Chapter 44 (First Release)
Ning Wanwan's heart skipped a beat when she met Shen Wu's seemingly meaningful gaze.
Shen Wu continued to look at her, her tone casual as if she were just saying something offhand: "Most people would have many reactions to this, right? Curiosity, panic, anger..."
"So, Wanwan, you really don't have anything you want to ask?"
Ning Wanwan: "..." Oh no, I seem to have acted too abnormally.
Is the female lead really that observant...?
Ning Wanwan quickly looked away, a slightly bewildered look in her eyes: "About what happened just now... I'm sorry, I don't quite understand... Those people in white were strange..."
She paused, then asked softly, "Chen Wu, do you know them?"
Shen Wu had been watching Ning Wanwan's expression. When she heard the girl's somewhat flustered question, she smiled faintly and said, "Of course I know her."
As an ordinary person who "knew nothing," Ning Wanwan continued to ask in a low voice, "Who are those people?"
Ning Wanwan naturally remembered that Shen Wu had previously referred to those people in white uniforms as "President Jiang" and "Dr. Mu".
Judging from the plot, the person addressed as "President Jiang" should be Jiang Yuyuan, the major villain who will destroy the entire city in the future.
As for Dr. Mu, he doesn't seem to be mentioned in the general plot that Ning Wanwan got.
None of this matters. In short, Ning Wanwan believes that these characters with important roles have nothing to do with her cannon fodder status or the plot.
She had the script in her hands, but as an ordinary person, she shouldn't know this information. Ning Wanwan could only use this confused yet curious expression to appease Shen Wu.
Shen Wu probably won't answer anything more, right? After all, these are things that an ordinary high school student like her shouldn't know.
Sure enough, when Ning Wanwan raised her question, Chen Wu's tone was so calm that there was no emotional fluctuation, and the smile on his face also disappeared: "Those things are not things you should know."
Ning Wanwan pursed her lips and gave a soft "oh," secretly relieved.
She shouldn't know. Should I take her out and warn her not to investigate further?
Thinking of this, Ning Wanwan's tense body relaxed slightly.
Unexpectedly, Shen Wu didn't follow the usual pattern and suddenly changed the subject: "But, is Wanwan really curious?"
Ning Wanwan blinked, looking confused and uneasy. After hesitating for a moment, she followed up on Chen Wu's words, "Of course I'm curious..."
Shen Wu chuckled, rested her fingers on her chin, and looked thoughtful.
"If Wanwan really wants to know, just ask me, and I might tell you."
Ning Wanwan was stunned for a moment. After she understood the meaning behind Shen Wu's words, her heart was pounding so hard it felt like it was going to jump out of her throat!
I don't want to hear about these troublesome secrets!
I'm just a nobody! Why do you have to drag me into this mess?!
Ning Wanwan was so anxious that she didn't care about anything else. She immediately looked up at Chen Wu and shook her head like a rattle drum, hoping that the other party could understand her determination not to hear any secrets!
"Chen, Shen Wu, I didn't really want to know, you don't need to tell me..."
She knew her acting skills were mediocre, and could only hope that Shen Wu wouldn't investigate too deeply and that she could get through this unexpected situation.
The girl's eyelashes fluttered nervously, her eyes, which had just been filled with tears, were slightly red, and a thin layer of mist gradually gathered in her clear and beautiful eyes due to panic...
Shen Wu took in every subtle change in the girl's reaction, and after she had seen enough, she finally smiled and comforted her.
"It's alright. Since Wanwan is scared, I won't say anything more."
As she spoke, Shen Wu sighed slightly, somewhat helplessly.
"Wanwan, you really aren't suited to get involved in these complicated matters."
"It might be safer to know nothing at all, like we do now."
Ning Wanwan kept her mouth tightly shut. She would never say that because she had the plot, she basically knew everything, including why the Jiang and Shen families were making such a big fuss in a small school.
Thinking about it this way, I suddenly realized that it was really dangerous for an ordinary person like me to know so many secrets!
"Alright, let's not talk about this anymore."
"I'll take you away now. Don't tell anyone about what happened today."
Shen Wu made her decision, walked forward, and gestured for Ning Wanwan to follow her closely.
Ning Wanwan immediately followed closely behind, not daring to look around too much, for fear of seeing something she shouldn't, like a little tail following the female lead.
She was afraid that if she lost track of them, those people in white uniforms would jump out and violently attack her a second time.
With Shen Wu leading the way, Ning Wanwan successfully left this dangerous place.
Looking back cautiously, I found this secluded spot to be nothing special.
Who would have thought that there would be such a heavily guarded place, practically a high-tech experimental base, in a high school?
"Go back now. If you're tired, you can ask for leave. Be careful." Shen Wu casually folded the documents in her hand, said this to her in a gentle tone, and then lifted her feet as if to leave.
[Host! Our target this time!]
Ning Wanwan remembered without the system saying anything.
We can't let Chenwu leave like this! Otherwise, this trip will have been for nothing!
Seeing that Shen Wu was about to leave, Ning Wanwan panicked and quickly called out to stop her: "Shen Wu!"
Chen Wu stopped and looked back at her, seemingly surprised.
Being looked at like that made Ning Wanwan even more uneasy. Had she said something wrong?
The surprise in Shen Wu's eyes faded, and a genuine smile slowly appeared: "Is this the first time Wanwan has called me by my name so directly?"
Ning Wanwan: "...Huh? Ah..."
She didn't expect the female lead to notice such a small thing.
Seeing the girl's helpless expression, Shen Wu smiled and turned back to Ning Wanwan's side.
She asked gently, "Is there anything you want to tell me?"
Ning Wanwan tried hard to find something to say in her mind: "I...I won't tell anyone what happened today."
"Yes, I believe you." Shen Wu's smile deepened. "Is there anything else you want to say?"
The female lead's reassuring gesture was obvious and effective. Ning Wanwan's confusion and embarrassment gradually subsided, and she was able to sort out some of her thoughts.
"I have some questions for you..." Ning Wanwan lowered her head slightly and murmured.
Shen Wu: "Yes, you go ahead."
"I... I wanted to ask about the stray cats. You remember those stray cats in the grove, right? I noticed they were all gone. I heard you gave them away... But I found one little black cat still there, it hadn't been taken away..."
Ning Wanwan rarely spoke so much to anyone in one go. She stumbled a bit in the middle, and her voice grew softer and softer as she racked her brains to find the right words so as not to offend Shen Wu.
Shen Wu listened patiently to every word Ning Wanwan said, a faint smile playing on his lips.
"So, what does Wanwan want to know?" she asked.
Ning Wanwan pursed her lips: "So... I wanted to ask, what's the plan for the remaining little black cat?"
Shen Wu nodded: "I see, I think I understand now."
She first admitted to what Ning Wanwan had heard: "The stray cats in the grove were indeed sent there by me."
“After all, this is just a school, and high school students have limited energy. It’s not necessarily a good thing to just let these stray cats stay there. So I contacted relevant professional platforms to help the stray cats find homes that are willing to adopt them.”
"Don't worry, with the Shen Group overseeing it, the adoption procedures are reliable and there won't be any problems."
Chen Wu spoke in a clear and orderly manner, and Ning Wanwan felt much more at ease after learning the exact whereabouts of the stray cats.
"But what about that little black cat...?" Why not give it away or adopt it?
"As for the little black cat, it already has a chosen owner," Shen Wu answered calmly, knowing Ning Wanwan's question.
Ning Wanwan was taken aback: "...What?"
“That little black cat already has a chosen owner, one that will never change,” Shen Wu explained again, then asked with a smile, “In that case, why should I force it to change its mind?”
"Since it yearns for that one and only master, and only wants to wait there and refuses to go with anyone else, I will naturally not force it."
Ning Wanwan didn't quite understand what Chen Wu meant: "But... it's just a cat..."
Her deep, brooding tone made it seem as if she were treating the other person as an "ordinary person" like herself.
“That cat wasn’t just any ordinary cat; it was a clever ‘wild beast’.”
At this point, Shen Wu sighed softly, a slight smile on her face, and murmured a sigh of emotion—
"Wild animals are very stubborn. Even a kitten is still stubborn by nature."
Hearing these words, which sounded like a sigh but also a warning, Ning Wanwan felt inexplicably uneasy.
"Is Wanwan planning to keep it?" Shen Wu asked, seemingly out of curiosity.
Ning Wanwan shook her head without hesitation: "No."
"Oh, so determined?"
Ning Wanwan hummed in agreement, but didn't say anything more about it. Instead, she thought for a while before raising her head and looking directly at Chen Wu.
She mustered her courage and slowly asked, "Chenwu, can I ask you for a favor?"
"What is it?" Shen Wu listened to her patiently as always.
Ning Wanwan knew that such a request was abrupt, but it was important, so she suppressed the irritation on her face and asked.
"Could you adopt that little black cat?"
Shen Wu narrowed her eyes slightly.
"Is it not possible..." Ning Wanwan asked cautiously, "If there are any difficulties, I will try my best to help solve them, as long as you are willing to adopt..."
“I don’t plan to get a cat anytime soon,” Shen Wu gently interrupted her.
Ning Wanwan met the female lead's deep eyes helplessly, and for some reason felt that this look was very familiar, as if she had seen it on other people several times recently.
Who is it...?
Ning Wanwan was lost in thought when she heard Shen Wu continue speaking.
"However, if it's Wanwan who made the request, I'll consider it."
Ning Wanwan snapped out of her daze and couldn't help but ask in surprise, "Is it true?!"
Shen Wu smiled: "Of course it's true."
"But Wanwan, everything comes at a price."
"You hope I can grant your request, so what are your plans—"
"What will you give me in exchange?"
...
Ning Wanwan did not answer Shen Wu, but instead fled in panic.
She didn't know why, but she felt a wave of fear.
When she returned to the classroom, before she could calm down, Lin Ruowei was looking for her.
“Ning Wanwan,” Lin Ruowei said in a gentle tone, “go and deliver a love letter for me.”
