Chapter 42 Beautiful Misunderstanding

Since most of the things Chen's mother sent were things she had already bought while she was at home, Chen Shuning knew roughly what they were.

So after finding the scissors, Chen Shuning first cut open the two burlap sacks that her older brother had sent.

In the sack that my older brother sent, besides the military overcoat that Chen Ma had mentioned, there was also a Lei Feng hat, a pair of cotton rubber shoes, a women's military uniform, and a set of thick thermal underwear that only the military has. All of these were unworn laundry clothes, and of course, none of these uniforms had insignia.

Wearing military uniforms was quite popular during this era. Walking down the street, besides the three colors unique to this era—blue, black, and gray—military uniforms had the most colors.

Those with connections could get military uniforms from the army, while those without could buy fabric and make their own. Of course, although the styles were the same, there would be some differences in many details, unlike the ones my older brother sent, which were all genuine military uniforms.

I tried on the general's coat and military uniform briefly, and they fit perfectly. While I was happy, I couldn't help but complain. Did my older brother think I couldn't grow any taller or something? Why did he change all these clothes to fit me perfectly now? If I grew any taller, I wouldn't be able to wear them anymore.

Chen Shuning didn't even consider that her older brother hadn't been home for many years. When her brother was in the army, she was less than 1.4 meters tall. It was only in the years after the family split up that the original owner of this body grew taller. Otherwise, given Grandma Chen's stingy nature, she wouldn't have been able to reach her current height of 1.6 meters.

So Chen Jianjun had already changed into clothes that were a size too big. After getting the address, Chen's mother hurriedly prepared a lot of things for him, but forgot to tell her brother her current height. So Chen Jianjun could only estimate the result himself.

However, Chen Shuning never dreamed that, just as her older brother had predicted, her height would indeed remain at 1.6 meters. Of course, this height was not considered short in this era; it was considered average.

Besides clothes, Chen Jianjun also sent her a lot of odds and ends, like a military water bottle. Her old water bottle was still in good condition and usable. This new one will be perfect for He Chaoyang to use tomorrow, as he needs a water bottle to go up the mountain to chop firewood.

There are also military-style backpacks, which are quite popular these days. The rest are all food items, such as military-supplied compressed biscuits and canned food, as well as local specialties and snacks from Haishi. They are all quite heavy. I think the bag that I couldn't lift at the post office during the day must be this one.

It's unclear what image the original owner had in her older brother's mind, but aside from a few pieces of clothing, the two large sacks were almost entirely filled with food.

After putting the clothes into the closet and sorting out the food, Chen Shuning unpacked the burlap sack that his mother had sent.

First, there was the burlap sack containing bedding. There was a large quilt that weighed at least ten pounds and another quilt that took up more than half of the sack, which is why the sack was light. Then there was a thick mattress and a bright red sweater, and the sack was completely full.

Opening the second one, I found a set of navy blue cotton-padded clothes, a pair of rubber high-top rain boots, a raincoat, and several cans of luncheon meat. I wondered how much money the family had spent on these things, and whether they had any money left.

Although she didn't want to admit it, Chen Shuning really missed home. She missed her serious but not strict father, her sharp-tongued but kind-hearted mother, her younger brother who secretly slipped her money before leaving, and even her older brother and sister whom she had never met.

After casually putting everything into the cabinet, thinking that He Chaoyang and the others might not be back for a while, she went up to the kang (a heated brick bed), spread out the bedding, and sat on the kang to wait for them.

Looking at the night sky through the bright glass window, in this era before pollution, the moon looks big and round, hanging high in the sky, shining on the earth, as if it is coating the earth with a layer of silver light, ethereal and dreamlike.

The sky was filled with dazzling stars, scattered across the velvety black night sky, resembling a beautifully decorated stage, just waiting for dancers in gorgeous costumes to take the stage. The chirping of insects and croaking of frogs in the courtyard accompanied the dancers like a symphony orchestra.

Surrounded by such beautiful scenery, Chen Shuning's initial unease upon arriving in this strange world was inexplicably healed. She sat quietly, admiring the beautiful night sky. Even the distant Daqingshan Mountain, whose outline was barely visible, looked like a beautiful ink painting to her.

Immersed in the beautiful scenery, Chen Shuning didn't know how long she had been sitting there when she was suddenly pulled back to her senses by the roar of a car engine.

Knowing that He Chaoyang and the others had returned, they took the oil lamp and went down to the ground.

The first person to enter the courtyard was He Chaoyang. Under the moonlight, his resolute and handsome face was as cold as a thousand-year-old ice, revealing his impatience.

Yang Wanqiu followed closely behind He Chaoyang, looking anxious, and kept talking to the tall man.

Next to enter the courtyard were Gu Xinyi, who was being helped by Liu Shumei and was limping along, with Gao Hongyuan beside her looking worried and helpless. Bringing up the rear was Feng Baoguo, who was turning around to lock the gate.

Looking at this group of people, Chen Shuning immediately lost the mood for small talk, especially since Gu Xinyi, who might be a transmigrator with a spatial ability like him, was among them. Chen Shuning was even less willing to move closer.

He nodded to Liu Shumei and Gu Xinyi, then handed the oil lamp and the key to the back room to He Chaoyang. "Brother He, this is the key to the back room. It's getting late, so I'll go back to sleep now. You've had a long day, so you should get some rest too."
