Chapter 59
The wind whistled past her ears as Lina chased after the black figure with her knife in hand. Luckily, she wasn't nearsighted. Just as she was thinking this, Lina lost sight of him. Indeed, one shouldn't be too complacent.
Lena stood there, her chest heaving violently. Her sadness and grief had turned into anger, and she wanted to vent it. She wanted to kill those disgusting bugs with her own hands.
"Lina?" Daryl and Rick caught up. Daryl glanced at Lina, then took two steps forward. There was no one else in sight.
"Have you been able to find out where he ran off from?" Lina asked.
“It’s a bit dark,” Daryl said, pursing his lips as he crouched down. “I think it’s over there.” Daryl pointed in a direction, and Rick nodded to him. The three of them followed the clues and went after him.
They arrived at a cemetery, where Daryl shook his head at Rick.
Rick stroked his beard irritably. "Let's go back first."
"They're so close to us, constantly monitoring us. Their camp can't be far away. Are there any buildings nearby?" Lina pondered, remembering it was a school.
“…Someone will find out.” Rick narrowed his eyes.
On the way back, Lina was very unhappy. She didn't want to face Bob's death, and losing every companion caused her immense pain.
Daryl turned his head to look at Lina, lowered one hand, and grasped hers. From the tightly clasped hand came not only warmth, but also strength.
Rick was in a terrible mood. He was fed up with the group of guys who were lurking in the shadows and wanted to hurt his family and his children. This made Rick incredibly angry and regretful that he hadn't taken care of them back then.
The church doors were flung open, and Rick charged straight at Gabriel, startling him so much he nearly fell to the ground. But Rick grabbed him by the collar and lifted him up. "It's all connected. We met you, we were being watched, what's your relationship with them? What have you done?"
No one stopped the furious Rick, because they all distrusted Gabriel.
Lina glanced around. Amy and Moore had returned too...?
Lina nudged Daryl and whispered in his ear, "Are there handprints on Mor's face?" And more than one.
Daryl's gaze searched and found Moore in the corner, looking embarrassed and somewhat angry. He was clearly distracted, staring at Amy and Andrea across from him.
Andrea's face turned ashen, and Amy's face was also flushed with anger.
Daryl hesitated for a moment, then said, “He’s been exposed.” Daryl pointed to Andrea for Lina.
Lina glanced at it and hissed, "Andrea is still so fierce," still so doting on her sister.
Although Daryl didn't know where Lina's assessment came from, he agreed with it. After all, it was Mor who got beaten up. Lina had superhuman strength, but Andrea was just an ordinary woman.
"So will Andrea break them up?" Lina wondered curiously.
“…Who knows?” Daryl said indifferently. Anyway, that guy Moore probably doesn’t know anything. Daryl glanced at Moore and then looked away with disdain.
“Never mind, Amy can find a better one anyway,” Lina shrugged. That’s what she said herself. But then again, did she go looking for another one or two in prison?
Lena looked at Amy suspiciously, then at Moore. No, no, she couldn't let her good cabbage be eaten by a pig. Lena shook her head violently and patted her cheeks to clear her mind.
“I stand with Andrea!” Lina said firmly.
Daryl glanced at Moore hesitantly, "...Whatever."
"And what about you!" Lina stared intently at Daryl, trying to force him to join her team.
“…I’ll go outside to keep watch,” Daryl said, his brow furrowing. He grabbed his bow and was about to run.
Lina grabbed him, "You'd better not run around, be careful of those guys,"
Daryl nodded, as long as he wasn't asked who he would choose.
"So, who do you support?" Lina asked threateningly, narrowing her eyes.
Daryl glanced at his hand that was being held, and after a moment of silence, said, "Whatever you say."
Lena nodded in satisfaction and released Daryl. "I'm going to check on Bob. Call me if you need anything."
Seeing Lina enter the house, Daryl breathed a sigh of relief and relaxed. Daryl went to Mor's side and glanced at the middle of the church, where Gabriel was squatting on the ground, crying his heart out.
"Are you alright?" Daryl asked, leaning against the wall.
“No,” Moore said, not very happy. Compared to the two slaps that followed, he was almost scared to death by Andrea when he was in the middle of his excitement.
How embarrassing!
Although Daryl didn't know what Moore was thinking, he could tell from his gloomy mood that he was really sad (?).
“I will support you no matter what you do,” Daryl silently added in his mind, if it was the right thing to do.
Moore was somewhat surprised. He patted Daryl on the shoulder, touched. But what was Daryl thinking now? Moore wondered.
Lena went into the house, where Sasha was talking to Bob, who was covered in cold sweat and looked very unwell.
“Hey, you’re back?” Bob greeted Lina with a smile.
Lina stood hesitantly by the door, wondering if she had disturbed the two of them.
"I...I'm so sorry..." Lina said, biting her lower lip.
“No, no,” Bob said helplessly, “this isn’t your fault. Maybe it’s fate. I’m always the last one. Now, the gods heard my plea and made me no longer fall behind. They also gave me so much time to say goodbye to my love.” Bob grabbed Sasha’s hand, and Sasha paused as she wiped his sweat. “I don’t want to hear this now.”
Bob chuckled. "Given the current situation, I thought you were going to tease me."
Sasha was a little angry, but mostly sad. "Why didn't you tell me when this happened?"
Bob looked at Sasha. "I know, if I tell you, the point is the result, but I really enjoyed the process."
Sasha could no longer hold back her tears and started crying. Seeing this, Lina quietly went out and closed the door. She leaned against the door, listening quietly to the crying inside and the arguing outside.
Abraham wanted to take Eugene and leave immediately.
Rick strongly objected, arguing that if these people were let off this time, who knew what they might do that he would regret?
“They don’t deserve to live. Since you have the heart to save all of humanity, why can’t you save the people right now?” Lina looked at Abraham in confusion. “If they live, they will keep eating other people. By the time you save humanity, those scumbags might still be alive. Why should they?”
Lena was a little angry. She even wanted to expose Eugene's lies and tell them that DC was not a safe place either, that it was a terrible place! Disgusting!
Abraham looked at Lena, "Our most important task now is to save all of humanity, which means protecting Eugene. I won't let him be in danger. Eugene!"
Eugene, who had been resisting, obediently stood up after being called twice by Abraham.
"Leaving at night is even less safe, isn't it?" Lina complained. "Are you sure about Eugene? A walker? Ogres outside? It's so dark?"
Eugene stopped in his tracks. "I mean, maybe leaving early tomorrow morning would be a good idea."
Rosita rolled her eyes. "They've got someone else in mind, haven't they?" She looked at Carol and then at Rick.
If we're talking about the people they hate the most, these are probably the two people.
Lena gave Eugene a meaningful look. "Maybe they hate us more, but they're indiscriminate eaters. Who knows how many of them there are? If the three of you get caught in an ambush, we'll avenge you. It's a pity... they don't seem to have any professional equipment right now, do they? I wonder how well they handle end-of-life care?"
Eugene plopped down. "I won't leave until tomorrow, no, until this is resolved." He gripped the chair tightly, trembling, as if afraid Abraham would come and carry him away.
After saying this, Eugene glanced at Lina again. Lina didn't understand the meaning behind his gaze. After all, they weren't that in sync yet, and even if they were, she couldn't read minds.
Abraham looked at Eugene helplessly. Rosita walked over and sat down next to Eugene. "We will protect you, you know that."
Eugene nodded nervously. "But, like she said, if we can't even save the people in front of us, how can we save the world? I'll stay here safely until you've dealt with those people." He clung tightly to the chair, knowing Abraham would definitely grab him.
He also knew that if he didn't speak up for Lina, his secret might be exposed. Although he still didn't understand why she was so sure, Eugene wasn't ready to be exposed here right now.
Rosita looked at Abraham, who was silent for a moment. Then he looked at Rick and asked, "After we deal with them, shall we leave?"
Rick nodded.
“Alright,” Abraham said somewhat displeased, “that’s how it will be.”
Rick's plan was simple and effective, and Lena had no reason to question it. They gathered a lot of weapons, blew out the candles in the church, and headed toward the school that Gabriel had mentioned.
The church saw some people leave and welcomed a new group of people.
Gray and his men brazenly stormed into the church. "We know they just left, taking a whole bunch of guns with them. I also know who was there: Bob? Eugene? Rosita? Martin's good friend Talsey? Herschel and his daughter with the severed hand? Amy? Sophia? Dwayne? Carl? and Judith?"
Carl held his gun firmly at the door, while Rosita also stood guard with her gun drawn.
“I don’t know where you are, but this place isn’t big, so stop playing hide-and-seek to avoid unnecessary pain,” Gray said slowly. He waved his hand, and the people behind him rushed into the rooms on both sides, the doorknobs being turned repeatedly.
“I know you’re behind one of the doors, but we have enough firepower to blow both doors down. I know you don’t want that,” Gray shouted.
"What does the pastor think?" Gray cocked his gun and looked around.
“Father, if you help us end all this, we’ll let you go,” Gray said.
Gabriel simply held the cross and prayed incessantly.
“You can leave as soon as you open the door, and you can even take the baby with you,” Gray continued.
What do you think?
The entire church was silent; no one spoke. But the cry of a baby broke the stillness of the night.
"Who knows? Maybe we should keep the child. I'm starting to like this girl." Gray was like a predator locking onto its prey.
"This is your last chance to get out," Gray shouted, somewhat bored. He had been merciful enough to avoid a firefight, but these people were simply ungrateful.
"Finished talking?" Martin looked at Gray speechlessly.
“Blow off the hinges,” Gray said.
However, before his men could make a move, two bullets flew out of the darkness, ending their lives.
"Put the gun on the ground," Rick slowly emerged from the darkness, the muzzle pointed directly at Gray.
Gray tried to resist, "If you shoot, I'll shoot..."
Before he could finish speaking, he was shot in the hand. He cried out in pain, clutching his hand, and the gun fell to the ground.
"Put the gun on the ground and kneel down," Rick said coldly.
“Do as he says,” Gray said painfully. More and more people appeared. He thought his men had surrounded the church, but it turned out that the other side had surrounded them.
“Martin, we have no choice,” Gray said.
“No, we do,” Martin said.
"Want to make a bet?" Abraham raised his gun and approached Martin almost instantly.
They lost, and Martin reluctantly knelt down.
Rick took control of the situation. Gray knelt in the middle of the corridor, with Lena standing behind him, watching him. He was kneeling before the words: "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood will have eternal life."
Unfortunately, immortality is a lie.
The darkness of the night is enough to swallow all the blood and the past.
