Chapter 40 Moral Kidnapping

He Chaoyang had his back to the kitchen door, so Yang Wanqiu didn't recognize him as the man she had taken a liking to on the train. Otherwise, she wouldn't have said those things, as she always needed to maintain her image in front of a handsome man.

Yang Wanqiu was really unlucky today. She thought she had gotten along well with her new neighbor these past few days, and the two of them had agreed to go to town together to buy things today.

Yang Wanqiu, who was originally planning to take advantage of Gu Xinyi, who seemed to have plenty of money, had already figured out how to swindle something from her.

Little did she expect that as soon as they arrived in town, Gu Xinyi would say that she had a relative at home she needed to visit, and then told Yang Wanqiu to go to the supply and marketing cooperative to buy things before leaving.

But Yang Wanqiu was unwilling to do that. In order to get the better of Gu Xinyi, she even turned down invitations from Tian Mi and Zhang Tingting, who both seemed to be quite wealthy.

So she suggested going to visit relatives with Gu Xinyi, but little did she know that Gu Xinyi didn't have any relatives at all; it was just an excuse she made up to go to the black market, so naturally she wouldn't take her along.

As soon as Yang Wanqiu arrived in town, she was left behind by Gu Xinyi. With no other option, she had to go to the supply and marketing cooperative by herself. After all, she had moved out and was living alone, and she lacked many things. So even if she was reluctant to spend money, she had to pay for them herself.

Furthermore, she had heard a lot from the older educated youth about how tiring the autumn harvest was, and although she was reluctant to spend the money, her health was also important.

Unable to gain any advantage, Yang Wanqiu had no choice but to pay out of her own pocket to buy some meat and eggs to nourish herself during the autumn harvest.

However, she underestimated how much importance everyone attached to the autumn harvest. Not to mention that almost all the new educated youth from the educated youth compound came to town to buy things today, even villagers who are usually reluctant to spend money would come to buy some good things for their families to nourish their bodies during the autumn harvest on this day of holiday before the harvest.

Of course, it wasn't that the older educated youth didn't want to buy, but they didn't have much money, and they also knew that there were many people buying things at this time.

So they don't join in the fun. Usually, the older educated youth will buy a few eggs from the villagers on this day, and boil them during the autumn harvest to nourish themselves.

So when Yang Wanqiu entered the supply and marketing cooperative, she couldn't see meat or eggs, let alone the meat and egg counters.

Undeterred, she was pushed and shoved through the crowd, only to find that she hadn't even touched the edge of the counter. Instead, her clothes, which she had only worn a few days ago, had been torn open by someone's basket.

Filled with resentment, she left the supply and marketing cooperative empty-handed and disappointedly went to the state-run restaurant where she had arranged to meet Gu Xinyi.

Because I hadn't ordered anything and was just sitting there, I got a lot of dirty looks from the waiters, even though it wasn't mealtime.

In addition, everyone was struggling financially these days, so there weren't many people eating at state-run restaurants. That's why the waiter didn't kick her out; otherwise, she might not have even had a place to stay and would have had to squat on the street.

This angered Yang Wanqiu, who was always proud and arrogant. She secretly vowed that when Gu Xinyi arrived, she would definitely get more things from her.

Yang Wanqiu waited for most of the day, until Gu Xinyi returned at 1:30. Looking at Gu Xinyi's heavy basket, Yang Wanqiu's mood worsened.

Yang Wanqiu felt a pang of resentment towards Gu Xinyi whenever she thought about how she hadn't bought anything and had even torn Gu Xinyi's favorite new dress.

Moreover, she used to take advantage of Chen Shuning, so when she saw Gu Xinyi carrying so many things, she couldn't resist. Her first reaction was to lift the small floral cloth covering the basket.

Gu Xinyi's basket was indeed full of things, all taken from her spatial supermarket: rice, flour, chicken, duck, fish, meat, oil, salt, soy sauce, vinegar, and everything else.

However, due to the tight schedule, she hadn't checked the items yet. And because of her experience at the black market, Gu Xinyi was unwilling to let anyone see the unchecked items. So she avoided Yang Wanqiu's hand and placed the basket a little further away from Yang Wanqiu.

At the same time, she deliberately changed the subject, saying, "I'm sorry, Wanqiu, my relatives are too hospitable. They insisted on letting me stay for lunch before letting me go. I'm really sorry for coming back so late."

Yang Wanqiu was already unhappy about Gu Xinyi's behavior of avoiding her hand from looking at the basket. She had been waiting for her for most of the day on an empty stomach, but Gu Xinyi had already eaten lunch and returned. Yang Wanqiu felt that Gu Xinyi was treating her like a fool, and this realization made her face darken.

She said in an unfriendly tone, "Gu Xinyi, how can you be like this? Yesterday, Tianmi and Zhang Tingting asked me to come here with them so I could be with you, but I didn't agree. And what did you do?"

As soon as we arrived in town, you left me behind and went to visit your relatives. Not only that, you didn't come back until after we had finished eating lunch together, which was supposed to be our lunch.

Is this how you treat your friends? I really misjudged you. With a disappointed look on her face, Yang Wanqiu picked up the empty basket at her feet and was about to leave.

As expected, Yang Wanqiu's words successfully aroused Gu Xinyi's sense of guilt.

Feeling that she had indeed gone too far, Gu Xinyi quickly grabbed Yang Wanqiu and apologized as she saw her about to leave: "I'm sorry, Wanqiu, I was planning to have lunch with you, but my relatives were just too enthusiastic, and I felt bad refusing them on our first visit."

How about this? I'll treat you to dinner as an apology, okay? Please forgive me this time and don't be angry anymore.

Gu Xinyi did intend to have dinner with Yang Wanqiu, but she didn't expect that the black market in reality was not as easy to find as described in novels. After wandering around for a long time, she finally found the black market, which was already past noon.
