Chapter 38 Whispering Under the Moon

Chapter 38 Whispering Under the Moon

Late at night, Sizhui had already fallen asleep. A single dim candlelight lit the quiet room, casting a shadow of their two figures gently swaying against the wall.

Wei Wuxian curled up in Lan Wangji's arms, his fingers unconsciously tracing the curling cloud pattern on his clothes. Lan Wangji was looking down at an ancient book, his arms tightly wrapped around his waist, as if afraid he would run away.

“Lan Zhan,” Wei Wuxian suddenly looked up and nuzzled his chin. “Will you be unhappy again when we return to Yunmeng tomorrow?”

Lan Wangji turned a page and said in a low voice, "No."

"You're lying," Wei Wuxian said, reaching out to grab his book. "Jiang Cheng only stayed a little longer at noon, and you were so jealous you went back to the Lotus Pier. If I had said a few more words to him, wouldn't you have frozen all the water in Yunmeng?"

The page was pulled out, and Lan Wangji simply closed his eyes, his fingertips gently pinching his waist: "No."

“Then kiss me.” Wei Wuxian leaned forward with a sly smile in his eyes, “Kiss me and I’ll believe it.”

Lan Wangji reluctantly opened his eyes, but he actually lowered his head and pecked him on the lips. As soon as the soft touch landed, Wei Wuxian pressed the back of his neck and deepened the kiss. The candlelight crackled, stretching their intertwined shadows even longer.

After a long moment, Wei WuXian leaned against his chest, panting, his voice muffled, "Actually, Jiang Cheng and I don't have much to talk about. It's just about that kid Jin Ling's embarrassing incident and whether Yunmeng's lotus pods are producing well this year."

He suddenly remembered something, sat up, dragged out a wooden box from under the bed, and took out a small gadget tied with a red string - it was a smooth lotus seed with a crooked "envy" engraved on it.

"Look at this," he shoved something into Lan Wangji's hand. "Jiang Cheng carved this when we were little. He said I always loved stealing lotus pods, so they'd be easier to find if I lost them."

Lan Wangji stroked the seed, and the marks on it felt slightly hot where his fingertips touched.

"Back then I thought he was very fierce, but now I think..." Wei WuXian smiled, "Actually, he's just tough on the outside but soft on the inside. But compared to you, you're still the best."

He leaned over and blew into Lan Wangji's ear: "Han Guang-jun is the best, gentle and considerate. He even buys me Tian Zi Xiao, accompanies me night hunting, and..."

Before he could finish his words, Lan Wangji covered his mouth. He looked at him sullenly, his Adam's apple moving: "Behave yourself."

Wei Wuxian blinked and licked his palm.

Lan Wangji's breathing suddenly became disordered.

At dawn the next day, Si Zhui was awakened by a noise outside the window. He put on a coat and went out, just in time to see Wei Wuxian squatting on the stone steps, tying a small bow on Lan Wangji's headband.

“That’s how it looks.” Wei Wuxian clapped his hands, took two steps back, and looked around. “Let’s go to Yunmeng to eat lotus seeds!”

Lan Wangji raised his hand to untie the bow, but Wei Wuxian held it down, "No! Just leave it on like this, so Jiang Cheng can see that Han Guang-jun has pigtails too."

Si Zhui stood behind the door and laughed secretly. He suddenly felt that his father was right. Although his father looked calm, he was always helpless in front of his father.

As the three of them walked out of the mountain gate, they ran into Lan Jingyi and Jin Ling. Jin Ling saw the bow on Lan Wangji's headband and almost spit out the glutinous rice cake in his mouth.

"Han, Han Guang-jun..."

Lan Wangji glanced at him calmly, and Jin Ling immediately shut up. Wei Wuxian was laughing so hard that he collapsed back and forth, only to be restrained when Lan Wangji quietly pinched his waist.

The gate to the Cloud Recesses slowly opened, and the morning light shone across the stone pavement, stretching the three people's shadows. Si Zhui followed behind, holding his newly repaired wooden kite, and heard Wei Wuxian chattering to Lan Wangji about picking the largest lotus pods in Yunmeng, going to see Jiang Cheng's new spirit dog, and...

"What else?" Lan Wangji's voice was filled with laughter.

“I’ll even sleep in the same room with you tonight.” Wei Wuxian’s voice drifted over the wind, a hint of smug cunningness in it, “Just like last night.”

Si Zhui noticed Lan Wangji's ears turning red, and his pace unconsciously quickened. He lowered his head and touched the wooden kite in his arms, and suddenly felt that returning to Yunmeng seemed like a very interesting thing.
