People in the 1970s were poor, but they weren't stupid or short-sighted!
If there were really good stuff, it would have been taken long ago; it's impossible for it to be left in the junkyard waiting for someone to find a bargain.
The items that remain in the scrap yard are those that others don't want.
Because of the large wolfhound at the entrance, Fang Qiao and Xiao Jing didn't approach it directly. Instead, they stood at a safe distance and called out, "Is anyone home?"
"have."
Inside the junkyard, an old voice was heard first, followed by the sound of a door opening.
Fang Qiao looked in the direction of the sound and then discovered that not far behind the big wolfhound, there was a small wooden house, which was blocked by large pieces of broken copper and scrap iron, so she did not notice it at first.
The old man was around sixty years old, somewhat hunchbacked, wearing faded clothes and black cloth shoes.
He looked up at Fang Qiao and Xiao Jing, and seeing that their hands and backs were empty, they were obviously not there to sell scrap metal, so he asked, "What are you doing here?"
Fang Qiao replied, "I want to find some books among the junk."
The old man nodded and said, "The dog is on a leash, it won't bite. Come in."
"Follow me." He hunched over and led Fang Qiao and Xiao Jing toward the pile of waste paper in the northwest corner, saying as they walked, "These tattered notebooks and books are sold for 3 cents a pound. If you want to take them out, it will cost 10 cents a pound. If you think the price is acceptable, go ahead and pick some."
Fang Qiao nodded: "Okay."
Although the books were heavy, the price of one cent per pound was still within Fang Qiao's acceptable range and not too expensive.
"Call me to weigh it after you've chosen." With that, the old man turned and walked towards the small wooden house.
"OK."
As soon as the old man left, Fang Qiao called to Xiao Jing, "Let's go upstairs and pick some. You look for elementary and middle school, and I'll look for high school."
She hadn't touched a book in years, and had forgotten most of what she had learned before. Even she herself had to start reviewing from scratch.
