Fate
Yun Jin sighed. They were really destined to meet. She had only left the house once, yet she still managed to run into him.
It was early morning, and there were hardly any people on the streets. The alley was even more deserted and quiet. Deep in the alley, a dirty white van was parked with its trunk half open. Something inside was struggling and making faint noises.
Yun Jin gritted her teeth, deciding she couldn't just rush in; what if she couldn't get out? She cautiously entered the alley, and with the help of a pile of old cardboard boxes and trash cans, she instantly transformed back into a calico cat.
The dust rising in the air made Yun Jin sneeze. Yun Jin looked around and felt uneasy.
"It's alright, this way it's safer and less likely to be discovered," Yun Jin encouraged herself while straining her ears to listen carefully to any movement ahead.
"Oh, what bad luck. This dog is so thin and dirty, there's hardly any meat on it... it won't fetch much money."
A man was complaining loudly in a gruff voice, and a large bunch of keys rustled around his waist.
"Keep your voice down, stop talking nonsense! Did you get the medicine in?" Another person quickly lowered their voice and interrupted him, "It feels like if we just leave after we're done, it'll be troublesome if we attract the police or animal rights activists."
"That's about it. This bastard is pretty tough. Most people would faint after one shot." The man muttered to himself, bending down and groping for something, while another man stood guard nervously on the side.
Yun Jin looked down at the ground and saw Qi Qi lying there, his four legs twitching. His hair was filthy and messy, and he looked weak and powerless.
Yun Jin quietly climbed up a large tree and, using the leaves as cover, observed the situation from a branch.
Oh no, we've really run into dog traffickers. What can Yun Jin do? By the time she calls the police, they'll probably be gone.
A direct confrontation is definitely not an option; it would likely result in our own demise. We must rely on strategy.
Seeing that the man was about to put Qiqi into a sack and throw her into the trunk, Yun Jin's eyes lit up and she had an idea.
In the blink of an eye, Yun Jin leaped down from the sky and landed on the man's back, extending her sharp claws and grabbing him forcefully.
"Ouch—" The man cried out in pain, his hand instinctively loosening its grip, and Qiqi fell to the ground with a "thud." He angrily reached back to grab Yunjin on his back.
"Damn it, where did this stray cat come from? It's asking for trouble!"
The other man on lookout heard his companion's scream and immediately ran over: "Keep it down, what happened?"
While the two men were distracted, Yun Jin quickly jumped down and spotted the car keys on his waist with a quick glance.
Yun Jin took a bite and then ran at her fastest speed without hesitation, dashing towards the exit of the alley like a bolt of lightning.
"The keys! That damn cat stole the car keys! Damn it, chase after it!" The man finally realized what had happened, both shocked and furious.
Using her small frame, Yun Jin darted toward the exit, but the man was faster. After only a few steps, she was about to be grabbed by his large hand.
Yun Jin suddenly stopped, used her hind legs to push off the man's waist, and jumped onto the low roof of the building next to her in a few quick movements.
"Damn it!" The man, having missed his target, cursed loudly.
Standing on the rooftop, the view opened up, and it was just a few steps away from the residential area. The old residential area had low walls, and Yun Jin jumped down without hesitation after finding the right spot.
She ran frantically to the stairwell of the nearby apartment building, made sure no one was around, instantly changed back to her normal self, then tidied her hair and breathing before walking out.
Sure enough, the two men walked in aggressively, looking around as if searching for something. Yun Jin pretended to look at her phone and walked towards the entrance of the residential area.
"Hey little girl, have you seen a calico cat carrying a key in its mouth?"
"No, why would a cat be carrying keys?" Yun Jin said impatiently without turning her head. "Are you people from this community? If you keep causing trouble, I'll call security."
The man was taken aback, then threatened menacingly, "Who are you trying to scare? You have security guards here, so mind your own business."
Yun Jin ignored them and quickly walked towards the alley while calling the police.
When she finished explaining the situation, she arrived at the van. Qiqi had already struggled to stick her head out and was breathing weakly.
"Can you still transform into human form?" Yun Jin threw the sack aside.
"Yes." Qi Qi shook her head vigorously, her hands, which had returned to human form, trembling as she supported herself on the ground.
“I’ve called the police, they’ll be here soon,” Yun Jin said, helping him up. “But the dog traffickers might come back, it’s not safe here, we have to leave.”
As Yun Jin and her companions emerged from the alley and entered a busy street, the two men walked towards them, cursing and looking dejected.
So fast!
Yun Jin's heart tightened, but she calmly pulled Qi Qi back and walked over to a breakfast stall next to her, sitting down as if nothing had happened.
She shouted loudly to the owner, "Boss, a bowl of noodles with soybean paste and a serving of steamed buns."
The two men glanced at them and walked away, cursing as they went into the alley.
Not long after, the sound of police sirens could be heard in the distance. Soon after, the police arrived quickly and rushed into the alley.
A few shouts and the sound of clothes rustling came from inside. Quickly, the two dejected men were handcuffed and put into a police car. The onlookers slowly took their positions, surrounding the alleyway.
Yun Jin breathed a sigh of relief, looked at Qi Qi who was pale-faced, and pushed the steaming hot dumplings over to her: "Eat something to replenish your strength."
Qiqi shook her head, her eyelids so heavy they almost drooped, and said in a low voice, "I want to sleep now."
"All right."
Yun Jin figured the anesthesia hadn't worn off yet, so she got up to pack breakfast. Then she helped the somewhat limp Qi Qi up and slowly made her way to her rented room.
The journey, though not long, was arduous. Qiqi's steps were unsteady, and she nearly fell several times. Yunjin was also exhausted.
Finally back in her familiar rented room, Qiqi stumbled and fell face down on the bed, almost instantly falling into a deep sleep.
"Wait a moment--"
Before Yun Jin could finish speaking, she saw Qi Qi's mud-stained clothes smeared onto her clean sheets and blankets, and her sympathy and worry were immediately replaced by anger.
"Hey, you bastard, how can you repay kindness with enmity?" Yun Jin couldn't help but step forward and gave Qi Qi a couple of kicks in annoyance.
Of course, Qi Qi, who had already fainted, did not give Yun Jin any reaction.
After venting for a while, when Yun Jin saw him lying face down on the bed, she was afraid that he would suffocate, since he couldn't move due to the effects of the drug.
So Yun Jin could only sigh resignedly, grab his shoulders, and try to straighten his heavy body a little.
After doing all that, Yun Jin was so tired that she could barely breathe. In just one morning, she felt like she had done all the exercise she would ever need in her life.
Looking at Qiqi sleeping sprawled out on the bed, Yun Jin pulled a corner of the blanket over him.
"Never mind, I'll settle the score with you when you wake up."
The room fell silent for a moment. Yun Jin felt an awkward atmosphere surrounding her, even though she was in her own room.
She took out her phone and swiped it; the screen was full of messages from Shen Yi'an.
[Leaving home so early? When are you coming back?]
Are you still angry? Did yesterday's events upset you?
Do you need my help?
Yun Jin, why aren't you replying to my messages?
Then came a sad dog emoji.
Yun Jin took a deep breath. She wanted to accept it, but after typing a lot of words, she deleted them one by one. She was still too embarrassed to say it.
"It's alright, I'll tidy up the rented room when I get back. Yunchen will be back in a few days."
I'll be back tonight.
Yun Jin thought for a moment and then added a cute kitten emoji.
Shen Yi'an replied instantly.
【OK. 】
[I have a surprise for you.]
Yun Jin smiled and turned off the screen.
After waiting for a long time, Qiqi on the bed was fast asleep and even snoring, showing no signs of waking up. Yun Jin realized that waiting like this was not a solution, so she remembered the package Yun Chen had asked her to pick up and decided to go get it.
After walking out of the residential area, Yun Jin found a small shop that served as a courier station about ten minutes away. The shop was not big, with several rows of tall shelves crammed together, already filled with all kinds of courier boxes.
Based on Yun Chen's tracking code, Yun Jin searched back and forth several times before finally collecting all three packages.
She moved the three express boxes to the side; they were a bit heavy and had a lot of weight. Yun Jin curiously looked at the information labels pasted on the outside, which read: Semi-enclosed velvet cat bed, adult cat food large bag discount pack, and large cat scratching post.
Yun Jin looked at these words, her mind filled with question marks.
Why did Yun Chen buy all this?
Has she lost all humanity?
The difficult-to-care-for item was bought for myself.
Yun Jin carried the three large boxes and returned home, puzzled. She couldn't figure it out the whole way.
She climbed the stairs with her head down, deep in thought, and returned to her rented room.
However, just as she reached the door, a familiar tall figure appeared before her, fully armed in all black as before. He leaned against the wall, looking down at his phone, seemingly waiting for her.
Yun Jin was startled, and her hand instinctively loosened, causing the things in her hand to fall to the ground with a clatter.
How did Shen Yi'an get here?
Startled awake by the noise, Shen Yi'an looked up and saw Yun Jin. Her eyes, peeking out from behind her mask, immediately curved into crescents. She deliberately struck a cool pose: "Surprise! How about it? Didn't expect me to come back, did you?"
"No, you just came out like this? Won't there be paparazzi?" Yun Jin was so shocked that her jaw almost dropped, and she didn't even bother to pick up her things.
“Actually, I was on my way when you sent the message,” Shen Yi’an bent down and picked up the fallen package. “Let’s go inside.”
Yun Jin was truly embarrassed.
Qiqi is still sprawled out on the bed; how is she supposed to explain this to Shen Yi'an?
I'm doomed, is anyone coming to my rescue?
