When Chen Shuning opened his eyes again, it was already dusk, and the train was filled with the smells of various foods.
A feeling of tightness in her lower abdomen made Chen Shuning realize that she hadn't been to the bathroom all day. So she asked Wang Chunni to watch her luggage for her, and then hurriedly got up and ran to the bathroom in the connecting area between the carriages.
Even though she was mentally prepared that the toilet in the car wouldn't smell good, Chen Shuning was still almost driven away by the smell the moment she opened the door.
Chen Shuning hurriedly snapped out of her daze, locked the door, and entered the space. During this time, she held her breath until she saw the familiar scenery of the small courtyard in front of her before she dared to breathe again.
It took a large glass of spiritual spring water to suppress the nausea. After relieving himself in the space bathroom, Chen Shuning wasn't in a hurry to leave.
Instead, she took a box of fruit salad that she had been craving from the refrigerator, ate it happily, and then leisurely left the space. Actually, she wanted to eat ice cream more, but it was already dark, and the night wind was still a bit chilly. She was afraid of catching a cold if she didn't close the window, so she didn't dare to eat it.
I still held my breath until I got out of the bathroom before daring to breathe, but the smell in the car wasn't very good either, nothing compared to the fresh and sweet air inside.
After swaying back to her seat, Chen Shuning, who had just eaten a large box of fruit salad, was not hungry, but she still pretended to take out a steamed bun and a bottle of meat sauce for dinner.
As for the steamed buns and donkey rolls that Chen Ma had mentioned in the morning, Chen Shuning threw them into the space warehouse as soon as he got on the bus. Although Chen Ma said it was fine to eat them at night, in this kind of summer, in such a closed space, Chen Shuning really didn't dare to eat things that had been left outside all day.
So she chose to leave the steamed buns and meat sauce, which are more durable, outside. She planned to eat in the space whenever she had the chance in the remaining days, and just pretend to eat some steamed buns with sauce to get through the next few days on the train.
Oh right, there seem to be some pancakes that Aunt Chen made in the bag. They'll keep for a couple of days without any problems, and you can alternate them with steamed buns.
Although the chubby girl Wang Chunni across from him didn't ask to change her food, Chen Shuning smiled and scooped two large spoonfuls of meat sauce onto the lid of Wang Chunni's lunchbox when he saw her big eyes constantly shifting between the pancake roll with red chili and the steamed bun with meat sauce in his hand.
He said with a smile, "You should also try my mom's meat sauce. It's delicious in wraps or as a dip for steamed buns."
Wang Chunni was delighted to see the meat sauce in front of her. Without any hesitation, she poured the braised pork wrapped in the pancake back into the lunchbox, dipped the pancake in the meat sauce, and took a big bite.
Then he mumbled, "Shuning, your mother is so smart. Why didn't my father think of making me some meat sauce? He only thought that things wouldn't keep well in this weather, so he made the braised pork so salty that it wasn't tasty at all."
Upon hearing this, Xu Laidi quickly reached out and tugged at Wang Chunni's sleeve.
"Alright, keep your voice down. You're not satisfied with having meat to eat? Look at what other people are eating."
When Wang Chunni looked up, she saw Yang Xiaohong holding a dark, unrecognizable steamed bun made of some kind of dough in one hand and munching on a strip of pickled vegetables in the other. Even though Wang Chunni disliked Yang Xiaohong, she felt a little embarrassed and stuck out her tongue. She stopped talking and just ate her food in silence.
It turned out that Mr. Wang was worried that his daughter wouldn't eat well on the bus, so he made her favorite braised pork into several different kinds with varying levels of saltiness, packed them into several lunchboxes, and told her which one to eat first and which one to eat last.
Chen Shuning ate the first box, which was also the only one with a normal taste. The subsequent boxes were saltier than the last, because they were afraid the food would spoil in the heat.
Chen Shuning, who had barely managed to eat more than half a steamed bun, wanted to wrap the remaining half in oil paper and eat it for the next meal. After all, in this era where waste was considered shameful, the half of the white steamed bun in her hand was a precious thing.
Unexpectedly, just as she picked up the oil paper, Yang Xiaohong, who was sitting next to her, suddenly stood up and stumbled, bumping into Chen Shuning and knocking the half-eaten steamed bun in her hand to the ground.
Although he didn't see it clearly, Chen Shuning had a feeling that Yang Xiaohong had deliberately bumped into him.
Yang Xiaohong, who had bumped into Chen Shuning, did not immediately look at him or apologize. Instead, she reached out and picked up the half-eaten steamed bun from the ground.
Looking at Chen Shuning with a regretful expression, he said, "Waste is shameful, Chen. I can tell you're a clean person. You certainly wouldn't eat something that fell on the ground, would you? Why don't you give me this half-steamed bun? I'll eat it for you to avoid wasting it."
Without waiting for Chen Shuning's reaction, he took a big bite and ate it without even wiping it.
Looking at the steamed buns that were clearly covered in dust, Chen Shuning was speechless, completely stunned by Yang Xiaohong's actions.
He swallowed hard and said, "Hey Yang Xiaohong, I have no problem giving you this steamed bun, but it's dirty since it fell on the ground. Don't come looking for me if you get an upset stomach."
Seeing that Chen Shuning agreed, Yang Xiaohong smiled smugly, "This floor is so clean, it's much cleaner than my house."
Yang Xiaohong's words were true. Yang Xiaohong's mother had her younger brother after giving birth to her and her three sisters. Yang's parents, who had a strong preference for sons over daughters, not only favored their youngest son but also taught Yang Xiaohong and her sisters to prioritize their brother in everything.
As a result, the youngest brother of the Yang family was spoiled and arrogant. In addition to ordering his three older sisters to do chores, he often teased them and threw the food he didn't like on the ground for his sisters to eat.
