Chapter 36 Jealousy
Jiang Cheng stayed behind at the Cloud Recesses, claiming he wanted to discuss some matters concerning the Immortal Sect alliance with Lan Wangji. Wei Wuxian volunteered to accompany him, and from midday onwards, he'd been hanging around Jiang Cheng, asking him about the blossoming lotuses in Yunmeng and reminiscing about their fun fishing adventures back in the day at the Lotus Pier. They were having a great time chatting.
Lan Wangji sat nearby, teacup in hand, his fingertips unconsciously caressing the rim. He watched Wei Wuxian smile as he refilled Jiang Cheng's teapot, watched him pull out a newly painted talisman from his bosom and hand it to Jiang Cheng for "appreciation," and watched the glint in his eyes as he spoke of the past—a glint that belonged only to the vibrant Yunmeng years, a past he had no part in.
Si Zhui happened to see this scene when he returned with the repaired wooden kite. Wei Wuxian was holding a piece of osmanthus cake and half-jokingly offered it to Jiang Cheng: "Try it! You made it yourself, you can't not taste it yourself, right?"
Jiang Cheng frowned and dodged: "Don't touch me." Although his tone was fierce, he didn't really push him away.
The teacup in Lan Wangji's hand hit the table with a gentle "dong". The sound was not loud, but it made the noisy atmosphere quiet for a moment.
Wei Wuxian finally came back to his senses, turned around and saw Lan Wangji's expression, his heart skipped a beat - oh no, it seemed his Han Guang-jun was unhappy.
He quickly withdrew his hand and coughed twice: "Um... Lan Zhan, would you like to try it too? This osmanthus cake is really good."
Lan Wangji didn't look at him, but said calmly, "No need."
Sizhui placed the wooden kite on the table and quietly tugged at Wei Wuxian's sleeve. Wei Wuxian winked at him, signaling him to be quiet. He turned and leaned closer to Lan Wangji, whispering, "What's wrong?"
Lan Wangji turned his head and his eyes fell on the hand that had just touched Jiang Cheng's sleeve. He didn't say anything, but his eyes clearly showed "unhappiness".
Wei Wuxian was both angry and amused. This jealous guy was even jealous of Jiang Cheng. He quietly moved closer to Lan Wangji, nuzzled his arm, and said in a voice only the two of them could hear, "I'll make you Tianzixiao tonight. Just the two of us, okay?"
The tips of Lan Wangji's ears flushed slightly, but his expression remained unchanged.
Jiang Cheng was incredibly astute, having already seen through the clues. He picked up a piece of lotus seed pastry and stuffed it into his mouth, saying slowly, "Since Han Guang-jun and Senior Wei are busy, I'll take my leave. We'll discuss matters concerning the Immortal Sect another day."
“No!” Wei Wuxian hurriedly tried to persuade him to stay. “Please sit for a while. I haven’t told you about Jin Ling’s recent embarrassing incident yet…”
"No need." Jiang Cheng stood up, glanced at Lan Wangji, and a subtle smile appeared on his lips. "Don't let anyone get upset seeing you." He patted Si Zhui's shoulder. "If the wooden kite breaks, send a message to Yunmeng and I'll make you another one."
"Thank you, uncle!" Si Zhui smiled and nodded.
After seeing Jiang Cheng off, Wei Wuxian had just turned around when Lan Wangji grabbed his wrist. Lan Wangji's force wasn't strong, but it carried an irresistible force as he pulled him back to the quiet room.
Si Zhui looked at the backs of the two men and touched his head. He always felt that his father's eyes just now were a little scary, and a little... aggrieved?
In the quiet room, Lan Wangji closed the door before releasing Wei Wuxian's hand. He turned his back to him and said in a muffled voice, "You know him very well."
"Who? Jiang Cheng?" Wei WuXian walked around to him and saw that he was still frowning. He couldn't help but smile, "We grew up together, how could we not be familiar with each other? But don't worry, he and I are just brothers, pure and simple!"
Lan Wangji looked up at him, his eyes dark. “You smiled at him seventeen times.”
“Huh?” Wei WuXian was stunned. “How could I…” He thought about it carefully, and it seemed that it was quite a lot. “It’s been a while since we last saw each other. I was having a good chat, so I laughed a lot.”
He reached out and pinched Lan Wangji's cheek softly: "What? Jealous?"
Lan Wangji didn't say anything, but lowered his eyelids slightly. His long eyelashes cast a small shadow under his eyes, making him look a little pitiful.
Wei Wuxian's heart softened instantly. He stood on tiptoe and pecked Lan Wangji lightly on the lips. "Okay, stop being angry, okay? I promise that from now on, I'll only smile at you, and smile sweeter than anyone else's. Okay?"
Lan Wangji then raised his eyes, the frost in his eyes gradually melting. He reached out and pulled him into his arms, resting his chin on the top of his head, and said in a low voice: "Don't be so nice to others."
“Okay, okay,” Wei WuXian leaned into his arms, his shoulders shaking with laughter. “Apart from you and SiZhui, no one else is good, okay?”
Sunlight streamed in through the bamboo curtains, casting dappled shadows on the ground. Sizhui, holding Mu Yuan, stood at the courtyard gate. Seeing the quiet room door closed, he could faintly hear his father's laughter and his father's low response from within, so he quietly retreated.
Although he didn't quite understand why his father was suddenly unhappy, seeing the two of them reconciling made him feel at ease. It turned out that his father wasn't always so calm and composed. He would also get upset like a child, but his father could always comfort him easily.
As Wei Wuxian often said, love is sweet even when it's noisy. Si Zhui touched the wooden kite in his hand and suddenly felt that the faint jealousy in the quiet room, like the osmanthus cake his uncle brought, was sweet.
