At dawn, the rising sun in the east shone through the thin mist, casting rays of light upon the earth. At the ferry crossing, Yun Zhe's carriage slowly came to a stop.
"Sir, the bridge ahead is broken," the guard anxiously reported to Yun Zhe.
"How did it break? Was it burned through?"
"Sir, it seems the bridge surface was smashed through by a heavy object." The guard said this while also feeling repulsed by the sight he was seeing.
"Take me there and let me see!"
A large hole, over a meter in diameter, has appeared in the center of the long-unrepaired stone bridge over the rushing river. Yun Zhe walked to the vicinity of the hole; the bricks and stones around it were loose and tilted downwards, but there were no obvious cut marks. Clearly, the bridge surface had been directly crushed by some heavy object.
Yun Zhe stood at the entrance of the cave, looking left and right. Both sides were only wide enough for one person to pass through, but not enough for a horse to pass through. The size and location of this cave were simply perfect.
"Heh, I didn't expect that. How did they know I was going to Donicburg?" Yun Zhe looked around. In the distance from the bridge was a dense forest, right next to the road. And it was very close, only two or three hundred steps from the bridgehead.
"You two, take two planks from the carriage and place them here so one person and one horse can pass." Yun Zhe turned to the other side. "You guys come with me first and guard the bridgehead." After saying that, Yun Zhe jumped over the pit and walked to the bridgehead, staring intently at the distant woods.
If there's a backup plan, it'll probably be in the woods some distance away. Yun Zhe warned the mercenaries around him to keep an eye on things from that area.
But obviously, Yun Zhe and his group didn't need to worry about it. Just as they brought over four horses, a loud roar came from the distant woods, followed by the crackling sound of branches breaking.
Yun Zhe looked at the mercenary Aluru beside him, "What is this?!"
The mercenary swallowed hard. "Sir, if I'm not mistaken, it might be a giant."
"Giants?" Yun Zhe was taken aback; he had never heard of this species before. But his curiosity was short-lived, as the towering figures in the mist provided the answer.
Titans are actually just humans with unusually tall stature; they are less of a race and more of an exception. But an organization that can gather so many exceptions must also be something extraordinary.
Ten giants, each about three or four meters tall, wielding huge stones bound by iron chains, entire tree trunks, and massive iron swords, and clad in heavy iron armor, charged toward the bridge in a line.
This was a scene Yun Zhe had never witnessed before. A whole row of giants surged towards you like a tidal wave, the earth trembled, as if the whole world was shaking. This awe-inspiring sight left Yun Zhe stunned for a moment.
However, the distance of several hundred meters did not allow Yun Zhe to be stunned for too long. He quickly regained his senses and immediately issued the order.
"Everyone spread out! Protect yourselves from being killed first, then retaliate with crossbows when the opportunity arises. Listen to me, run!!"
The eight people immediately scattered in different directions. Yun Zhe looked at the giant dragging a huge stone directly in front of him, and guessed that the hole in the bridge must be his handiwork.
As Yun Zhe ran, he raised his hand and fired an arrow. The crossbow bolt struck the giant's armor and embedded itself deeply inside.
Yun Zhe was taken aback; the armor was much softer than he had imagined.
They scattered and fled, quickly attracting the giants' attention. Each of them chased after the other Aruru, completely captivated by their presence.
Meanwhile, on the bridge, Xixi, who had witnessed everything, began chanting a spell. Her forte was ice and water magic, and the current weather and location were perfect for her to unleash her power.
The giant seemed to realize the danger posed by Xixi. The giant holding the whole log was the first to react. He threw his log toward Xixi's location. The log grazed Xixi's head and hit the side of the bridge, but Xixi, who had already begun chanting, remained unmoved. At this moment, her eyes shone with blue light, and her whole body seemed to be shrouded in a blue halo.
Seeing that Xixi was alright, Yun Zhe finally felt relieved. He stared at the giant who no longer had any weapons and ran towards him.
Upon seeing this, the giant hesitated for a moment, then a ferocious smile appeared on his face, and he strode towards Yun Zhe.
Yun Zhe sensed the giant's disdain and murderous intent. This emboldened him, and he raised an arrow, aiming directly at the giant's cheek. The giant dodged the arrow with a sudden movement, and in a fit of rage, he reached out to grab Yun Zhe. Yun Zhe, however, drew another crossbow bolt and fired it.
The giant dodged again, and this time he narrowly escaped. A smile appeared on the giant's face, and then he saw a short sword fly directly towards one of his feet.
With a loud bang, the giant, though having dodged the final blow, lost his balance and fell to the ground. Without the slightest hesitation, Yun Zhe took advantage of the giant's fall, drew his longsword, and slashed directly at the giant's ankle. Then, he ran a few steps and, before the giant could get up, plunged his sword into the giant's neck.
The giant reached out to grab Yun Zhe, but Yun Zhe skillfully dodged, leaving a mark on the giant's hand before leaving.
Yun Zhe's successful counterattack made the soldiers on and below the bridge cheer, but it also angered the giants. They ignored the little people in front of them and instead surrounded Yun Zhe.
Dark clouds began to gather above the giants' heads. A faint rumble of thunder echoed within the clouds, causing the giants renewed panic. They looked at Yun Zhe before them, then at Xi Xi at the distant bridgehead, clearly troubled.
