Because there was so much wild boar meat, and Chen Shuning really couldn't bear to see the bloody scene of slaughtering pigs, he stayed in the backyard to prepare containers for the meat.
As pieces of pork were brought back, Chen Shuning practically took out everything in the house—water tanks, buckets, wooden basins—that could hold anything, and used it to store the meat.
Even before they could put the meat down, they had no choice but to pile it up on the kitchen counter.
Looking at the piles of pork, Chen Shuning was really troubled. If there was no one else around, she could simply put the meat into her spatial storage, saving time and effort.
However, with so many people around, Chen Shuning dared not do it. But in desperation, he actually came up with a solution.
In her past life, she often saw videos on Douyin of rural areas in Northeast China storing food in ice buckets.
So he quickly emptied the buckets that were already filled with meat and borrowed two more from Wang Chunni and the others.
I filled the container with water as shown in the video, placed a small basin or something similar to use as a lid, and left it outside to freeze.
Because it was the first time and there was no experience, and a wooden tub was being used, and the ice inside couldn't be frozen solid, Chen Shuning would check the ice formation in the tub with a flashlight almost every hour.
When Chen Shuning checked for the third time, the front yard was still noisy, but He Chaoyang's pigs should have been cleaned up, since no one was bringing her meat anymore.
I glanced at the other rooms and realized that no one had returned yet, so they probably hadn't finished cleaning up.
Chen Shuning's ice bucket was almost frozen solid. The water inside had frozen to a thickness of about three or four centimeters, which was enough to keep out a mouse.
So Chen Shuning quickly scooped hot water from the pot to remove the mold. Fortunately, Chen Shuning is quite talented in this area.
All four ice buckets were molded in one piece and were perfect. Seeing that He Chaoyang and the others had not finished their work yet, Chen Shuning did not dare to go to the front yard to find them. So she had no choice but to carefully move the frozen ice buckets little by little into the woodshed.
He also cleared out a corner of the woodshed specifically to place the ice bucket, since it was a bit fragile and couldn't withstand any bumps. Chen Shuning was really worried about bumping into it when carrying firewood.
So Chen Shuning went to great lengths to move the water tanks that were originally in the corner little by little to make room for them.
After placing the four ice buckets against the wall, Chen Shuning added cold water to them and re-froze them. Only then did he begin to place the wild boar meat, whose skin was already covered with a thin layer of ice, into the ice buckets one by one to freeze.
Having learned from experience, this time Chen Shuning only needed to keep track of the time and check back in three hours.
During this time, Chen Shuning was also busy, reprocessing the irregularly cut pieces of meat into shapes that were easier to arrange.
The front yard gradually quieted down as Chen Shuning prepared to remove the film from her second batch of ice buckets.
As soon as He Chaoyang and Chen Jiandang returned to the backyard, they saw Chen Shuning holding a flashlight in one hand and carrying hot water in the other, pouring it onto a wooden bucket. Neither of them understood what she was doing.
He Chaoyang didn't say much, and directly took the hot water from Chen Shuning's hand and asked, "I'll do it, just tell me how to do it."
Although Chen Shuning was also exhausted, she thought that the two of them had only eaten breakfast and must be hungry after a long day, so she quickly dodged He Chaoyang's hand that was about to take the hot water.
"I'll finish this in a bit. The food is still warm in the pot. You and Jian Dang should go inside and eat quickly."
He Chaoyang insisted on taking the hot water from Chen Shuning's hand and said, "Let Jiandang go in and eat first. It'll be faster if I help you. It's already past 12 o'clock. You should rest after we're done."
Chen Shuning couldn't argue with him, so he gave the hot water in his hand to He Chaoyang. Seeing this, Chen Jiandang didn't go back to eat first, and in the end, all three of them stayed.
The four ice buckets were unwrapped in no time. Looking at the ice buckets, even He Chaoyang couldn't help but praise Chen Shuning's method.
However, the woodshed is only so big, and it's already piled with firewood and coal. Now, with eight large ice buckets piled up, there's really no room to even step inside.
In the end, He Chaoyang noticed that the ice bucket wasn't too tall and suggested that they nail a wooden frame for it tomorrow to save space.
When Chen Shuning thought of a shelf, the first thing that came to mind was a wine rack. So he gave He Chaoyang a brief description, saying that he wanted a shelf like that.
He Chaoyang readily agreed.
With so many people, it was quick to clean up, and the three of them filled the four newly made wooden buckets with meat in no time.
Seeing that there was still a lot of meat left, Chen Shuning picked out some lean meat, added seasonings and marinated it, planning to make some dried meat, pork jerky and other meat products that can be stored for a long time tomorrow.
He Chaoyang and Chen Jiandang were exhausted after a long day. After hastily eating a bite of food, they quickly washed up and went to bed early.
Chen Shuning got up twice more in the middle of the night to make ice buckets, making a total of eight more.
By the time she had placed the ice bucket and meat into the woodshed, it was already past four in the morning.
Exhausted to the point of not wanting to move a finger, Chen Shuning didn't even have the strength to wash up. She took a bottle of mouthwash from her spatial storage, rinsed her mouth, climbed onto the kang (heated brick bed), and fell into a deep sleep.
The next morning, Chen Shuning slept until after 10 a.m. If he hadn't been so hungry, he could have slept some more.
Chen Shuning sat up groggily and glanced at her watch before realizing she had overslept.
I quickly got dressed and went downstairs; it was already broad daylight outside.
