At the age of thirteen, Gu Yuan went to the battlefield for the first time. He repeatedly performed remarkable feats in the heat of battle, and at seventeen, he was promoted to captain of a thousand men. During a major battle, he saved the general's life. The general, impressed by his handsome appearance and agility, was impressed by his talent and continued to promote him.
Finally, when Gu Yuan was twenty years old, our army triumphed over the enemy and returned to the capital. Gu Yuan's bravery and valor led to his commendation at a celebration banquet by the current emperor. However, Gu Yuan never relished such occasions, so he quietly retreated to the small garden to cool off his drunken stupor when he suddenly encountered a heroic woman wielding a longsword.
The woman was dancing with a sword when she suddenly saw Gu Yuan and shouted, "You shameless fellow, who allowed you in?"
Gu Yuan, with a scoundrel-like air, laughed and said, "Is there a sign outside this courtyard that only allows little girls like you to come in, but not heroes like me?"
The woman sneered: "Are you still a hero?"
Gu Yuan raised his head: "The current emperor personally appointed him."
A glint flashed in the woman's eyes. She raised her sword and sneered, "That great hero, do you dare to take a blow from a little woman like me?"
"Why not?"
The two fought back and forth in the courtyard, and finally the woman was defeated and was captured by Gu Yuan. After struggling for a while, she finally sighed helplessly and said, "You military scoundrel, how come you are just like my father said, all strength but no appearance?"
Three years later, Gu Yuan married the general's only daughter Yingniang.
His Majesty has granted the wedding and wishes the two of them a happy and harmonious life.
The couple had a big fat son in the second year, and three sons in five years. By the tenth year, Yingniang refused to have another child, and the ruffian Gu Yuan was helpless, so he had no choice but to teach his six useless sons martial arts.
When Gu Yuan was 30, his father-in-law died in battle. Enthralled by the new emperor, Gu Yuan went to the battlefield armed with a spear, took the enemy's head, and brought it home to his wife, who he embraced and comforted with tenderness as she wept.
When Gu Yuan was fifty years old, he held the power of the three armies and had great influence in the court. His six sons were all brave and good at fighting.
When Gu Yuan was sixty years old, the emperor, who was old and suspicious, summoned him to the deep palace, pretended to hold a banquet, but gave him a bowl of poisoned wine.
Gu Yuan smiled up at the sky and asked, "I don't know what I did wrong!"
The emperor sighed and said, "General Gu, it is precisely because you have done nothing wrong that this is your biggest mistake."
Gu Yuan drank the poisoned wine in one gulp, smashed the bowl, and left. He rode his horse to the general's mansion, but the poison had already taken effect on the way. The horse seemed to have a spirit and kept carrying its master's body back home.
When the gray-haired Yingniang rushed out of the mansion, she saw a strong-willed hero in military uniform sitting upright on his horse with his eyes wide open, staring at home under the cold moonlight.
Yingniang's body was trembling, and her six sons knelt on the ground, vowing to avenge their father.
Yingniang said, "Your father lived a life of valor, worthy of heaven and earth. The late emperor personally selected heroes of the empire, so how could he be implicated by you?"
"Mother!"
"Carry your father down and bring him to my room. I still have a lot to say to him... but haven't had time to."
That day, the lights stayed on all night in the general's mansion. The old lady sat at the head of the bed, stroking her husband's hand and whispering, "Actually, I knew you were Gu Yuan the moment I saw you. My father said he'd found a great match, a brilliant man born to be a general. He hopes I'll marry him, but I hate him."
"If you tell me to marry, I'll marry. I'm a well-known figure in the capital. How can I be like those ordinary girls who only listen to their parents' orders and the matchmaker's words?"
"When you appeared in the courtyard that day, you were also wearing a white military uniform like this."
"You grabbed my hand, and my heart started beating really fast."
"You scoundrel, you want to be a hero even if you die, but you are a hero, but to me... you are just a scoundrel."
…
The old lady's voice continued to echo. As daylight approached, she suddenly drew her sword, walked into the courtyard, and began to dance with it. Her demeanor was as heroic as ever. Time gradually slipped back, as if returning to more than forty years ago. She danced with a sword under the moonlight, while the man secretly watched. They bickered for a while, but eventually, they fell in love.
When the sword fell to the ground, the general's mansion finally hung a white cloth.
The old lady and the old general died on the same day. They really did not seek to live together, but to die together.
The six generals rebelled together, but were eventually suppressed by the emperor who was well prepared, and their entire families were executed.
Many years later, the general's mansion of the once glorious empire has long been deserted, and no one remembers anymore that there was a young man born in poverty who gradually became a great hero of the empire.
Forty-one years ago, the willow trees in Gujia Village sprouted, but Gu Qi and his wife named their child Gu Zhen. He eventually lost everything in business, and even his elderly wife hanged herself, leaving behind only a mentally retarded son.
Forty-one years ago again, this time his name was Gu Cheng. He was a hardworking man, good at farming, and eventually married Gu Shiliu, with whom he lived a happy life.
…
Forty-one years ago, Gu Qi and his wife named their child Gu Niansheng.
Gu Niansheng was exceptionally gifted and handsome. When he was seven, an immortal came to Gujia Village to recruit him as a disciple. The aloof immortal, dressed in a white robe, lowered his gaze and asked softly, "What is your name?"
Gu Niansheng murmured, "My...my name is Gu Niansheng."
The immortal asked, "Why is it Niansheng?"
Gu Niansheng shook his head blankly: "I don't know either."
