Chapter 10 City Gate Death Ground

At the end of the road, a majestic black landscape began to appear. Yun Zhe looked into the distance and saw a rather large castle.

The castle was dotted with firelight, and inside, the sounds of battle were deafening.

As Yun Zhe drew closer, the shouts of battle grew clearer. Yun Zhe saw dozens of soldiers wrestling at the castle gate, with more than a dozen corpses lying on the ground.

The blood-soaked battlefield was so stimulating that Yun Zhe felt somewhat overwhelmed. His bloodlust was palpable, causing him immense pain. He struggled to control himself and refrained from lunging forward to bite the necks of those people.

Yun Zhe quickly assessed the situation. About twenty people formed a formation and rushed in, while there were also a dozen or so people at the entrance, relying on wooden boxes and sandbags to put up a last stand.

Wood lay on his horse and looked up. "It's my brother's soldiers attacking the city." He strained to look up at a higher place where there was also fighting, but on a much smaller scale.

"Our agreement?" Yun Zhe tilted his head.

“You…” Wood swallowed hard. “You protected me and brought me back to the city safely. I will give you a thousand gold coins and a carriage as a reward.”

“Very good,” Yun Zhe said, leading his horse toward the city gate. His action attracted the attention of both sides at the city gate.

In fact, both the attackers and defenders had noticed the man and horse long ago. Although it was unusual for this combination to appear here at this moment, neither side took them seriously. At this moment, anyone with a modicum of sense would know to give way upon seeing this scene.

However, the pair clearly didn't take the tense situation seriously and continued to slowly walk towards the castle gate.

"Who?" A soldier raised his spear. Yun Zhe saw that the soldier was dressed in white cotton armor with silver shoulder armor, and looked very elite.

"Your brother's?" Yun Zhe asked Wood on horseback.

Wood grunted in response, but before the grunt was even finished, Yun Zhe had already raised his hand and shot an arrow into the soldier's chest. The crossbow bolt was so close that it almost pierced through his chest.

The soldier's eyes widened, and he fell straight down.

Yun Zhe quickly switched to a crossbow bolt, raised his hand, and shot an archer who was about to draw his bow and fire.

Wood's soldiers, all dressed in white and silver armor, were very conspicuous in the firelight of the night and were easy to identify.

Yun Zhe's appearance brought about a qualitative change in the offensive and defensive capabilities at the city gate.

Relying on his vampire speed and agility, Yun Zhe managed to make an ordinary single-shot crossbow perform like a Zhuge Repeating Crossbow, continuously firing bolts at the archers.

But Yun Zhe was suddenly horrified.

The method of killing was too smooth, and the slight sense of elation in his heart while killing was too perverse.

Yun Zhe was momentarily distracted when an arrow came straight at his face. At that moment, Yun Zhe was reflecting on why he had such a surging bloodlust. When he realized that an arrow was coming, he had already shifted his body slightly and dodged the arrow. Yun Zhe was marveling at his reaction speed when he raised his hand and shot an arrow. The archer fell to the ground.

Yun Zhe suddenly realized that something was wrong.

This body reacted faster than his thoughts could process...

Yun Zhe thought about how many people he had killed since he woke up, and these actions seemed to be just instinct... But it didn't seem to be instinct either, since he was consciously attacking, but his body's reaction seemed a bit excessive, or rather, too much like a real vampire.

"Ego, Id, Superego?" Yun Zhe sighed softly to himself. He had taken psychology as an elective in his sophomore year, but he hadn't studied it in depth. At this moment, he really didn't know how to analyze his strange behavior.

Yun Zhe stood on the battlefield in a daze. Fortunately, the archers had already been dealt with, and the scales of victory had completely tipped in his favor. Yun Zhe's imposing presence and actions had utterly terrified the soldiers, who quickly surrendered without hesitation.

The city's highest-ranking commander, Knight Luke, while instructing his men to bind those who had surrendered, glanced at the mysterious figure with the crossbow and the person sprawled on horseback beside him. Luke swallowed hard. The person on horseback looked vaguely familiar, but he dared not approach, for the aura emanating from the man before him screamed: Keep out of the way!

But just as Luke hesitated, the man's aura suddenly changed, no longer so sharp, no longer so aloof. Instead, it became clear, with a hint of confusion.

Yun Zhe led his horse toward the knight wielding a sword in both hands. The rider struggled to sit up halfway and waved at Luke.

Luke recognized him as his second son, Wood. His face lit up with joy, but before he could speak, Wood on horseback asked, "Uncle Luke, how are my father and mother...?"

"Ellie and Newrent are escorting them here. Once they arrive, we'll retreat to the manor." Luke gave Wood a quick look at his body. "Second Young Master, are you alright?"

Wood pointed to his buttocks. "We were ambushed. He was hit by an arrow there." After saying that, Wood looked at the corpses lying on the ground. "Brother, it really is brother..." Wood asked in a low voice, his face contorted with pain.

Luke nodded heavily, then looked at Yun Zhe and asked, "And who is this?"

"Traveler" Yun Zhe answered before Wood could speak.

A commotion erupted at the entrance. Yun Zhe looked over and saw a group of people rushing out of a small side door in a disheveled state. Among the soldiers were a couple in their pajamas and a child of about seven or eight years old.

Two crossbow bolts shot out from inside the gate, killing a soldier covering the rear. Immediately afterwards, more than ten soldiers armed with swords and shields rushed out, wielding their swords and slashing.

"Quick, go provide support!" Luke patted Wood on the shoulder and ordered the soldiers to go and meet him.
