The previously high morale was completely ruined by the arrival of Philby's routed troops. Although Yun Zhe and Philby took very proactive measures, the overall situation did not improve. Everyone was pessimistic and no one believed they could hold out in Fort Dorgnitz.
Yun Zhe was somewhat worried; he really didn't know how to change this terrible situation. He strolled along the city wall, surrounded by soldiers standing straight and staring silently ahead, but their thoughts kept pounding into Yun Zhe's mind, echoing repeatedly in his thoughts.
"This battle may be over. Everything will be over after tomorrow. I don't even know if I'll survive..."
"Although Lord Yun Zhe is very powerful, he probably has no way to deal with an absolutely strong opponent!"
"I don't want to die! How can I survive? Damn it, why am I on duty at this time today? If the enemy attacks tomorrow morning, it will be my turn. God, please let them attack after noon!"
Yun Zhe shrugged, unsure whether to be happy or sad. These soldiers, though demoralized, hadn't yet shown any intention of surrendering or deserting. That was quite remarkable.
Yun Zhe found an open space, stood by the city wall, and looked into the distance. The sky was a blanket of white, foreshadowing the approaching new day. Yet, he still hadn't come up with a complete solution.
"Could it really be the end?" Yun Zhe murmured to himself, a bitter smile appearing on his face.
Just as Yun Zhe was about to give up resistance and face his fate, a plume of black smoke suddenly rose from Kurman's camp in the distance, followed by firelight and the sound of commotion. On the chilly plains of early spring, distant sounds and sights traveled exceptionally fast.
Yun Zhe was invigorated. He immediately thought of a possibility: Blaze's cavalry had become a surprise force and played a huge role.
Without hesitation, Yun Zhe quickly ran down the city wall, shouting, "Prepare! Prepare to attack! Attack the enemy camp!!!"
Offense and defense can shift in an instant.
Blazer's timing was extremely cunning. Although it wasn't intentional on his part, he simply remembered Yun Zhe saying that early morning was when troops were least alert, so he launched the attack at that time. This early morning attack did indeed create a time difference with the other Kurman army's attack, and the surprise attack was extremely successful. Of course, Yun Zhe's timely counterattack also ensured this success. The two forces combined quickly routed the Kurman troops in the camp.
Geraint had four thousand soldiers under his command. Although the elite troops had been taken away by Kurman, these soldiers still outnumbered his attackers three to four times. However, this numerical advantage proved ineffective. The enemy, disguised as a supply convoy, entered the camp and quickly set fire to the supplies using the wind, forcing Geraint to flee in disarray and regroup at the village of Herak. Although the losses were better than expected, he knew that this rout had sealed his fate and completely thwarted Marquis Kurman's entire plan.
Standing on the city wall at the entrance of Herak village, Geraint felt utterly despondent for the first time.
Having achieved a resounding victory, Yun Zhe, along with Blaze, hurried back to Dorgonizburg to prepare for the next siege. With this successful surprise attack, the morale problem that had been troubling Yun Zhe completely disappeared, and the situation underwent a complete 180-degree turn, with the initiative in the battle once again in his hands.
Kuhlmann wasn't a superstitious man, but the numerous minor setbacks he'd encountered at the start of the day forced him to reconsider whether launching the attack today was a wise choice.
But the arrow was already on the string, and there was no turning back.
Kurmann arrived at the walls of Dorgonitzburg, but instead of the expected attack from Geraint in another direction, he was met with none. Puzzled, Kurmann still ordered the attack to begin.
The soldiers charged on horseback, shouting, towards another direction of Dorgonitz Castle, only to witness a strange sight: several Kurman flags were flying on the walls. Although they were Kurman flags, the soldiers did not believe that Geraint had already captured Dorgonitz Castle.
The flags of Donic flew over the city walls, while those of Kurman hung on the walls. This rare sight halted the advance of Kurman's Shadow Thorns.
Lanmarok, who was in charge, pushed up the visor of his helmet and looked at the strange scene on the city wall. When he thought of the quiet reality on the other side, he was suddenly startled. An idea that he dared not admit surfaced in his mind.
"Geraint lost?"
Lanmalok halted his attack and relayed his deduction to Marquis Kurman at the rear. Kurman, also finding it hard to believe, went to the city walls to confirm it himself. He sighed helplessly and said dejectedly, "Retreat, Lanmalok. The war is over..."
