Chapter Twenty-Six: Petting a Cat is Impossible

"Let's use wood. We can make bowls, chopsticks, ladles, buckets, and all sorts of things." After thinking it over, Su Tang finally chose wood, which was the most abundant material here.

There was no other way; this was the fastest and simplest way to get food, so at least we wouldn't have to use leaves as bowls today.

Su Tang was a woman of action, so she immediately went to Su Shiwei's place and picked out two suitable large, thick logs to try making wooden bowls.

Whether this method will work or not, we'll have to try it first to find out.

The mother and daughter worked together to first cut the wood into the appropriate size, then shaved off the excess parts on the outside, hollowed out the inside of the bowl, and finally polished the inside and outside of the wooden bowl clean and smooth to prevent it from piercing the mouth.

A wooden bowl the size of a palm is now finished.

Su Tang and Lin Xia were very satisfied, finally they no longer had to use leaves and those two broken stone bowls.

"Tangtang, this wooden bowl is quite nice. Let's make a few more," Lin Xia said excitedly, examining the wooden bowl.

"Yes, and also make some water ladles, wooden basins, wooden buckets, and the like." Su Tang nodded; her family was lacking everything.

Those water containers made of leaves would break in a couple of days; they didn't last long.

It's a good time to make some wooden utensils to replace them.

Just as Su Tang was about to go and get some more wood, she saw several small white figures crawling out of the thatched shed.

They arched and swayed, like several white caterpillars.

Su Tang then remembered that she had a litter of kittens.

She stepped forward, grabbed the kittens by the neck, lifted them up, and prepared to throw them all back into their nest.

But then her gaze shifted to the scruffy face of the kitten in her hand, and she paused for a moment.

The kitten had opened its eyes at some point; its clear, beautiful blue eyes resembled two sparkling sapphires, making it quite stunning.

It didn't struggle when Su Tang grabbed it; its four paws hung down.

She looked back at Su Tang with a blank expression.

The other four kittens also smelled the familiar scent on Su Tang and climbed up on top of each other like a human pyramid, wanting to get close to their mother.

The soft, fluffy texture felt like being enveloped.

Su Tang suddenly felt a ticklish sensation in her heart, and had an urge to take a big gulp.

This cub... seems quite cute.

"Tangtang, what's wrong?" Lin Xia asked, turning around when she saw Tangtang standing motionless in front of the thatched shed.

Hearing her mother's voice, Su Tang finally snapped out of her daze.

What was she thinking just now?

I actually want to pet a cat!

Su Tang was startled and quickly put the kittens down, replying, "It's nothing, the kittens just escaped, I'm just settling them in."

What a joke! How could she possibly be a cat lover!

However, it's not good for kittens to stay in the straw shed all the time. Kittens are different from human kittens; they need to bask in the sun to stay healthy. Otherwise, they are prone to developing ringworm, and they will look even uglier if they go bald.

Thinking of this, Su Tang shook her head violently.

She couldn't accept a bald, ugly cat more than a fluffy one!

Su Tang simply dragged the cat bed outside and placed it next to the wood next to herself, so that the kittens could sunbathe and play outside.

The sun is already out. I don't know what season it is. It's not hot in the middle of the morning. The sun feels warm on my skin.

By midday, the sun becomes scorching.

After taking care of the cubs, Su Tang went to Su Shiwei's place again and brought back a pile of wood to make vessels.

The mother and daughter worked together while looking after the cub, and made a bunch of utensils in just one morning.

Ten wooden bowls and ten wooden plates were made, along with ten pairs of chopsticks, three wooden ladles, two wooden spatulas, and more than a dozen wooden basins and buckets, all of which were polished smooth and not rough to the touch.

The wooden bucket has no handles because neither Su Tang nor Lin Xia knows how to carry it.

At noon, Lin Xia asked Su Guodong to bring back an old tree stump, cleaned all around it, and flattened the top and bottom to use as a cutting board, which was good for chopping vegetables and bones.

The tableware and utensils for the family were finally completed.

"Wife, we have bowls and chopsticks, but where's the pot?" Su Guodong asked curiously while eating an apple at lunchtime.

"How can you make a pot out of wood? The pot will burn before the food is even cooked." Lin Xia rolled her eyes at Su Guodong.

Su Guodong awkwardly touched his nose; his mind hadn't quite caught on yet.

Su Tang looked at her father sympathetically, then handed him an apple, telling him to eat more and talk less to avoid getting scolded.

However, not having a pot isn't a big deal either.

Even if they keep eating barbecue, they still need a pot to boil water for drinking, and they'll need to boil water for bathing when the weather gets cold!

Even if she doesn't wash herself, the cubs can't be left unwashed.

Su Tang herself didn't realize that she now considers the cubs when she thinks about things.

"Mom and Dad, we still need to make a pot. Eating barbecue all the time is too hot and not good for our health," Su Tang said earnestly to the two of them.

Lin Xia nodded in agreement, "But what should we use to make the pot?"

“If we had clay, we could make a ceramic pot,” Su Shiwei, who had been silent until now, suddenly said.

Su Tang's eyes lit up; this was a good idea.

Pottery is lightweight and not as bulky as stoneware. Although it may crack after being fired for a while, as long as there is clay, it is not a problem to replace it every now and then.

"Then I'll go to the river this afternoon and see if there's any clay." Su Tang clapped her hands and made her decision.

Lin Xia and Su Guodong naturally had no objections.

They all listen to their daughter.

After lunch, the group took a nap and then continued working.

The afternoon sun was scorching, so Su Tang moved the cubs back to the thatched shed, entrusted them to Lin Xia's care, and then went to the riverbank to look for clay.

It takes about fifteen minutes to walk from the thatched hut to the riverbank, passing through a small grove of trees.

Su Tang searched along the riverbank, from upstream to downstream, but couldn't find suitable clay.

The riverbank is all rocks and sand.

Su Tang tried digging in several more places, but the soil was either loose or mixed with yellow sand.

The plan to make pottery was abandoned before it even began.

Helpless, Su Tang had no choice but to return home.

"Pottery won't work, it seems I'll have to make a pot out of stone first," Su Tang thought to herself.

However, none of them had experience in polishing stone pots, so they would have to wait for Xiao Fu to come back and ask him.

As Su Tang walked and pondered, she unknowingly found herself in the grove of trees.

The forest was so dense that sunlight couldn't penetrate at all.

Because the family had walked a lot, Su Jianyuan had cleared away the thorns and bushes on the road last night, creating a small path.

As Su Tang was walking back, she suddenly saw a yellowish-brown object in the distance along the path.

It stands out particularly in this lush green forest.

"What is that? Is there a wild animal?"

Su Tang muttered to herself, not daring to approach rashly.

After observing for a while, I realized that the thing didn't seem to be moving, so I carefully picked up a stick and went closer to examine it.

As she got closer, she finally saw what was lying on the ground.

"This is... a sika deer?"
