"Then, Mr. Yun Zhe, why did you choose us?" Andrew pondered for a long time before finally asking the question that had been nagging at him for days.
"Have you forgotten?" Yun Zhe asked incredulously. "The Earl promised me a thousand gold coins. Who could resist the temptation of a thousand gold coins?"
A new residential area has been established next to the city of Perth, inhabited entirely by homeless people. The area is square, with straight roads, but the houses are all identical and very simple.
Surrounding this residential area was a simple wooden fence and several makeshift sentry posts. Today, two soldiers at one of these posts were questioning a rather suspicious man and two women. The man had gray hair, a robust build, wore a cloak, carried a large sword, had a small crossbow at his waist, and a dagger strapped to his leg—fully armed and quite conspicuous. Beside him was a tall, young woman with flaxen hair, wearing well-fitting leather armor and carrying a large crossbow. The woman next to her, with red hair and freckles, and a long whip coiled around her waist, was Carrie, the daughter of Glass, the captain of the Garai vampire hunter team.
The other two were Balin City's two most elite vampire hunters, Jerok and Rivia.
The reason they were with Jiali stemmed from the recent annihilation of all the vampire hunters in Jialai. Shortly after the massacre, the captain of the Balin vampire hunters received a plea for help from Glass. He quickly assembled his men and began a sweeping search of Jialai, but to no avail. Just as they were circling the Pas family territory, shocking news arrived: a large number of vampire…corpses had appeared near Balin.
Upon hearing the news, Bahrain's hunter captain, Arkham, was overcome with emotion. He struggled to accept that so many vampires in his city were unknown to him. Even more difficult to accept was the fact that these vampires had been killed by someone else.
So he hurriedly led his team back to Bahrain to conduct a thorough search. Only Jerok and Livia remained there to make a token effort.
Jerok and Rivia were also persistent people. They searched for more than a month without any clues, but they still did not give up. They took Carrie to the territory of Pass and endured the elements to carry out wilderness survival training.
Finally, their perseverance paid off. A little over ten days ago, they discovered five hastily buried corpses not far from their campsite. The wounds and bite marks on these bodies were unmistakably those of a vampire. The three men were thrilled; after searching for so long, they had finally found another clue to the vampire. Although they couldn't confirm that this vampire was the one they were looking for, the fact that it had drunk so much blood at once indicated that it was severely injured. Regardless, it was an excellent opportunity to kill it.
But since then, they haven't found any trace of the vampire. Meanwhile, a vampire lair has indeed been discovered in Bahrain, requiring the two of them to return. They happened to be near the city of Pas, so they agreed to go into town for a farewell drink before heading to Bahrain together to participate in the operation.
The three of them wondered why there were so many people near the city of Pas, while waiting for the guards to inspect them.
The two guards opposite them were questioning the three men very cautiously. Their caution stemmed mainly from the recent attack on the Earl. Although the specifics of the incident were varied, Lord Andrew had given a strict order that anyone intending to enter the city must be thoroughly questioned.
Unable to bear the guards' relentless questioning, a frustrated Carrie revealed her vampire hunter badge. This finally silenced the two guards.
"Um... several hunters? Does our Pass have vampires?" one of the guards asked in a trembling voice as the three approached.
Jerok glanced back at the guard, trying to make his expression as amiable as possible. "No one has been mysteriously disappearing lately, has anyone?"
The guard nodded.
Jerok smiled, "Then it's alright, we were just passing by for a drink..."
The guards looked relieved.
Walking a little further away, Livia suddenly looked at Gerald seriously and said, "I can sense that vampires have been here before."
Jerok was taken aback at first, glanced around, and then gave a mocking smile. "Stop being so paranoid, Livia. Haven't your intuition caused us enough trouble along the way?"
Livia wanted to argue and tell the two of them that her intuition was right this time. But seeing the looks in Jerok and Carrie's eyes, Livia wisely kept quiet.
Seeing the awkward atmosphere between the two, Carrie forced a smile and said, "I know a really good tavern in Pas City. Their fried insects are absolutely amazing. Let's go try them!"
The two were intrigued and nodded in agreement.
The tavern was bustling with activity, as it was lunchtime, and every table was packed. The three men, seeing there were no empty tables, were about to leave when the hospitable owner stopped them. He pointed to a large table in the corner, a table that could seat eight, but only three were currently seated.
"Please sit over there, gentlemen. We already arranged for those guests to sit together if any more guests come in," the owner said with a beaming smile, blocking the exit with his body and gesturing eagerly towards that spot.
Of the three men, one was fat and clearly quite drunk. Another was hooded, thin, and looked rather odd. The third was tall and handsome, the most pleasing to the eye of the three, and was sipping his drink and chatting. The two girls found the handsome young man acceptable and didn't object. Gerald, weighing the apparent strength, felt he could handle any trouble and nodded in agreement.
