Later generations often marvel at Yun Zhe's many amazing inventions and creations during his "Thirty Years in the Western Lands," but the most enduring and widely disseminated was not Yun Zhe's most advocated compulsory education law, but rather his idea of using horse-drawn carriages to transport soldiers. This idea first appeared on the way from the Paz family to the Donic front.
There were fifty wagons carrying grain and people, and although the wagons carrying people varied in size, they quickly alerted Andrew and Serena. They had taken the lead and caught up with all the cavalry.
In fact, such a large convoy of carriages was quite attractive, even if they did not follow the planned marching route to their designated positions within the group.
"What's going on? We have so many supplies and troops now? I remember we only managed to gather thirty carts," Andrew said, looking at the convoy behind him in confusion. They had completely broken away from the main group and become an independent unit. A magnificent procession of fifty carts.
Yun Zhe jumped off the carriage and walked up to Andrew's horse, who had an expression that said, "So that's how it is, I should have thought of that sooner." "My lord, I have twenty carriages that can transport a lot of soldiers, at least a hundred-man squad. Are you interested in doing something big?"
Andrew frowned, trying to connect Yun Zhe's words with the scene he had witnessed to understand what "going all out" meant.
“We can spare 300 men to reach the front lines sooner, and the vehicles can also be used as simple defensive fortifications for rapid defense.”
“What’s the point of sending such a small force ahead of time? It won’t strike the enemy or create any deterrent effect; it will only become bait for their attack,” Andrew strongly opposed. He felt that someone as cautious as Yun Zhe would not make such a suggestion.
"Thirty carts, carrying two hundred men, plus two hundred cavalry. If the enemy wants to wipe us out, it will probably take them some time. As long as we can coordinate with the soldiers in Donic City from the inside, and finally break into the city, there shouldn't be any problem."
"Why are you so determined to run towards Donic? There are at least a thousand garrison troops in the city, enough to hold out until we get there. This is too risky, I can't agree to it." Andrew was unusually annoyed. Although he wasn't good at strategy, he didn't have the bad temper of those reckless men. He was especially good to his soldiers and was very receptive to different opinions. But this time, Andrew not only opposed it, but was also unusually angry, which surprised even Andrew himself.
Yun Zhe looked at Andrew with great confusion, which made Andrew regret his attitude earlier.
Yun Zhe shook his head, then bowed and returned to his car. Inside, a small head peeked out, looking curiously in their direction.
“Andrew doesn’t even know that Donic has less than 500 men left. What are Serena and her group up to? What if they’ve already captured the castle by the time we get to the city? It won’t be so easy to take it down then.” Yun Zhe sat back in the car, looking sullen, and said to Gao, who was driving, “Tell Caroline to slow down and be prepared for an encounter.”
Gao nodded, then gestured to a mounted soldier beside him to go ahead and inform Caroline.
Yun Zhe, meanwhile, began to brood over the possible scenarios. The more he thought about it, the more desperate he felt. He couldn't help but want to confront Serena. If he hadn't been afraid of exposing his ability to see through people's hearts, he would have jumped off the carriage.
At this moment, a messenger approached Yun Zhe's carriage and said, "Lord Andrew has ordered that Knight Yun Zhe go to discuss the matter of advancing."
Upon hearing this, Yun Zhe perked up and decided that even if he had to lie or deceive, he would get Andrew to send a troop to provide support.
What Yun Zhe didn't know was that Andrew had actually changed his mind, and it was all because of Serena's constant urging.
Yes, Serena had been hinting at a rapid march to Donic. Andrew was urged again after seeing Yun Zhe off. This revealed the reason for Andrew's impatience: Serena's unrealistic demands for marching speed. However, Andrew still considerately believed it stemmed from Serena's concern for Donic. Therefore, he felt Yun Zhe's idea was feasible; as long as this rapidly advancing force wasn't completely wiped out, their numerical disadvantage wouldn't be too significant.
So, at Yun Zhe's insistence, Andrew gathered more than thirty wagons and led more than two hundred soldiers, along with Yun Zhe's one hundred and twenty men and a hundred-man squad from Arthas, and charged toward Donic in a grand procession with the two hundred cavalry.
Meanwhile, a fierce battle was raging outside the city of Donic. Philby, the defending general, and George, the Donic family's old steward, stood atop the high city walls, watching wave after wave of untrained recruits rush to the crumbling walls to engage in a hopeless battle with the soldiers of the Arles and Terra families.
The battle was fierce, but what they didn't expect was not the brutal defense of the city, but that they actually managed to hold out for three whole days under such circumstances.
Yes, Donic City had held out for three days under intense attack. Philby and George both felt a sense of disbelief, as if they were in another world.
"How many of us do we have?" George asked, looking at Philby, who was dressed and ready to go again.
"There's one last hundred-man team left. You know, I like to hold back a little something. I hope this will open their eyes and maybe we can hold out for another day."
George looked at the old knight, who was over forty years old, and his eyes welled up with tears. They had worked together for more than twenty years, and it was very likely that today would be their last.
