Seventy-Nine Burning Chariots

"Captain, bad news. We're running out of crossbows and arrows, and many of our spears are damaged. Should we retreat to a nearby high point and set these carts on fire?"

Gao and Caroline looked at each other and shook their heads. They decided to hold on a little longer; it would be dark soon, and they might not need to light the car anymore.

“Just in case, let’s pour the black oil on the car first,” Caroline suggested.

Gao thought for a moment and nodded.

At that moment, the enormous iron barrel formation appeared before them.

"Attention! Prepare for battle!" With a shout, the pikemen behind the wagons began thrusting fiercely into the gaps in the shields. This formation had appeared before, but after killing one man, the entire formation would usually crumble, completely exposed to the range of the surrounding archers. However, this time the results were minimal; several attacks yielded no effect. Instead, several pikemen and archers were killed by arrows fired from the gaps.

The armored formation quickly reached one side of the wagon formation. This time, the spearmen failed to achieve anything, and the archers had little opportunity to maneuver. However, the wagons remained a difficult defensive line to breach. But with this formation in place, the entire wagon formation was practically rendered ineffective.

Gao's face hardened with malice; the fallen soldiers were all his men. He disregarded Yun Zhe's admonition that commanders should never lead a charge unless absolutely necessary. Gripping a long spear, he thrust it forcefully into a gap in the shield. A painful groan echoed from the gap, followed by several arrows raining down on Gao. He hastily dodged, but was still struck by two arrows. Fortunately, neither was fatal, allowing him to continue commanding the battle.

"Fire rockets! Fire rockets in!" Gao shouted angrily as the massive armored formation blocked the way, causing more soldiers to surge forward.

Then he saw some of Lunlang's soldiers climb onto the roof of the wagons, and flames shot into the sky. On the other side, Caroline had already set the wagon formation ablaze.

Gao was taken aback, then ordered several soldiers with rockets to fire at the vehicle. Soon, an arc-shaped wall of fire blocked the breach.

The sky was dark, which made the wall of fire even more striking and impressive.
