Chapter 55 Spells
After sending the child back to the apartment, Wei Wuxian just collapsed on the sofa to take a break when he was stopped by Lan Wangji.
"Come here." Lan Wangji sat on the single sofa opposite, his expression a little more serious than usual. "There is something I must make clear."
Wei WuXian raised an eyebrow and sat up straighter. "What's so serious? Is it because Wangji Group's stock price dropped?"
"No." Lan Wangji shook his head, his eyes fixed on the window. "It's about magic." He paused, his tone serious. "From today on, you are not allowed to use magic in front of anyone, including Sizhui and Jingyi."
Wei WuXian was stunned for a moment, then realized: "Are you afraid of being discovered by modern people?"
"Yes." Lan Wangji nodded. "There's no such thing as cultivating immortality in this world. If your magic is exposed, at best you'll be treated as an alien for research. At worst, it could cause panic, or even be judged by the system as 'disturbing the order of the world,' and have your favor points deducted." He looked at Wei Wuxian. "Your Chen Qing, my Bi Chen, and Si Zhui's potentially awakened spiritual power must all be kept hidden."
Wei Wuxian touched Chen Qing in his arms. This flute had been with him for two lifetimes, becoming a part of his body. He felt a little uncomfortable suddenly having to stop using it. But he knew Lan Wangji was right. Modern society values "science," and their "magic" would probably be seen as little more than "supernatural powers" by others.
“I understand.” Wei Wuxian nodded. “I’ll explain this clearly to Sizhui and Jingyi. Especially Jingyi, he’s got a rather unruly personality. I hope he doesn’t let himself use magic at school. That would be troublesome.”
As he was speaking, his cell phone rang. It was a message from Teacher Li, saying that the children were adapting well to the classroom. There was also a photo attached - Si Zhui was sitting quietly in his seat reading a book, while Lan Jingyi was leaning next to him, pointing at the illustrations in the textbook and saying something. The two seemed to be getting along very well.
“It seems alright.” Wei Wuxian smiled and showed the photo to Lan Wangji. “I’ll emphasize this again at the parents’ meeting this afternoon.”
At the parent-teacher meeting in the afternoon, parents arrived one after another. Most of them were wealthy businessmen or executives dressed in exquisite clothes. When they saw Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji, many of them secretly took out their mobile phones to take pictures. A few brave people wanted to come over and ask for autographs, but were politely stopped by Lan Wangji's assistant.
After Teacher Li finished explaining the back-to-school precautions, he set aside some time for free discussion. Wei Wuxian seized the opportunity to find Sizhui and Jingyi, who were chatting with their classmates' parents, and pulled them into a corner of the corridor.
"Daddy?" Si Zhui looked up at him with confusion in his eyes.
Wei Wuxian squatted down, looking the two children in the eye, his tone as solemn as Lan Wangji's, "I have something very important to tell you, especially Jingyi." He glanced around, making sure no one was around before continuing, "From now on, no matter what happens, you are not allowed to use magic in school, and you are not allowed to mention words like cultivation or resentment in front of your classmates. Remember?"
Lan Jingyi looked puzzled: "Why? Didn't you use a talisman to avoid that puppet last time at Junwu Mountain?"
"This isn't Junwu Mountain, nor is it Cloud Recesses," Wei Wuxian explained patiently. "People in this world don't believe in magic. If they saw you using spells or flying swords, they'd think we were monsters. Not only would we be unable to return, we might even be captured."
Sizhui understood, his face full of seriousness: "I understand, Daddy, I won't use it." He touched the wooden kite in his arms, "Even a wooden kite won't make it glow."
Although Lan Jingyi was still a little reluctant, he nodded when he saw Wei Wuxian's serious expression: "Okay, I'll remember it. But what if someone bullies us?"
"Use this." Lan Wangji walked over at some point and handed each of them a small alarm. "Press this if you encounter danger. School security will come immediately, and we will also be notified." He looked at the two children. "Modern times have their own rules. There are more ways to solve problems than just magic."
Lan Jingyi took the alarm, looked at it over and over, and suddenly laughed: "This little gadget is much more convenient than talismans, and you don't need to draw talisman paper."
Wei WuXian couldn't help but knock on his head. "Don't be ridiculous. Just remember this. If you dare to use magic secretly, not only will you have to copy the 'Modern House Rules' when you come back, but you'll also be grounded for a month and not allowed to touch a basketball."
"I know, I know!" Lan Jingyi nodded quickly, fearing that he would really not let him join the basketball team.
When they got home, Wen Ning had already prepared dinner. Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang also came, saying that they wanted to "have a free meal and ask about the children's school start situation."
At the dinner table, Wei Wuxian reiterated the ban on using magic in public. Jiang Cheng snorted, "This should have been done a long time ago. Yesterday, I was in a meeting at the company and I almost used my spiritual power to overturn the desk of the boss who was opposing me. Luckily, I held myself back."
Nie Huaisang waved his folding fan and said with a smile, "I'm smart. I'm in the antique business and occasionally use my weak spiritual power to identify authenticity. Others just think I have good taste."
Lan Qiren put down his chopsticks and added, "Not only the spells, but also the swords and magical instruments must be kept safe. Wangji's Bichen can be disguised as an ordinary ornament, and Wei Ying's Chenqing...it's best not to take it out outside."
Wei Wuxian touched the Chen Qing on his waist and replied, "I understand."
After dinner, Sizhui and Jingyi were doing their homework in the living room. Sizhui wrote quickly and well, but Jingyi was scratching his head at the math problems, muttering, "If I had known that modern homework would be so difficult, I would have been better off memorizing the family rules in the Cloud Recesses..."
Wei WuXian walked over and took a look, then couldn't help but laugh, "This problem is very simple. Just use the distributive property of multiplication... Never mind. You won't understand even if I tell you. I'll teach you."
He picked up the pen and patiently explained to Lan Jingyi, while Lan Wangji sat beside him, helping Sizhui check his Chinese homework. Occasionally, he would look up at the two people playing around, with a faint smile in his eyes.
The living room lights were warm and bright, and outside the window were the lights of thousands of homes. Although it lacked the moonlit bamboo forests of Cloud Recesses, it had a touch more of the warmth of everyday life. Wei Wuxian looked at the scene before him and suddenly felt that even if he couldn't use magic, even if he had to abide by those tedious modern rules, as long as the people around him were there, life like this was fine.
But he didn't expect that this "magic ban" was almost broken by Lan Jingyi just a few days after it was issued - of course, this is a story for later.
