Chapter 42 (First Release)
After removing the little black cat's claws from her clothes, Ning Wanwan stood up and prepared to leave the grove.
"Meow, meow!" The little black cat, its hopes dashed, watched the girl turn to leave and meowed anxiously, instinctively wanting to pounce and chase after her.
What if she changes her mind and wants to take it with her?
It will definitely be very, very well-behaved!
Ning Wanwan looked back as she stepped out of the grove, and sure enough, the little black cat was following her.
She thought for a moment, then squatted down and gently stroked its soft little ears with her fingertips to soothe it.
“Don’t follow me,” Ning Wanwan said. “I really can’t support you.”
"Meow, meow." The fluffy little black ball seemed not to understand her words, but still stubbornly followed her step by step.
Ning Wanwan hesitated for a moment, then picked up the little black cat.
Finding himself enveloped by the girl's warm body temperature and scent, the little black cat felt reassured and tried his best to please her, licking and rubbing against her fingers and palms.
"Are you going to take me away?" it wondered expectantly.
Ning Wanwan walked back to the grove and put the little black cat back on the big rock.
She gently pressed its head down to prevent the little black ball from jumping into her arms again.
"Stay here, someone will take you back." Ning Wanwan wasn't sure if it could understand, but the little black cat was very intelligent, so she whispered to it.
"You will have a very, very good future, and you will become the most amazing cat."
She let go of her hand, stood up, and walked out of the grove. The little black cat stubbornly tried to follow her with its four paws.
Ning Wanwan said helplessly, "Be good and stay here, okay?"
I don't know which keyword was triggered, but the little black cat that had been trying to chase after her actually stopped in its tracks.
The cat's bright blue eyes reflected the girl's figure, gazing intently at her.
Ning Wanwan didn't know why it had suddenly become obedient again; it probably understood what she had said before.
When she had walked some distance away from the grove, she could still see the little black cat sitting motionless, staring at her as she looked back.
Ning Wanwan withdrew her gaze, pursed her lips, sighed silently, and quickened her pace toward the classroom.
For some reason, the system remained silent throughout, until it finally spoke up: "Host...aren't you planning to keep this cat?"
It had prepared a whole basket of things, and it should tell the host how to dissuade them if they wavered in their desire to keep the cat.
This wasn't the system overthinking things; it was taking precautions. After all, it had learned about the destructive power cats could pose to humans during its recent studies of human knowledge.
Not to mention that this little black cat is so obedient, affectionate, and intelligent. Its pitiful and endearing appearance would probably be hard for most humans to resist.
However, the host was so determined not to adopt the cat that it had no one to say what it had prepared at the beginning.
The system couldn't help but wonder, was the host really unmoved by a kitten begging for adoption?
Ning Wanwan walked into the classroom without stopping and returned to her seat before the bell rang.
Hearing the system's question, she was puzzled: "Of course I won't keep it. System, you haven't forgotten that it's an important character in the plot just because it's a cat, have you?"
Ning Wanwan probably hesitated for a moment about whether or not to adopt the little black cat.
But in just a moment, she decided that she would not keep the kitten.
There's no other reason than that this little black cat is a key character in the plot and an important asset to the male lead's future. Ning Wanwan, who wants to maintain the plot, would never want to disrupt it.
Ning Wanwan was already quite annoyed because she hadn't been able to successfully complete the storyline involving the Jiang Group last time, and she had been thinking about how to make up for it later.
Naturally, it's impossible for them to intentionally disrupt the seemingly stable storyline of the little black cat being adopted by the female lead.
Moreover, Ning Wanwan has a clear understanding of her own abilities and personality.
“I’m naturally a very passive person, I just drift along, and I’m also very tight on money. I’m already struggling to support myself, let alone take care of a cat.”
Moreover, that's no ordinary cat. It will have a better future if it stays close to the male and female leads. As an ordinary person destined to remain, I can't offer it any resources in the future.
From any perspective, I shouldn't have kept that little black cat; it was irresponsible to both myself and the cat.
Ning Wanwan replied to the system in her mind while reaching for her textbooks on her desk, but instead pulled out a breakfast and a bottle of milk.
It was still warm.
Ning Wanwan opened her eyes slightly, looked at the unfamiliar breakfast with confusion for a while, and then looked at the seat next to her.
Could it be a gift from Zhao Rui? If it was from him, she would throw it in the trash immediately.
However, this "commoner" style of breakfast doesn't seem like something Zhao Rui would be interested in.
Zhao Ruiren wasn't in her seat, but Lin Ruowei's other female followers, who were sitting in the front row, excitedly told her the answer.
"It was Zhou Yanyao from the honors class who gave it to you! He came to our class to look for you during break, but you weren't there, so he asked someone else to put the breakfast on your desk."
Ever since Ning Wanwan shared Shenwu's snacks with Lin Ruowei's followers, their attitude towards her has become much friendlier.
"Ning Wanwan, do you know Zhou Yanyao? He's quite popular at our school!" another girl who was following her couldn't help but chime in.
I never expected that Ning Wanwan would not only have a good relationship with Shen Wu, but also with Zhou Yanyao.
It seems that even though Ning Wanwan and Lin Ruowei have a strained relationship, she's not someone you can bully easily!
Ning Wanwan looked at the breakfast in her hand, a little confused, and hesitated for a moment.
Then he nodded slightly: "We've had a few interactions... so you could say we know each other."
Lin Ruowei was still watching from the side. Last time, Zhou Yanyao was almost hit by Zhao Rui's car, but he still treated her very well. Lin Ruowei was also there at the time. Ning Wanwan couldn't bring herself to say that she didn't know him.
Upon hearing Ning Wanwan's admission, Lin Ruowei gave a disdainful snort but said nothing more.
Recently, many people have been protecting Ning Wanwan, and even Zhao Rui inexplicably warned her not to do anything to Ning Wanwan.
Lin Ruowei wasn't afraid of Zhao Rui, her former sycophant, but she was a little wary of Shen Wu's warning to her in front of everyone at the KTV last time.
Lin Ruowei denied that she was actually intimidated.
"Was it really just a few ordinary encounters?" The followers who were originally surrounding Lin Ruowei now all turned their attention to Ning Wanwan, who was usually invisible.
The followers winked mischievously at Ning Wanwan, clearly not believing that she and Zhou Yanyao had only met a few times.
After a few interactions, I was able to deliver breakfast to people.
Zhou Yanyao is known in A-class for his good interpersonal skills and strong affinity. He can get along with almost everyone, but in return, it is difficult for anyone to receive special treatment from him.
The followers became even more enthusiastic towards Ning Wanwan.
"Wanwan, do you have a crush on him? If not, could you introduce him to us?"
Who wouldn't like a handsome, cheerful, and sunny young man?
Ning Wanwan: "I can't decide that..."
The girls following along sighed regretfully, "Okay..."
Surrounded by so many people, Ning Wanwan felt a little suffocated, even though none of them meant her any harm: "I... I can only ask him for you..."
"Wanwan, you're so kind!" They immediately came back to life.
Seeing that their conversation was gradually shifting to how popular Zhou Yanyao was, how athletic he was, and how good his grades were, Ning Wanwan breathed a sigh of relief without making it obvious.
She looked at the breakfast, hesitant, wondering what to do with it.
She was indeed hungry, and she didn't know how Zhou Yanyao had guessed she hadn't eaten anything that morning. Could it be... that he saw her deliberately avoid breakfast shops?
It would be a bit awkward if the other party found out.
It seems wasteful to just throw it away.
If it were Zhao Rui, Ning Wanwan would have returned the breakfast to him without hesitation or simply thrown it away, but she really didn't dislike Zhou Yanyao to that extent.
Having no other choice, Ning Wanwan felt even hungrier with the warm breakfast placed in front of her.
Let's return the breakfast to him later.
Ning Wanwan made up her mind to stop agonizing over it and started eating her breakfast while thinking.
Oh, the feeling of my starving stomach being filled with food is just so blissful.
The only annoying thing was that when Zhao Rui came back and found out that Zhou Yanyao had delivered Ning Wanwan's breakfast, he almost exploded on the spot.
While gritting his teeth and saying he would teach Zhou Yanyao a lesson, he also muttered in Ning Wanwan's ear about Zhou Yanyao's ill intentions and how cheap the breakfast he sent was, saying that he would send her a luxury meal every day from now on.
Ning Wanwan couldn't understand why he was reacting so strongly, and she was too lazy to pay attention to him.
Anyway, ever since she made that promise to Zhao Rui, Zhao Rui has basically only been verbally annoying to her.
Moreover, for some reason, the Zhao family seems to have run into trouble recently. The company was hacked, and Zhao Rui is a bit overwhelmed and has no interest in staying at school, so he has been appearing much less frequently.
"I feel like I've had pretty good luck these past few days," Ning Wanwan chatted with the system. "Maybe I should even thank that hacker."
The system, having secretly done something wrong, remained nonchalant: 【Yeah, yeah.】

...
With the annoying guy gone, Ning Wanwan began her happy, laid-back life.
But soon, she couldn't keep giving up.
The cause was an unexpected event detected by the system.
[Host, something seems wrong... That black cat wasn't adopted by Shen Wu.]
Ning Wanwan: "What happened?"
She had a bad feeling. She hadn't gotten involved this time, so why was the plot going wrong again?
[The cause of this is still unclear... all we can find is that the female lead, Shen Wu, behaved differently from the character in the story; she didn't adopt the black cat this time, despite being supposed to.]
Everything else is progressing normally; there's no way to determine why the female lead's behavior changed.
Ning Wanwan: "...Could it be because the female lead won't decide to get the cat for a while, and it's too early now?"
[Unlikely, the current timeline has already passed the point in the story where the female lead adopts the black cat!]
The plot is currently stuck; the female lead hasn't adopted the black cat, so the black cat won't go to the male lead either, and the consequences will be severe.
Ning Wanwan: "..."
She covered her forehead, her face contorted in pain.
"Shouldn't we try to find a way to get the story back on track after it's gone astray?"
