Chapter 54
Although last night was a very chaotic night, it's always a joyful thing to reunite.
Continuing along the railway, Michonne trailed Rick by half a head, the two walking in front of them, followed by Beth and Carl, who always seemed to have something to say to each other. Then came Lena, who clung to Daryl, while Mor walked at the back, somewhat speechless.
Is it because his presence is too weak? These two are just walking on the street, but they are like conjoined twins. Lina is clinging to Daryl's arm, and her happy mood shows no trace of her previous dejection.
Although Daryl looked the same as usual, his whole aura had softened. Moore, with his experience of raising Daryl for over ten years, was absolutely thrilled.
No matter how you look at it, Moore felt like he was a victim of injustice. That brat was the most annoying one, and he had to take all the blame when he was at his most erratic. Now that he had met Daryl, the brat's mood had inexplicably improved.
“We’re almost there,” Daryl said softly. Lina looked ahead, and Rick stopped and kicked away the fallen leaves on the metal sign.
Daryl pulled Lena forward. “We’re very close,” Daryl said, looking ahead. “We’ll be there before sunset.”
“Let’s head into the woods now; we haven’t figured out their background yet,” Rick said.
"Okay," everyone agreed. In this world, zombies aren't the scariest thing; humans are.
“Lina,” Rick called softly.
Lena glanced at Daryl, let go of his hand, and walked to Rick's side. Everyone slowly walked forward, with Lena and Rick lagging behind. "You and Beth wait for us outside for a while. We'll come back to pick you up when we're sure everything's alright," Rick said, emphasizing the most important thing first.
“Okay,” Lina didn’t object. First of all, it was impossible not to go in, but Beth was injured and it was inconvenient for her, and Lina didn’t really want to go in and hand over her weapon.
“You’d better be careful. I don’t think they’re good people,” Lina said. “To openly announce their camp and appeal to all survivors is either naive to the point of stupidity or evil beyond your imagination.” Lina warned subtly.
The people at the terminal station were pitiful, but they ceased to be pitiful once they turned their knives on innocent people.
“I know,” Rick nodded. “Thank you for last night,” Rick said.
“You’re welcome. I can’t just stand by and watch,” Lina shrugged. “Don’t call me impulsive,” Lina said, looking at Rick.
“No, of course not,” Rick said helplessly. “I actually thought they could communicate, but obviously they can’t.” Rick shook his head with a wry smile.
"It's all in the past. You should still worry about the terminal station. I think everyone will go there." Lena changed the subject. Joe and his gang were obviously not good people, but the incident started because Rick killed their men. Lena didn't want to judge right or wrong. Everyone just wanted to survive. They threatened Rick, and Rick killed them. It was reasonable.
As they talked, they arrived at the edge of the iron fence, from where they could see the terminal station, but the building was quiet and there was no one in sight.
"Everyone split up, scout out the area, and get a feel for the situation. Be prepared, and don't stray too far," Rick said, looking around.
"Do you want to come with me?" Rick asked Carl, who walked away without turning around. "No need."
Lina quietly mouthed a shushing sound. Poor old father, his son's going through a rebellious phase!
Lina looked at Beth, "Let's go together." She couldn't let Beth wait here. She didn't want Beth out of her sight. She always felt that some heartless person would fall from the sky and steal her little Beth away.
Beth nodded obediently.
Daryl watched as Lina walked away with Beth without saying goodbye, feeling a little annoyed. But he wasn't the clingy type, at least not on the surface, so he could only tell Moore to check other places.
Moor suddenly felt a bit disgusted with Daryl.
"I'm sorry, I can't be of much help," Beth said, looking at her hands with some frustration.
"Don't say that, you've already done a great favor by being here," Lina said, cautiously observing her surroundings, especially the roof inside.
"Do you think it's dangerous here?" Beth asked, looking inside with Lina.
"It's too quiet. It doesn't look like many people live here. Their signs are everywhere." Lina didn't see anyone on the roof. They might be using binoculars or scopes. At this distance, Lina really couldn't see anyone.
"Let's go, we have to go back." After walking around for a while, Lina and Beth headed back. They didn't find anything, but they all felt that this place was very eerie.
“Here you go,” Rick handed the bag containing the weapons to Lina. “If anything seems amiss, you two leave first, and we’ll talk about it later, understand?” Rick stared into Lina’s eyes, his hands gripping the bag straps tightly until Lina reluctantly nodded, at which point he released his grip.
"Be careful," Lina emphasized again as they climbed over the fence and crept inside.
Lina clung to the wire mesh, observing the terrain. It seemed that Carol should have appeared on the other side.
Lina picked up her bag and pulled Beth into the woods.
"What's wrong?" Beth looked at Lina with some confusion. Lina found a tree. "Step on my shoulders and climb up." The leaves were thick, and if Beth quietly hid on it, those people might not be able to find her.
"Why?" Beth asked, puzzled.
“Listen to me,” Lina said without explaining. Those people had already discovered their every move in the woods, and they might send someone to capture the two of them. With Beth Lina, there was no way to fight back.
"Hold the gun," Lina said, tucking the pistol into Beth's belt. "Remember, no matter what they say, don't believe them. Just stay quiet, understand?" Before Beth could say anything, Lina hoisted her up onto her shoulder. Seeing this, Beth had no choice but to climb the tree. Lina stood below and watched. As long as Beth didn't make a sound, no one would see her. Of course, if someone happened to look up, Beth could immediately fire to defend herself.
After settling Beth in, Lina circled the wire mesh and peered inside. Gunshots rang out from the other side. Lina pulled out her rifle and ran towards the direction with the loudest sound.
"Mmm, don't move,"
Lina paused, then turned around. Two men were pointing guns at her. "Where's the other girl?"
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Lina said, glancing around at her surroundings. No, she was a sitting duck.
“We saw you go into the woods and you hid her,” one of the men smiled. “Don’t be afraid, we’re still friendly.”
“Pointing a gun at my friend?” Lina didn’t believe their nonsense.
"That's not the tone of a good kid. Put down your weapons and take us to that girl."
Lina glanced at him, threw her bag at his feet, put down her rifle, and then her knife.
She definitely preferred melee weapons to firearms.
Lena skillfully threw the dagger, but it didn't pierce the man's chest. Instead, he used his gun to block it, but the gun was severed and exploded. The man's hands were covered in blood as he howled in pain. Before they could react, Lena hid behind a tree. She pulled out a pistol. "May the pistol blessed by Rick grant me unlimited bullets!"
Of course, Lina knew that was impossible, and Rick didn't have unlimited bullets.
Only one person was left who could fight, but the opponent's gun was far more powerful than Lina's small pistol.
Lina peeked out but was immediately swatted back. Ugh, so annoying.
However, Lina possessed profound literary knowledge and was well-versed in the art of circling around a pillar, so she wasn't hit for the time being.
Hiding wasn't Lina's style, but within seven steps, a gun was faster. Lina wasn't stubborn; she didn't believe this guy had an endless supply of bullets!
Perhaps because of the constant gunfire in front of her, Lina could no longer hear the gunfire inside the terminal. If the gunfire had stopped inside, they would soon come out to provide support. Lina didn't have time to waste with this man!
"Nothing ventured, nothing gained." When Lina saw the muzzle of the gun, she immediately slashed at it with her knife. Just like before, although it wasn't as easy, the gun was sliced off by the knife in Lina's hand.
The men opposite were dumbfounded. Lina stopped dodging altogether and charged out with her knife to attack.
After watching her head fly off, Lina hugged her knife with a heavy heart. Thank goodness it wasn't cracked.
Although her knife was very sharp, after all, it was a family heirloom, she was still a little worried about using it for such a rough thing. Last time she used it to dig a hole in the wall, it almost gave her a heart attack afterward. She didn't know when the knife would break under the strain.
After dealing with the man, Lina quietly crept back to the edge of the wire mesh. Before the injured man could react, she chopped off his head with a knife, picked up her bag and gun from the ground, and quickly moved away from the area.
At this moment, she was thinking about that RPG again, Damn! Once she got it in Daryl, she definitely had to have a go at it.
As Lina ran, she spotted a familiar figure near the wire mesh. "Carol?"
*
"Ha—" Carol chased after the direction Sophia had run off in, but the forest twisted and turned, making her lose her way. Carol looked at the identical woods in despair, "Sophia! Sophia!"
Aside from startled birds and zombies that came running at the sound, Carol didn't see the person she wanted to see.
Carol reluctantly drew her knife, dealt with the nearby walkers, and then wandered off in a daze, not knowing where to go.
In a daze, she seemed to hear Sophia crying. Carol stopped and listened carefully to the sounds around her.
“Dad! No!” Liz and Mika screamed. Tersey and Herschel, who were standing nearby, picked up stones from the ground. They had run out of bullets and lost their knives, so they had to make do with what they had.
When Carol arrived, she saw a ground littered with walkers, and Liz and Mika were weeping around Ryan.
“Oh no,” Carroll saw bite marks on Ryan’s neck and arms. She walked over to Herschel, whose arm was also injured—a gunshot wound.
“You’re alright, that’s great,” Herschel said, managing a weak smile as she saw Carroll.
"Have you seen Sophia?" Carol grasped Herschel's hand as if clinging to a dying piece of driftwood, desperately trying to hold on.
“No,” Tyrsey shook her head, holding Judith, “Have you seen Sasha?”
Carol shook her head as well. Herschel didn't ask anything, but just looked at Liz and Mika.
Ryan handed the two children over to Carol, who did not refuse. She already had a daughter, and now Sophia's fate was unknown. She... she also needed some comfort. As long as she took good care of the two children, Sophia would be alright, right?
They were very lucky to find a safe cabin with lots of wild walnuts, like a paradise.
Until Liz killed Mika.
It was a nightmare Carol didn't want to recall, which made her begin to doubt herself and her past actions at the storytelling club.
But it's too late for regrets.
Tyrsey held Judith in her arms, while Carol and Herschel took one last look at the little house; this was no paradise.
