Chapter 1278 Choice in the Dark

Xu Yuehua woke up in a daze, her body aching like a tidal wave. She felt herself being carried on someone's shoulder, being jostled forward.

She tried to open her eyes, but everything was blurry, as if she were shrouded in thick darkness.

I still can't see it.

She closed her eyes helplessly, feeling somewhat uneasy. But no matter what happened next, she would try her best to find a way to escape.

After a long while, she felt herself being gently placed on a soft bed.

A voice came from beside her, it was the person who brought her back saying to another person: "Master, the person has been brought back."

Then, a man responded: "Very well, step down."

"yes!"

The voice gradually faded into the distance, but Xu Yuehuai's heart grew heavier and heavier.

She felt someone approach her, and a hand gently stroked her face.

Xu Yuehuai instantly became alert. She swiftly reached out and grabbed the other person's neck, demanding sharply, "Who exactly are you? What do you want to do to me?"

The other person didn't struggle, but simply said softly, "Sister, have you forgotten me?"

Xu Yuehuai's heart skipped a beat. She tried hard to recognize the voice and finally realized that it sounded like Bei Ye's voice.

She asked incredulously, "You're Bei Ye? Weren't you dead? Your voice..."

Bei Ye's voice was a little hoarse as he explained, "I had armor to protect me. I was blown up and buried in the ground for seven days and seven nights before being rescued. My throat was ruined by the smoke from the explosives."

A complex emotion flashed in Xu Yuehuai's eyes; she was both shocked and terrified. She asked, "Don't tell me it was the people from the Four Kingdoms who saved you."

Bei Ye chuckled, pinched Xu Yuehuai's chin, and said, "Sister is really smart. But you must also know that they are actually members of the transmigrator organization. I was wondering how you were so amazing, I didn't expect you to be one of them too."

Xu Yuehuai shook her head and denied it, saying, "I'm not with them either."

But Bei Ye didn't let her off the hook. He continued, "But they've been looking for you outside. If they catch you and take you back, what do you think your fate will be?"

Xu Yuehuai's heart tightened; she knew Bei Ye was telling the truth. She was silent for a moment, then asked, "What do you want?"

Bei Ye's voice softened as he said, "Sister, you can stay by my side and be my maid."

“But I’m blind now.” Xu Yuehuai frowned.

Bei Ye gently stroked the back of her hand and comforted her, "I have a way to help my sister recover."

Xu Yuehuai's heart skipped a beat. It seemed that Bei Ye must know how to cure the multiple poisons in her body!

However, if she wanted his help in interpreting the text, it would mean that she would have to stay by Bei Ye's side for a period of time.

But she still has many things to do, and if she stays trapped here, it will be dangerous for others.

It was a difficult choice, but she knew she had to make a decision quickly.

She thought for a moment and said, "I can agree to that, but I have one condition."

Bei Ye asked, "What are the conditions?"

Xu Yuehuai said, "I need you to promise that no matter what happens in the future, you will not hurt me."

Bei Ye smiled slightly and said, "I promise you."

And so, Xu Yuehuai became Bei Ye's maid. Her life underwent a dramatic change, but she knew it was a reality she had to face.

...

Moonlight streamed through the window and fell on Xu Yuehuai's pale face. She sat quietly by the bed, her once bright, star-like eyes gradually regaining their light under the meticulous treatment of the renowned doctors arranged by Bei Ye.

Her fingers gently brushed across her eyelids, feeling that long-lost warmth.

"Sister, can you see me now?" Bei Ye's voice rang out from outside the door, carrying a hint of barely perceptible tension. He pushed the door open and entered, his gaze fixed on Xu Yuehuai's face.

Xu Yuehuai slowly raised her head. Although her eyes were still a little blurry, she could already make out the outline of the person in front of her.

She nodded slightly, her voice as calm as a frozen lake: "Young master, please don't get so close. I am just your maid now."

Bei Ye frowned slightly. He took a few steps closer, wanting to hold Xu Yuehuai's hand, but she deftly avoided it.

He said somewhat helplessly, "Sister, why are you still so cold? What do I have to do to you before you'll be a little gentler?"

Xu Yuehuai looked at him coldly, a complex emotion flashing in her eyes: "Wasn't I good enough to you before? Why did you try so hard to kill the person I love?"

Although her voice wasn't loud, it struck Bei Ye's heart like a heavy hammer.

A hint of guilt flashed across Bei Ye's face as he explained, "I just want you to stay by my side forever." His voice was soft and gentle, as if he wanted to persuade Xu Yuehuai.

However, Xu Yuehuai remained unmoved. She said calmly, "But we are ultimately not on the same path. I can't stay with you forever, and I'm sure you know that too."

A struggle flashed across Bei Ye's face. He gritted his teeth, as if making a decision: "Then I'll have to resort to some means. Sister, please don't hate me. I know you'll still try to leave me. But please put aside your resentment towards me for a while and spend some time with me, okay?" His tone was pleading.

Xu Yuehuai gave a cold laugh, her heart filled with helplessness and sorrow. She knew Bei Ye's words were just empty talk, but at this moment she had no strength to refute them. She sat there quietly, like a statue frozen in ice.

Seeing that she didn't speak, Bei Ye took out a dress from the wardrobe next to him and handed it to her: "Sister, put this on. I'll take you out later." His tone was full of expectation.

Xu Yuehuai took the dress, but she already had a plan in mind.

She knew that if she could go out later, she might be able to pass on a message to the Ghost Doctor and the others.

So she nodded and said, "You can go out now."

Bei Ye smiled and nodded, then turned and walked out of the room.

Xu Yuehuai sighed softly, untied the belt around her waist, and began to change into her dress.

Her fingers deftly moved along the sash, quickly tidying her attire. She then simply styled her hair into a bun, making her look elegant and refined.

Xu Yuehuai opened the door, and Bei Ye was standing outside waiting for her. When he saw her come out, a hint of amazement flashed in his eyes: "Sister, you are still so beautiful." He reached out to put a cap on her, but Xu Yuehuai gently avoided it.

"I can do it myself," Xu Yuehuai said calmly, putting the cap on her head. Her movements were gentle, yet carried an unyielding determination.

Bei Ye's hand awkwardly froze in mid-air. He withdrew his hand, his eyes filled with inexplicable emotions.

He knew Xu Yuehuai's heart was no longer with him, but he still refused to let go. He turned and walked ahead, leading Xu Yuehuai out of the room.
