"I found a job as a ticket inspector," Qin Yu explained.
"Your comrade-in-arms found this for you?" Uncle San nodded in satisfaction. As long as his wife didn't actually support him, there wouldn't be any problem.
A man can't rely on his wife; he must also have his own things to do!
Qin Yu nodded, and his third and seventh uncles stopped asking questions. They both knew that Qin Yu had served in the army and had a life-or-death bond with his comrades.
Third Uncle and Seventh Uncle left with Second Uncle and the others, satisfied.
The news that Xia Lan had found a job as a sales clerk in the city caused quite a stir in the village.
"Really! That Stone really married a gold nugget! Ever since he married Xia Lan, one good thing after another has happened to him..."
"Tsk, it's just a job you buy with money. If I had six hundred dollars, I could buy one too."
"Is it so easy to buy a job? My cousin spent so much money, but in the end he couldn't even find a job sweeping the streets."
"Oh dear, Qin Yu really got a good deal. He just took away such a golden opportunity."
"I should have stopped it back then, what a pity..."
"This girl is smart; she found herself a job. Will Shi Tou dare to disobey her in the future?"
"..."
The village women would gather together in their spare time to talk about Xia Lan and Qin Yu.
Xia Lan was unaware that she had become famous in the village. After a delicious meal cooked by Qin Yu's superb cooking skills, Xia Lan, feeling too full, decided to take a stroll to digest her food.
As soon as Xia Lan appeared in front of people, she felt like a light bulb, instantly shining brightly.
Because all the aunties who looked at her had eyes that seemed to hold a hundred thousand volts of electricity, staring directly at her with electrifying force.
"Oh, Xia, you're out?" The aunt looked at Xia Lan with eager eyes and spoke with affection.
It's as if Xia Lan and she have a very good relationship, even though Xia Lan clearly doesn't even know who she is.
"Hello, aunties." Out of basic politeness, Xia Lan nodded to them and greeted them.
"Oh my, what a good child! So polite!"
"That's right, people who come back from the city are different!"
"Xia, I heard you found a job in the city?"
Immediately, one of the aunties couldn't help but ask for confirmation. Xia Lan glanced at them, and a thought flashed through her mind.
No wonder Qin Yu gave her a heads-up beforehand. She was thinking she might have to bring up the topic on her own, but she didn't expect they already knew.
But she only told Aunt Liu about it when she came back...
"Yes, that day the department store caught three sales clerks knitting during work hours and secretly taking things home, so they were fired on the spot," Xia Lan explained to her aunts.
This also indirectly confirms that it's true she works at a department store.
"You're lying! How could you possibly get a job like that at a department store! You can't buy that kind of job with money!" A questioning voice came from behind, and Xia Lan turned around to look.
Fang Yiyi and Hu Li walked over hand in hand and immediately launched into a tirade of mockery at Xia Lan.
"Who knows what you did while you were hiding in the city for days? You think you can just find me like that?"
Hu Li didn't believe a word of it. When she heard her mother say that Qin Yu had shaved his beard and regained his handsome face when he came back, she couldn't wait to come over.
They happened to run into Fang Yiyi on the way. Fang Yiyi told Hu Li about Xia Lan, and Hu Li rushed over with Fang Yiyi.
"Who are you?" Xia Lan asked, seeing Hu Li and Fang Yiyi, who was always smiling gently beside her.
He gave a disdainful smirk.
No matter how 'gentle' her smile was, it couldn't hide the scheming in her eyes.
"Comrade Xia Lan, we're just trying to be helpful and remind you not to exaggerate too much. Do you think you can just find a job like this at a department store? Don't think that just because we aunties are easy to talk to, you can just speak recklessly and make up stories..."
Fang Yiyi appeared genuinely concerned for Xia Lan, but in reality, she was implying that Xia Lan's words were all lies.
He only stayed in the county town for a few days in secret, and then slunk back to the village, deliberately lying that he had found a good job to avoid being talked about.
Who wouldn't want a sales clerk job?
So many people are fighting tooth and nail for that one job, and those are all college graduates who need education. Xia Lan never even went to school, so what kind of calculations could she possibly make?
Hearing Fang Yiyi's words, the aunties also felt that they made sense.
Everyone knows that Xia Lan has never been to school.
Can she even keep track of that debt?
Xia Lan looked at the smugness in Fang Yiyi's eyes, as if she had successfully exposed her lie and caught her in a compromising situation.
"I know you're envious, but you don't have to be like this, do you?"
"Why do you think I can't do math or that I'm illiterate?"
"Do you know me? Do I know myself? You know nothing, yet you speak as if you know everything?"
Xia Lan looked at Fang Yiyi and asked with amusement.
“How could you, a woman who has never even read a book, possibly know how to do accounts?” Fang Yiyi bit her lip, thinking that this was all Xia Lan’s sophistry.
"Can you read?" Xia Lan turned to look at Hu Li, who stared at Xia Lan without answering.
She doesn't know any words.
"Then you can read, right?" Xia Lan let Hu Li go and turned to look at Fang Yiyi.
“Of course, I was a sent-down youth,” Fang Yiyi said proudly, puffing out her chest.
"What is 740 divided by 63?" Xia Lan asked directly.
"This...this doesn't have paper or pen." Fang Yiyi paused, immediately feeling the pressure. She wanted to calculate, but without paper or pen, she panicked.
"Besides, stores wouldn't use such a large number!"
