As Maggie led Perkin back to their room, they inevitably attracted frequent glances from the other nuns and priests.
A beautiful, holy, and warm-hearted saintess suddenly has a pale, terrifying, and so dark as to be unrecognizable knight by her side. Anyone would be curious enough to take a second look.
Fortunately, neither of the two people being scrutinized seemed to care, something Maggie had anticipated.
“I know you won’t cause trouble, and the people here won’t dare to mess with you. If anyone does, just kill them without asking me.”
Maggie turned into the empty corridor and then casually spoke to Perkin.
It's not appropriate to say these things in public; it would damage the saintly image.
Perkin, who had been looking down with a gloomy and indifferent expression, looked puzzled upon hearing this and stared at Maggie in surprise, seemingly not expecting her to say such a thing.
"But it's best not to let anyone find out that you did it. If there's a direct confrontation, just tell me and I'll handle it. If you still want revenge after this is over, then take him out in private."
Maggie, oblivious to Perkin's reaction, continued to give her instructions.
"And don't let anyone discover that you're a shadow assassin. It's best not to use dark magic. That's all I have to say."
In the original story, Perkin's temperament is no different from that of a viper; even if Maggie doesn't say anything, he will secretly take revenge.
Now that she has clearly told Perkin, he should be more restrained, or at least she will know and be able to prepare in advance to solve the problem.
Otherwise, too many people would die inexplicably, and suspicion might fall on her. Maggie didn't want to cause herself any more trouble.
Did you hear that?
With no response from behind for a long time, Maggie had no choice but to turn around and emphasize again, lest the person ignore her words.
"Um."
Perkin looked down at Maggie's hand before giving a soft reply.
Because he hadn't spoken for so long, the boy's voice was so hoarse it sounded almost like it had been sanded, and it carried an inexplicable chill.
"very good."
Maggie nodded in satisfaction. There was nothing she could do; Perkin was a very useful assassin. This was a way of showing him respect and tolerance. She could tolerate his personality, but constantly using slave contracts would only make him more rebellious.
She's saying this now to prevent him from interfering with her plans later.
"For now, you'll be my personal attendant. If you have nothing else to do, you'd better stay outside my room. This is the Temple of Light, and wandering around could lead to unfavorable situations for you."
As they talked, they reached the door of the room. Maggie pushed the door open and went in, looking at Perkin and gesturing for him to come in.
To everyone's surprise, Perkin, who had been quite compliant, stood still and didn't move. There seemed to be a hint of complexity in his usually dark and empty eyes.
"Come in."
Maggie didn't understand why he was acting strangely, so she patiently repeated herself.
"..."
Perkin remained motionless, his eyes fixed on Maggie, his emerald green snake-like pupils sending shivers down one's spine.
"Don't make me say it a second time."
Maggie couldn't do anything with him, her tone suddenly turned cold, and her face became gloomy.
After a long standoff, Perkin finally spoke in a hoarse voice.
"A woman's room..."
Upon hearing this, Maggie paused in her movement of stepping aside to let him in, and countless thoughts flashed through her mind.
Finally, she remembered a common fact: in the Middle Ages, if noble ladies and wives invited men into their private quarters, it was tantamount to wanting to have a sexual encounter with them.
"..."
Maggie stared silently at Perkin, momentarily speechless. She'd made such a basic mistake; even the child was getting impatient...
An awkward and strange atmosphere filled the air. After some time, Maggie walked out of the room, slammed the door shut, and prepared to find a prayer room.
Perkin's gaze swept over Maggie's embarrassed back, his eyes filled with both confusion and inquiry.
Maggie quickened her pace, wanting to get this over with as soon as possible.
The Temple of Light has many prayer rooms, which are generally used to receive commoners and nobles and listen to their complaints about their sins.
Maggie casually pushed open the door to a prayer room, straightened her skirt, and sat down gracefully. She then pointed to the seat next to her, indicating it was for Perkin.
Perkin's eyes darted around slightly as he glanced at Maggie's face before sitting down in the chair.
“The temple has no guards, and you can come and go freely with your abilities. I now need you to deal with a guy named ‘Ted’.”
Maggie's tone was so calm that it didn't sound like she was asking him to kill someone; it sounded more like she was asking him what he wanted for breakfast.
She went to great lengths to gather people around her, so of course she wanted to make full use of them. She was also concerned that the underground slave auction site in Santa Fe City hadn't been dealt with yet.
According to the original storyline in the first volume, the stronghold in Santa Fe City had already been destroyed by Perkin at this point, exposing a great deal of evidence of the Zefneria family's crimes.
Now that the base is still operating normally because of her interference, Maggie naturally wants to find a way to get rid of it.
“He has a list of buyers for the 'Rosa multiflora' potion. Intercept all of them if you can, and bring back his slave trading records.”
Maggie must start collecting evidence of the Zefneria family's misdeeds from now on, so that she won't be implicated if the Duke's mansion falls.
Perkin didn't speak, seemingly deep in thought, before finally opening his mouth to speak.
"Ted is?"
She raised an eyebrow slightly, revealing a playful smile.
"The owner of the slave auction house is also the source of your nightmares."
I'm sure she doesn't need to say much for Perkin to remember. Someone as vengeful as him probably already has Ted's face etched into his mind a thousand times over.
"good."
Perkin's snake-like eyes instantly shrank to needle-like size, and he nodded in agreement without the slightest hesitation, as if he hated Ted to the core.
Maggie smiled with satisfaction; she liked this approach. Handing her enemy over to Perkin was the perfect choice.
"He made a contract with a mid-level demon. If the sneak attack fails, leave immediately. Don't let him successfully become a demon. You can't beat him with your current strength."
She provided Perkin with crucial intelligence so that the plan could be successfully completed.
Time passed slowly, and Maggie told Perkin all the information about Ted from the story. Although he didn't speak, it was clear that he was listening attentively.
When Maggie couldn't recall any more clues, the two stopped chatting.
"This is the first task I'm giving you, and I hope you won't let me down."
Maggie slowly stood up and looked down at him.
"If having so many clues still doesn't kill Ted, then I guess I don't need you anymore."
For Maggie, this was not a threat but an objective fact. Even the human form of the Dark God could not make her efforts go to waste.
She hasn't lost yet.
Maggie's eyes were nonchalant yet subtly oppressive, as if telling Perkin that she needed a useful person, not a useless one.
"Um."
A dull, dry nasal sound came from Perkin's nasal cavity, which could be considered as his agreement to Maggie.
