"You're playing him?" Ellie withdrew her gaze and stared at Yun Zhe. She didn't understand why Yun Zhe had raised his longsword as if suppressed by his bloodline. If she hadn't known him well enough, she almost would have taken action.
"Great, he thought he had succeeded, so he naturally wouldn't make any unnecessary moves." Yun Zhe gasped for breath. "To be honest, I was really out of energy at the time, and I had a sword but no martial arts skills. It was a very dangerous situation."
"Tch, I don't believe it," Ellie glanced at the vampire with the missing leg and suddenly laughed, "What luck! This vampire has rings on both hands. Guess which one is the Sunshine Ring?"
Upon hearing this, Yun Zhe was overjoyed. "Of course I hope they are all of them, so that I can keep one and still sell four."
"How can you be so greedy? You're such a miser!"
"Hey, don't talk nonsense. Greed and stinginess are two different things." Yun Zhe said as he took off all four rings from the vampire's hand. "They're all things from a vampire scoundrel anyway, might as well take them."
Ellie didn't reply. Yun Zhe turned his head and saw that Ellie was frowning, seemingly deep in thought.
"What's wrong?" Yun Zhe asked curiously.
"Actually, to be honest, we're the real scum among vampires. We should protect humans, restrain our desires, and live in the world like humans..." Ellie hesitated before finally expressing her thoughts.
This is actually a problem that bothers her. She doesn't live like a vampire at all.
"Isn't this how normal vampires are supposed to be?" Yun Zhe was a little confused. In the vampire novels he read, the vampires who could be the protagonists all protected humans, restrained their desires, and incidentally had forbidden romances with human men and women. How did they become scoundrels?
Ellie pointed to the corpses beside her, "These are what most vampires look like..." After saying that, she looked at the corpses around her with a complicated expression.
Yun Zhe stood up, walked behind Ellie, and patted her on the shoulder. "What do you mean by 'most vampires'? You're not the majority. You're you. Just live your own life. Why care about the majority?"
“Look at me, I think this is how vampires should live, so I just live like this. I never care what other vampires think,” Yun Zhe continued to comfort her. Actually, it was clear from those diaries that this body's previous life aligned with most vampires' self-perception. But Yun Zhe wasn't a vampire after all, so he lived more like a human. Of course, he couldn't tell Ellie any of this.
Ellie paused, a sudden realization dawning on her. For years, she had felt she should live like a vampire, yet she couldn't let go of her pre-conversion chivalry. She was constantly torn, conflicted, which had caused her immense suffering over the decades. She didn't know if this was right or wrong, so she carefully preserved her way of life. She avoided contact with other vampires, fearing ridicule and, more importantly, the prospect of compromising and becoming the very thing she hated. Thus, she had lived a lonely and conflicted life all these years.
Yun Zhe's words just now made that vague idea that had been in her mind for years crystal clear.
Yeah, why should I care what they're like? I'm doing just fine as I am.
Once Ellie understood, she suddenly felt the world was vast and the mood was cheerful.
"The majority has its significance, and the minority has its significance. There's no need to dwell on whether you're in the majority or the minority. What matters isn't where you stand, but being able to face things with equanimity no matter where you are." This famous quote from Yun Zhe serves as a dessert after this heartwarming meal.
After listening, Ellie pondered for a long time and couldn't help but exclaim, "That's so well said. I never thought you could say something so reasonable."
Yun Zhe accepted the praise with a proud look on his face. He thought to himself, "Is it well said? Of course it is. This is the motto of my school, Avery. It would be strange if it wasn't good."
Immediately, the pride and smugness on Yun Zhe's face disappeared. He suddenly thought of those Aruru people, which made Yun Zhe's expression turn serious. "Let's go and see those Aruru people."
Ellie realized what was happening, nodded, and followed Yun Zhe back to the grove of trees.
Tonight's vampire slaughter was very efficient, but the Aruru people, who are good at escaping and hiding, still managed to save many people from this calamity.
Even so, the survival rate is less than one in ten.
Of course, if Yun Zhe and the others had arrived earlier, perhaps fewer people would have died.
The poet, having narrowly escaped death, was struggling to bandage Jess's broken leg. He didn't actually know how to bandage, but Jess's leg was bleeding profusely, exposing the white bone, and the sight pained him deeply. He felt he had to do something to ease his own suffering.
Jess's face turned pale; she was in so much pain she almost fainted, but she still patted the poet's shoulder, comforting him.
The poet looked at Jessie's bloodless face, his eyes stung, and tears welled up uncontrollably.
Jess looked weakly at the poet before her. This was the man she loved, but unfortunately, she was mute and now she had lost a leg, and she might not even survive. Thinking of this, even the optimistic Jess couldn't help but feel a little that it would be better to just die here.
She reached out and wiped away the poet's tears, stroking his shoulder as if she could touch the life she dreamed of.
The scattered Aruru people began to slowly gather together. They should have taken this opportunity to escape to the border. But they didn't leave; they hid in the shadows, observing and waiting.
Yun Zhe walked up to the tearful poet, frowned, and abruptly broke the poet's bandage.
