"Luckily, Xia was smart enough to pull you down to your knees, otherwise your reputation in the village would be ruined." Xu Fulin said to Qin Yu as soon as he entered the house.
"I didn't expect it either." Qin Yu also didn't expect that his usually taciturn father would be the most ruthless.
Unable to accept the damage to her reputation, she seemingly admitted her mistake but actually put pressure on him, forcing him to agree.
If Xia Lan hadn't seen through his intentions and pulled him down to kneel with her, it would have been different.
After what happened today, he will be considered an ingrate and an unfilial son in the village.
"Xia, how did you figure that out?" Xu Fulin thought highly of Xia Lan. He had thought she was a girl who knew nothing, but he didn't expect her to be able to discover that Qin Tao was not as honest as he seemed.
“He looks like he’s apologizing, but it looks like we’re forcing him to apologize, putting us on the aggressive side,” Xia Lan said slowly.
“That’s right,” Xu Fulin agreed. “He used this tactic of feigning retreat to advance, which fooled everyone, and they all thought he was an honest man.”
"Those who are detrimental to him will eventually become the sinners." Xu Fulin glanced at Qin Yu, who remained calm; he had already suffered at his hands long ago.
"Alright, let's not talk about him anymore!" Xu Fulin waved his hand; he hadn't come to see them because of Qin Tao.
"Qin Yu said you want to help that stinking intellectual?" Xu Fulin looked at Xia Lan, who nodded.
“Even if they’re wrong, they haven’t committed any heinous crimes,” Xia Lan said, looking at Xu Fulin. “Could you offer him some help? It doesn’t have to be much, just something to improve his living conditions.”
"You're really not afraid of death! Do you know that if people find out, you'll be dragged out for public criticism too!" Xu Fulin looked at Qin Yu, who smiled.
“I told her everything.”
"What did you say?" Xu Fulin looked at Qin Yu in surprise, then at Xia Lan. "Are you talking about what I was thinking about?"
"Yes." Qin Yu nodded and took Xia Lan's hand.
"You're being foolish! If you tell her, you're finished!" Xu Fulin's expression changed drastically.
Xia Lan raised an eyebrow speechlessly, looking at Xu Fulin. "Uncle Xu, this is an insult to my character."
"You silly girl, is that what I meant?" Xu Fulin was so excited that he forgot Xia Lan was still there, and gave an awkward smile.
“You are,” Xia Lan said firmly. “But I’m not angry. I don’t think what you did was wrong.”
"Aren't you afraid?" Xu Fulin raised an eyebrow, now genuinely interested in hearing what she had to say.
"I'm not afraid," Xia Lan said confidently with a smile. "I support Brother Yu."
As someone who has been through it all, Xia Lan knows very well that after the college entrance examination at the end of this year, the reform and opening up will begin tomorrow. At that time, individual business owners will be able to do business independently, and buying and selling will no longer be labeled as speculation and profiteering.
Xu Fulin was truly stunned by Xia Lan's confident smile.
He had to admit that Xia Lan's words surprised him greatly.
You should know that these days, if you're caught engaging in speculation and profiteering, you're shot without even a chance to refute it.
“If you want to help him, that’s fine. Just find an excuse to throw him into a pigsty.” Xu Fulin glanced at Xia Lan. “The pigsty is warm, and although it smells a bit, at least it won’t be exposed to the wind and rain.”
"What about food?" Xia Lan knew this was already very good. Even though Xu Fulin was the village chief, he could no longer blatantly protect Old Du.
“There’s nothing we can do about feeding him. After all, our village doesn’t even have enough food for itself. If we give him some more, people will definitely be suspicious,” Xu Fulin said seriously.
"There's a sweet potato field behind the pigsty," Qin Yu suddenly said.
"What?" Xu Fulin and Xia Lan were taken aback.
"I cleared a plot of land behind the pigsty and planted sweet potatoes there." Qin Yu looked at Xu Fulin, who smiled slightly.
"You're something else! I was wondering why you liked going to the pigsty so much, turns out you've cleared out a plot of land there yourself."
"It's been a long time since I've been there. They should have grown quite a bit by now. You can find them just by digging."
Seeing the confusion in Xia Lan's eyes, Qin Yu took the initiative to explain.
“Before I joined the army, they complained that I was wasting food and I didn’t have enough to eat every day. Later, Uncle Xu secretly gave me a bag of sweet potatoes. I didn’t eat them, but planted them behind the pigsty.”
"I survive on sweet potatoes every day, but I don't dare to eat too much for fear of being discovered."
Qin Yu's words tugged at Xia Lan's heart, and she said with heartache, "You don't even feed you every day?"
Qin Yu gently patted Xia Lan's head.
"It's not easy for this kid to survive and join the army." Xu Fulin knew Qin Yu's situation best. Qin Yu did the most work, but he couldn't even get a hot meal.
If he hadn't been so heartbroken that he secretly helped him out, he would have starved to death long ago.
"Alright! I'll have him move to the pigsty tomorrow." Xu Fulin finished his business and prepared to go home.
But before leaving, he turned back to look at the two of them one last time. "You two have so much on your own, yet you still have the energy to meddle with others."
"Hehe." Xia Lan chuckled, and Qin Yu grinned sheepishly.
Xu Fulin rolled his eyes at the two of them.
"One is silly and the other is simple-minded, a perfect match."
Xu Fulin left, and Xia Lan hugged Qin Yu. "Is there still so much you haven't told me?"
"It's really nothing, all of this is in the past." Qin Yu picked up Xia Lan and pressed her against the door.
"If you truly care about me, then be my wife." Qin Yu looked at Xia Lan, his eyes dark.
"These are two different words." Xia Lan sensed Qin Yu's domineering attitude and gently pushed him away.
"Put me down."
"No!" Qin Yu's lips curled into a smile. "You just felt sorry for me."
