Chapter 45. Belated realization brings fear.

Chapter 45. Belated realization brings fear.

Ning Wanwan temporarily pulled her attention back, putting aside the heavy matter, and gently exhaled.

But she was also full of doubts when faced with Lin Ruowei's words.

"...You mean, a love letter?" Ning Wanwan asked uncertainly.

Lin Ruowei: "Yes."

Lin Ruowei's attitude was also different from usual. She, who was always arrogant, was unusually polite at this moment. Her tone was much softer, and she even forced a smile when she noticed Ning Wanwan looking over.

However, she is not usually like this, so her sudden change in demeanor makes her look strange, and even her forced smile appears forced and unnatural.

Ning Wanwan couldn't help but become wary, but on the surface she didn't change anything, and slowly said, "I'm afraid that won't work."

She didn't even want to ask who wrote the love letter or who it was meant for.

Something's definitely not right; it's certainly not a good thing.

Lin Ruowei raised her eyebrows slightly, her voice rising as she said with dissatisfaction, "You won't even help me with such a small thing?"

Ning Wanwan: "...I have a lot of things to do lately, so I can't help you."

Her voice was soft and low, but her refusal was very firm.

"...Ha! You ingrate, I introduced you to this circle so many times before."

Lin Ruowei was surprised that the timid and materialistic Ning Wanwan dared to reject her so decisively. She instantly reverted to her previous domineering attitude and cursed unhappily.

Even though Ning Wanwan had changed her personality a bit and wasn't trying as hard to climb into their upper circle as before, she still wouldn't refuse to do anything they asked her to.

It's just that incident at the KTV last time. I got angry in a moment and dragged her into it to smear Chen Wu without telling her beforehand. In the end, nothing serious happened, so why are you being so petty?

It's just that Ning Wanwan inexplicably gained a lot of favor, with people like Shen Wu and Zhao Rui protecting her; otherwise, I would have taught her a lesson long ago.

Thinking of this, Lin Ruowei tried her best to suppress her dissatisfaction.

Then, seeing that Ning Wanwan still hadn't changed her mind and agreed, she got even angrier, turned around and left.

Ning Wanwan noticed that Lin Ruowei went to find the other female followers and seemed to be talking about something. The other female followers looked on with a mixture of confusion and excitement.

Ning Wanwan didn't know what Lin Ruowei had said to the others, but as long as she wasn't looking for Lin Ruowei anymore, that was fine.

However, it was a bit unexpected that Lin Ruowei would give up on her so quickly and go to find someone else. Ning Wanwan originally thought that she would have to drag things out for a while longer.

[Host, aren't you curious? Lin Ruowei suddenly wants to send a love letter to someone? It doesn't seem like this happened in the story.]

"It's alright," Ning Wanwan replied after thinking for a moment.

Honestly, it would be a lie to say I'm not curious at all. Lin Ruowei was so obsessed with Jiang Yuyuan before, but now I wonder who she's set her sights on.

But as I said before, Ning Wanwan was too lazy to cause trouble and just wanted to stay away from Lin Ruowei, that treacherous and vicious female supporting character.

It would be best if Lin Ruowei and Zhao Rui packed up and quickly forgot about her, so they wouldn't come looking for this little cannon fodder again.

She hasn't recovered from what happened with Chen Wu yet.

Previously, when faced with Shen Wu's gentle questioning, even though the female lead's tone was very nice and her expression was very gentle, Ning Wanwan didn't know why, but she still felt her heart pounding and felt very uneasy, and couldn't help but flee.

"System, is there any other detailed information about the female lead, Shen Wu, in the story?"

What does the host want to know?

"For example... more character development of her personality, and her identity, etc."

[Let me check...it seems not. Her identity has always been the eldest daughter of the Shen family and the head of the Shenwu Group.]

[The plot barely describes her inner thoughts; she is always portrayed as gentle, dignified, and poised, handling everything flawlessly and helping the male lead a great deal.]

These were all the same as what Ning Wanwan already knew.

She sighed softly and rubbed her throbbing head: "Okay."

"I guess I'm... overthinking it."

When Ning Wanwan took a detour home after school, she spotted the hot-tempered boy with red hair again.

For some reason, the villain's younger brother has been standing at the school gate every now and then, glaring at every student who comes out with a fierce look, and it's unclear who he's waiting for.

Ning Wanwan carefully and deliberately avoided Jiang Chengran, who was blocking the school gate, and almost bumped into Zhou Yanyao, who was running on the road.

[Host, turn left!]

Fortunately, she reacted quickly and dodged it.

Socially anxious people really don't want to run into any unfamiliar people who might be looking for them.

But lately, it seems like there are more and more people trying to avoid this place.

Ning Wanwan touched the mask that was tightly covering her face, still feeling uneasy, and thought about buying a pair of glasses later.

...

Ning Wanwan woke up with a start and opened her eyes.

It's raining outside, and the raindrops are pattering against the windowpane.

[Host, you're awake]

Ning Wanwan gave a sleepy "hmm".

"It's raining and it feels a bit cold." She wrapped herself tighter in the blanket and picked up her phone from the bedside table to check the time.

It was exactly midnight.

I woke up after only a short nap, and I felt like I had something on my mind.

Ning Wanwan pulled the soft blanket tighter around her, somewhat puzzled.

"The temperature has dropped a bit too quickly lately." It was quite hot just a while ago.

[This is normal. The current large fluctuations in temperature are one of the signs of global anomalies and energy imbalances, and this will continue for some time.]

But this is just a minor issue.

Compared to the special abilities and dangerous, ferocious alien races that will appear later, a small change in temperature is indeed a minor issue.

Ning Wanwan blinked, the sleepiness in her eyes gradually fading.

She sat up and suddenly asked, "System, that little black cat..."

【Um】

Ning Wanwan hesitated for a moment before continuing, "That little black cat looks very small and frail, just like an ordinary kitten. Can it withstand the cold weather now?"

The system paused, surprised that its host remembered this: [Perhaps... the black cat is still in a very weak early stage, and with such heavy rain tonight, the grove is low-lying and may already be flooded.]

However, it's not an ordinary cat, so maybe there's nothing wrong with it.

The system's words were uncertain. Ning Wanwan hesitated for a moment, then suddenly threw off the covers, got out of bed, and put on her coat.

[What's wrong, host? That black cat has human intelligence. If the grove was really cold and wet, it wouldn't have stayed there indefinitely.]

"I think I should go out and take a look..." Ning Wanwan thought about it again and again, still feeling uneasy.

For some reason, she still felt somewhat uneasy.

The words Shen Wu had spoken during the day kept replaying in his mind.

[Wild beasts are all very stubborn.]

Ning Wanwan thought of how every time she left the grove, the little black cat would sit obediently and wait for her as she turned around.

"Let's go take a look, otherwise I might not be able to sleep tonight." Ning Wanwan rubbed her eyes, yawned softly, and decided to make a trip.

After quickly putting on her clothes, she put on a pair of waterproof shoes, grabbed her umbrella, and hurriedly left home.

Just before leaving the house, she saw the face mask on the doorstep, hesitated for a moment, and then picked it up.

The rain was really heavy tonight, but thankfully the city's drainage system was still working well, so there wasn't much water on the roads and it was still walkable. Ning Wanwan tried to jog as fast as she could.

Before long, she arrived at the school gate. But how to get in was another problem.

Ning Wanwan looked around for a while. Climbing over the wall was unlikely given her physical strength. The light in the guardhouse was on. Just as she was thinking of a reason, the guard noticed her standing outside.

"You're a student at our school, right? You also need to go in?"

"Yes." Ning Wanwan was glad she had put on her school uniform when she left home. She nodded quickly, then asked, somewhat puzzled, "Did other people go in too?"

"Yeah, it seems the school needs to replenish some important experimental equipment. A few people just came by." The security guard yawned, clearly also woken up late at night. "Are you coming in or not?"

In the dead of night, when it came time to replenish experimental equipment, Ning Wanwan almost instantly thought of that strange, heavily guarded place that resembled a base.

And those people in white uniforms.

Ning Wanwan didn't expect it to be such a coincidence that those people were entering and leaving the school that night, but this also gave her the opportunity to enter the school.

"May I go in and get something?"

"That's fine, but you need to register here first. How long will it take to get out?"

"Within twenty minutes... thank you."

After quickly writing her name and class, Ning Wanwan held up her umbrella, lowered her head, and hurriedly stepped through the small school gate next to the guardhouse.

The security guard was much easier to talk to than she had expected, and she got in much smoother than she thought. Ning Wanwan was somewhat surprised by her luck tonight.

There were some lights on in the school, but not many. The road was dark and very quiet. All Ning Wanwan could hear was the sound of rain and footsteps.

She belatedly realized she was a little scared, but she still hurried towards the grove.

However, Ning Wanwan slipped and almost fell because she stepped on something slippery in the thin film of water on the road.

"Hiss, wait, wait a minute, what is this?"

Fortunately, there was a public bench nearby, and Ning Wanwan quickly grabbed it, taking a deep breath in relief.

Using her half-squatting position, she turned on her phone screen to look at the thing on the ground that had almost caused her to fall.

On the ground, there was a thin, silvery substance that shimmered brightly when illuminated by the faint light of a mobile phone.

“This is… I feel like I’ve seen it somewhere before.” Ning Wanwan felt a little familiar with it. She reached out and picked it up, ignoring the mud and rainwater on it, and examined it carefully.

Then, in an instant, her face lost all color and turned pale.

Snake scales!

These are snake scales!

Ning Wanwan had almost forgotten about the silver scale she had found in the classroom before, but now that she had picked it up, the fear of realizing that there were mutated snakes in the school instantly surged up again!

That snake...could it be somewhere nearby?

Upon having this thought, Ning Wanwan's face turned even paler with fright, and she subconsciously dropped the snake scales in her hand.

But right there, from the low bushes along the path meant for viewing, came a rustling sound that grew closer and closer.

It looked like some kind of creature was gradually approaching.

Ning Wanwan held her breath and tried to open her eyes wide to look, but all she could see was the dense, impenetrable darkness of the night behind the bushes.

No, no! We have to get out of here right now!

Realizing danger was approaching, Ning Wanwan tried to stand up, but her legs were weak and she fell down again after only standing halfway up.

As the hard ground covered in sewage and grass clippings drew closer, Ning Wanwan instinctively closed her eyes.

Then she was supported by a pair of unfamiliar hands.

"Are you alright?" The other person's voice was elegant and pleasant, as melodious as a cello yet full of magnetism.

Ning Wanwan opened her eyes and met the man's smiling, amorous eyes, like peach petals.

Ning Wanwan flinched and instinctively replied, "No, it's nothing."

As she steadied herself, Ning Wanwan noticed the man's appearance and attire, and couldn't help but glance at him.

He was very good-looking, with deep-set features and a pair of beautiful eyes that seemed to hold water, with a faint smile in his eyes, and a lazy and casual demeanor.

What seemed out of place was that he was wearing a crisp, clean white doctor's coat.
