Chapter 43 (First Release)
Seeing her host so conflicted and distressed, the system hesitated for a moment before finally revealing the cruel truth: "[That's probably it.]"
[You should take the initiative to find a way to bring the story back on track.]
Ning Wanwan continued to cover her forehead and sigh.
"Why? The plot was going so smoothly, how did it go wrong again?"
"That shouldn't be the case."
But no matter how much she complained at this point, the system had already stated it definitively, so she had no choice but to find a way to correct the distorted plot.
The black cat is still in the grove. Host, what do you plan to do?
Would you like to check on the black cat first?
"Is it injured? Or sick?" Ning Wanwan asked in surprise, immediately standing up.
After some testing, the system replied: "No, it's normal now. I just thought you would go and see for yourself first..."
Or we could just bring the black cat back first.
In the system simulation's prediction of human behavior, many humans would do that.
Hearing that the little black cat was alright, Ning Wanwan slowly sat down, puzzled: "If it's alright, why did you go to see it?"
Shouldn't the most urgent task be to find out why the female lead, Chen Wu, has changed?
Once the problem with Chenwu is resolved, the unexpected situation of the little black cat not being adopted will naturally be solved.
System: […Host, you are more rational than I thought.]
When it first bound itself to Ning Wanwan, based on its first impression, it always thought that its host was a timid, socially awkward, very weak and sentimental human being.
However, the first half of the statement is correct, but as for the second half... it can only be said that one is easily blinded by the host's displayed personality.
Ning Wanwan was not surprised to hear what the system said.
She simply never changed her goal.
When she first transmigrated to this world, her goal was to maintain the plot, survive until the end, and help this novel world achieve a perfect ending.
The system's initial goal was also this... but now it seems there's a slight divergence between us.
Ning Wanwan blinked, pondered for a moment, and then suddenly asked.
"System, don't you think your emotions are a bit too intense?"
If the system's initial playful and endearing demeanor was a formulaic facade primarily aimed at disarming others, then the emotionality it now reveals in various details—
It's becoming more and more like a "human".
The system pondered for a while after Ning Wanwan's question, but it couldn't understand the deeper meaning. It only felt that the host's expression seemed to have undergone a subtle change.
[Su, wouldn't it be better if the host were more like a human?]
It assumed that the host would prefer to be with its own kind.
However, Ning Wanwan did not like the existence of another "human" in her mind.
What's more, why is this system, which is supposed to be on a mission to save the world, so emotionally rich, even more so than her...?
Ning Wanwan lowered her eyes slightly, shook her head, and a slight smile returned to the corners of her mouth.
She didn't voice her other thoughts, but said softly, "It's okay, don't think about these things, let's focus on the important matter first."
The system also regretted bringing up topics that seemed to upset the host, and quickly asked, "So, host, what are your plans next?"
"What else can we do? Of course, we need to figure out why the female lead didn't adopt the little black cat and then solve the problem." Ning Wanwan sighed in annoyance.
"I haven't seen Shen Wu lately. I'll try to find an opportunity to ask her directly..."
After all, she had fed those stray cats before, so asking about related topics shouldn't be considered abrupt.
The only thing she needs to overcome is that she has to suppress her social anxiety and take the initiative to approach the female lead.
Ning Wanwan lay dejectedly on her desk, hiding behind a tall stack of books. She rolled around several times with her face pressed against the desk, trying to use the cool temperature of the desk to dispel some of the restlessness in her heart.
Waaah, I really don't want to interact with people, but I still have to take the initiative to find someone to talk to!
"Go for it! You can do it, host!" the system cheered her on.
...
Having decided to take action, Ning Wanwan began working on it, hoping to resolve the matter as soon as possible.
She happened to have the tablet that Shen Wu had given her before, so if she returned it now, she wouldn't have to contact him again next time!
Ning Wanwan held the tablet, thinking the idea was perfect.
However, things didn't go as planned, and Ning Wanwan didn't see Shen Wu for the next few days.
"It seems like Shen Wu has something going on with the Shen family. She hasn't been coming around much lately," said Shen Wu's classmate when Ning Wanwan took the opportunity to ask.
Unable to find him after one or two attempts, Ning Wanwan had no choice but to stake out near Shen Wu's classroom for an extended period.
Just when she was waiting in vain and even began to consider going directly to the Shen Group to find Shen Wu, she finally ran into the person she was looking for.
Shen Wu seemed to have come to the school to pick up something. She only stayed in the classroom for a few minutes, smiling and greeting the enthusiastic classmates before leaving with the materials.
Ning Wanwan quickly chased after him, but lost him when she rounded a corner.
"W-what's going on?" Ning Wanwan looked around blankly, but found no trace of anyone.
They can't just disappear into thin air, can they?
That's not right either; there are special powers in this world.
Ning Wanwan tried to calm herself down, but suddenly noticed that this corner was very secluded and seemed to have never been noticed before. In front of her was a wall that looked very high and thick.
She smelled a fruity aroma that was even more enticing and intense than in the classroom.
There were many trees around, but not a single fruit could be seen.
Ning Wanwan carefully recalled the plot and realized something: "Could this be the location of the exotic fruit...?"
How did she get here?
In the story, the male protagonist's school A has a strange fruit that can stimulate people's special abilities. Because of this, a school riot occurs, and the male protagonist gets into conflict with the Jiang Group in the process of trying to obtain the strange fruit.
The exotic fruit becomes a coveted treasure after the world undergoes a transformation, but it is of no use to Ning Wanwan, an outsider destined to have an ordinary physique.
Realizing she might have stumbled upon a key plot point, Ning Wanwan quickly took a few steps back, not wanting to get involved in these complicated and dangerous events.
However, she was suddenly pressed down by an irresistible force, and a sharp pain shot through her arm.
"Who are you! Speak!"
A bodyguard in a distinctive white uniform pinned her hands behind her back and interrogated her mercilessly.
Ouch! Ning Wanwan was caught off guard and almost burst into tears from the pain.
Out of the corner of her eye, she could vaguely see several figures in white uniforms rapidly approaching.
Ning Wanwan: This, this means I've been caught.
The appearance of these high-tech armed people in a high school must be related to the alien fruit.
But I didn't do anything! I really didn't come here for the exotic fruit!
Ning Wanwan struggled for a moment, trying to explain, "I'm just an ordinary student from this school. I accidentally wandered here... Could you please let go of me first..."
However, these people clearly did not believe her, and instead tightened their grip on her, shouting, "Be smart!"
Ning Wanwan was in so much pain that tears were about to fall, but what was even harder to bear than the pain was the panic; she felt the threat of death.
Am I going to be silenced? Given the rarity of the exotic fruit in the story and the bloodshed that ensues during each struggle for it—
It would be perfectly normal for them to be silenced!
[Host! I'm currently hacking into the school's management system. An alarm will sound shortly. Take the opportunity to run!]
The system spoke urgently in Ning Wanwan's mind.
Ning Wanwan snapped out of her daze. This was a good idea. The only problem was that this way, she would definitely be targeted by these forces that knew about the exotic fruit. Those who could set up their plans here before the world's great upheaval were definitely not people she could afford to offend.
But there's no time to worry about that now—
"What are you doing?" a gentle and pleasant voice rang out.
Upon hearing that familiar voice, Ning Wanwan suddenly looked up.
"Miss Shen, we caught a little mouse that was following you," said the man in the white uniform who was holding Ning Wanwan.
"Little Mouse" Shen Wu looked at Ning Wanwan, a hint of surprise flashing in his originally nonchalant eyes.
Ning Wanwan pursed her lips and lowered her head. In this situation, even though she hadn't done anything wrong, she couldn't help but feel a little guilty.
Will Shen Wu save her?
"Let her go," Shen Wu said, her tone calm and firm. "She came with me, but accidentally fell behind and couldn't keep up."
The man in the white uniform hesitated: "But this..."
Shen Wu said firmly, "Let her go. I will talk to President Jiang and Dr. Mu about this. You don't need to take responsibility."
"Yes, Miss Shen." The woman in the white uniform backed down and released Ning Wanwan.
Ning Wanwan moved her arm slightly, and the excruciating pain from the violently treated limb surged up.
Ning Wanwan swore she really didn't mean to cry.
But the mist in her eyes grew thicker, making it hard to see ahead. She couldn't help but blink, and a single tear fell onto her clothes with a "plop".
Ning Wanwan: "..."
The people in white uniforms had disappeared in a short while. Shen Wu took a few steps toward her and reached out to pull her up.
"Thank you, thank you." Ning Wanwan rubbed her eyes haphazardly.
Shen Wu sighed softly, "Be careful."
She took out a clean white tissue and handed it to Ning Wanwan. Ning Wanwan subconsciously raised her hand to take it, but then gasped in pain from her arm.
Chen Wu: "Let me help you wipe it."
She leaned closer and gently and carefully wiped away her tears, then lifted her sleeve to check on her.
"There's nothing seriously wrong, but remember to apply some ointment to help with bruising when you get back, otherwise it will get worse tomorrow," Shen Wu instructed.
The female lead's gentle and beautiful face was so close that Ning Wanwan turned her head away uncomfortably, but because she was also a girl, she did not show any strong aversion.
After examining the girl's arm, Shen Wu carefully pulled down her sleeve and straightened it. Then, as if on cue, she tidied up her school uniform, which had become somewhat disheveled from her movements.
Then Shen Wu stepped back a few paces, looking with satisfaction at the girl who had been tidied up and was no longer as disheveled as before.
Having finally created some distance, Ning Wanwan, who felt inexplicably uneasy, had just breathed a sigh of relief when she heard Shen Wu ask.
"Wanwan, you don't seem surprised at all by what just happened?"
