Su Shenglin's father, on the other hand, became increasingly stern, his imposing presence even without anger, making me hold my breath.
When they saw their grandson, they were so moved that tears welled up in their eyes, and they couldn't put him down, unable to even finish their sentences.
"Old Su, look, he looks exactly like Sheng Lin when he was a child! Oh my, he really looks so much like him!" Madam Su lost her usual composure and even her voice trembled with excitement as she spoke.
The usually stern and imposing Mr. Su also trembled as he stared at the child in Su Shenglin's arms for a long while before nodding: "It does resemble him, but he looks more clever than Shenglin did when he was a child."
Su Shenglin protested, dissatisfied: "You guys are being too biased, it's like you're showing favoritism to your grandchildren."
Madam Su denied it, and stepped forward with a smile, gently coaxing, "Baby, I'm Grandma, can Grandma hold you for a while?"
Kang Kang just returned to China with me, and has met so many strangers these past two days that he's a little overwhelmed.
The little one turned to look at me and whispered, "Mommy..."
Mrs. Su followed the child's gaze and seemed to only then notice me. Her expression paused slightly, and some of her joy faded.
Taking the opportunity, Su Shenglin said, "Mom, why don't you chat with Jiang Wan first, and then play with the child later."
Mrs. Su nodded and gracefully raised her hand to me, "Jiang Wan, we meet again, please sit down."
I smiled politely and nodded slightly to the two elders: "Hello, Mr. Su, hello, Mrs. Su."
"That's too formal. Call me the same way you used to." Madam Su was very polite to me, and her words seemed to be trying to maintain a distance.
But I did not accept it and maintained a proper distance.
After I sat down, Mrs. Su glanced at Kang Kang again before saying to me, "You've been raising the child all by yourself, it must have been tough. As Sheng Lin's parents and the child's grandparents, we don't have much to say in return—this card is just a small token of our appreciation."
Mrs. Su placed an envelope on the coffee table and pushed it in front of me.
I realized what was happening and told them to give me the money.
However, I don't understand the purpose of this money.
Is it to make up for the hardships I endured raising my child?
Or are you going to sell out my relationship with my child?
"Madam, you're too kind. I chose to have this child myself, so I should take full responsibility for everything." I didn't accept the offer and declined politely but firmly.
This is true.
Although I haven't worked much in the past two years, I still have savings and can make a living.
Moreover, I have already started working as a designer again, and my career will gradually pick up again soon.
Raising a child is not difficult for me.
“You take responsibility for your share, and we express ours; there’s no conflict,” Mrs. Su persuaded again. Then, noticing my concern, she explained, “Don’t worry, it’s not like giving you money means you can keep the child. Sheng Lin told us last night that the child will stay with you, and we won’t fight for it.”
I was somewhat surprised and couldn't help but look up at Su Shenglin.
Su Shenglin also happened to look at me and said, "Take it, don't mistreat my son."
"I won't take it, but I won't treat him unfairly."
Mr. Su remained silent until he saw that I refused to accept it, then he spoke authoritatively: "Jiang Wan, this is a token of our affection for the child. You are just keeping it for him. Please accept it."
Using the child as an excuse, I really couldn't refuse.
After thinking for a moment, I had no choice but to agree: "Then I will thank you both on behalf of the child."
"Stay for lunch. I've invited your favorite chef to come and cook."
After saying this, Madam Su got up to pick up Kang Kang. With a gentle shake of her hand, a gleaming gold lock was revealed and hung in front of the child.
It seems they were well-prepared and genuinely liked this grandson.
