, then so be it, let's have a fight!"
Xu Fulin glanced at Aunt Hu indifferently. Since she wanted to challenge his authority, he would use the simplest method.
Aunt Hu's face turned pale. Fighting Qin Yu was just asking for death.
"Village chief, you always side with him," Aunt Hu complained.
Xu Fulin sneered. He was the village chief, but he didn't even have that power. What kind of village chief was he?
"Since the village chief won't take it, then we will!"
Still unwilling to give up, someone tried to rush over and grab Old Du.
Qin Yu kicked the person who came at him directly.
They kicked the person hard, sending them flying.
"..." Everyone present couldn't help but look at Qin Yu.
He wasn't joking; he was serious.
"You people are really sick, refusing to listen to reason and having to drink the penalty cup."
Xia Lan leaned out from behind Qin Yu and mocked the man Qin Yu had kicked away.
The atmosphere instantly became tense. Qin Yu pushed Xia Lan towards the house, gesturing for her to go back inside, afraid that she would be caught in the crossfire.
Just as both sides were about to take action, the sound of a car came from the village entrance.
"A car is coming!"
