The thing Chen Shuning found hardest to adapt to after transmigrating to this world was the early to bed and early to rise routine. In her previous life, as a senior executive, staying up late was commonplace for her, but getting up at 5 a.m. every day was torture for her.
But now, she has achieved the freedom to stay up all night.
Since moving out, she often secretly watches TV and movies on her social media, and it's not uncommon for her to treat herself to a small meal or snack.
But getting up early was a real nightmare for her. She had to start work at six every day. Even though most of her breakfasts were smuggled out of her space, and she would simply cook some porridge or soup every morning, she still had to get up at 5:30 at the latest.
But this is also quite a problem. Ever since she moved in by herself, she has had to secretly put her phone on vibrate and under her pillow to wake herself up every morning.
Because Yang Wanqiu and Gu Xinyi returned late, almost no one in the backyard had gone to sleep, plus He Chaoyang, who was serving in the army. So Chen Shuning, who had returned to her small house, did not dare to go into the space to watch movies as she usually did.
Seeing that it wasn't too late, and knowing that she wouldn't be able to sleep anyway, Chen Shuning decided to prepare all the ingredients for tomorrow's breakfast so that she could save a lot of time cooking in the morning.
Before the holiday, the team leader held a meeting and said that during the autumn harvest, lunch would be eaten in the fields.
If it were just her alone, it would be easy; she could just steam some buns and eat them with sauce to fill her up. But now there are guests at home, who have stayed specifically to help her. On the one hand, she can't ask for leave on her first time participating in the autumn harvest, and the brigade leader can't grant her leave either. On the other hand, she can't let them cook for themselves.
Putting aside whether He Chaoyang can cook or not, even if he could, she shouldn't do it that way. Perhaps she should prepare lunch in the morning, keep it warm in the pot, and let Brother He come back to eat at noon.
The weather isn't exactly hot these days, but if the food isn't prepared properly, it won't necessarily spoil by the morning, but it will definitely affect the taste. So, there are some things to consider when choosing the dishes.
Chen Shuning plans to steam more buns as her main food. Besides eating them for breakfast, she can also take them to the fields for lunch, which is convenient and filling.
While kneading the dough, Chen Shuning pondered what dishes to make for He Chaoyang for lunch. Since the steamed buns were to be taken to the fields, they shouldn't be too conspicuous, so she decided to make a mixture of three types of dough.
Chen Shuning scooped out cornmeal, wheat flour, and sorghum flour in a certain ratio. While kneading the dough, she secretly added a little spiritual spring water and milk. She added only a small amount, which made the steamed buns more fragrant, sweet, and soft, and you couldn't taste the milk.
Let's make a spicy soup. Tofu isn't common in the village, so I won't add it. Shiitake mushrooms can be replaced with dried mushrooms from the mountains. Eggs, wood ear mushrooms, carrots, and cilantro are all readily available. The wood ear mushrooms and dried mushrooms were given as gifts when we built the house last time by the team leader's wife, who said it was a return gift.
The local specialties from Heilongjiang Province were said to have been picked by his family in the back mountains and were not worth much, so Chen Shuning didn't stand on ceremony. In addition to giving him a lot of dried mushrooms and wood ear fungus, the brigade leader's wife also promised to take Chen Shuning into the mountains to pick wild products after the autumn harvest, which made Chen Shuning very happy.
Chen Shuning was from Northeast China in his previous life. When he was a child, his favorite thing to do was to go into the mountains with his friends to collect wild products. The feeling of standing among the towering mountains, breathing in the fresh air, feeling the cool mountain breeze, and walking along the mountain path full of wildflowers, like a treasure hunt, is really addictive.
Feeling that his thoughts had wandered off course, Chen Shuning quickly patted his head to bring himself back to his senses and turned his attention back to tomorrow's meals.
We've got the main course and soup; all that's left are the side dishes and Brother He's lunch.
Thinking that the pickled vegetables she made a few days ago should be ready to eat, I'll take out a plate of them tomorrow morning, and add a plate of fermented bean curd for breakfast.
Lunchtime was easy for her; she could just bring some soup and steamed buns she had made in the morning, along with a small bottle of a certain auntie's signature pork and mushroom sauce from the supermarket, and that would be enough for a meal.
However, lunch for He Chaoyang was a bit of a problem. After all, they were practically acquaintances. If he cooked too well, he was afraid that if his brother told his family, they would worry that she was spending money recklessly and not knowing how to manage her finances. They would then have to cut back on their own expenses to send her things, which wouldn't be good.
But if it was too shabby, Chen Shuning would feel bad. After all, although the other person was taking care of him because of his classmate relationship with his older brother, it really didn't have to go to this extent.
You know, chopping firewood in the mountains is hard work, and she really felt bad if she didn't give the person a good meal.
After pondering for a while, Chen Shuning decided to take out a chicken from her space, chop it into small pieces, marinate it with seasonings, and then put it back in her space. She planned to make honey-glazed chicken pieces the next morning. This dish is quite delicious with steamed buns, especially the thick and sweet broth. She could eat at least two steamed buns with it.
In the countryside, some people raise chickens. When I was riding in an oxcart, I heard some of the women on the cart talking about how they planned to kill chickens to nourish their families during the autumn harvest. So this dish is neither particularly outstanding nor considered a slight to the guests.
After taking care of everything, Chen Shuning noticed that no one had returned yet, so she fetched water to wash up and then took the oil lamp into the house.
Looking at the four large sacks on the ground, I felt a little sad and heartbroken. Parents always have the same love for their children. Mr. and Mrs. Chen are the kind of people who don't say it, but their concern for each other is no less.
What's remarkable is that Mr. and Mrs. Chen didn't have the same patriarchal mindset as many parents in this era, nor did they favor any of their children; they treated all four siblings equally.
