Chapter 114 Highway Intersection
At approximately 11 p.m., the two trucks stopped on an empty road.
After removing the sensor lights from the back of Lin Xi's truck, everyone got into Lin Xi's truck.
The car has been modified so that the front driver's cab and the rear passenger compartment are connected.
The supplies in the carriage were neatly stacked in cardboard boxes, and Lin Xi had marked the contents of the supplies with a marker.
There are 4 barrels of spare gasoline, 20 boxes of water, 10 boxes of bread, 10 boxes of compressed biscuits, 10 boxes of instant noodles, 10 boxes of canned food, and 2 boxes of chocolate.
Two boxes of hygiene products each.
Two sets of clothes for each of the four seasons.
Temporary battery storage boxes and small photovoltaic chargers.
Next to the first aid kit was a health supplement box containing protein powder and vitamins.
There were three baseball bats, ten daggers, and also axes and hammers.
A 0.8-meter-long single bed was welded onto the roof, with simple bedding and a sleeping bag. There was even a portable toilet in the vehicle.
Lin Xi: "Based on my previous experience, I have prepared everything I need, with food being the main focus."
Because the area was filled with supplies, only a single-person passage was left in the middle, and everyone stood in a row.
Xiang Xin, who was the last to board the car, said from the spot furthest from Lin Xi, "Sister Xi, I'd like to ride in your car!"
Lin Xi's vehicle not only has a large stockpile of supplies, but also some corresponding living facilities, making it somewhat like a motorhome filled with supplies.
Liang Hui said in a low voice, "If Lin Xi hadn't crushed the zombies like she did just now, I would have wanted to sit here too."
Lu Wei: "..."
Liang Hui: "I will not abandon Brother Lu."
Xiang Xin wanted to argue with him, but considering they were teammates, she could only mutter under her breath, "Nobody asked you to stay here."
Lin Xi took out four loaves of bread and canned food from the supplies and distributed them to everyone. The four of them squeezed into the driver's cab to eat and replenish their energy.
Xiang Xin: "Thank you for your gift, Sister Xi."
Liang Hui: "Girls are indeed more thoughtful."
Lu Wei sensed the underlying meaning and glanced at him indifferently.
Two trucks were parked on the side of the road. The road was open on both sides, far from residential areas and with few zombies, so the trucks could park there and rest for the night.
However, because of the tension and rush of emotions, everyone couldn't fall asleep for a while, so they chatted briefly in the car.
Lu Wei looked at the backpack near the driver's seat: "What's inside?"
Lin Xi: "Emergency escape kit. If you encounter an emergency and can't save the car, take the hiking backpack and escape."
Lu Wei: "You seem to have many backup plans."
Lin Xi: "This is the last one."
She suggested, "Everyone should pack an emergency escape kit, mainly containing chocolate, compressed biscuits, iodine, and bandages."
Although supplies are plentiful now, in case of an emergency requiring us to abandon the vehicle and escape, we won't be caught off guard.
After finishing their late-night snack, Lu Wei and Liang Hui went to another car. The four of them took turns resting, with one person keeping watch every two hours to ensure safety.
At eight o'clock in the morning, the two cars set off at the same time.
The relevant authorities have set up several temporary shelters in Nanhua, which are basically converted prisons.
To keep prisoners in, the prison walls and gates are built very high, which can keep out both people and zombies.
Nanhua is filled with high-rise buildings, and the population density is too high. Several shelters are almost at their limit just by receiving refugees who have not been able to return home.
Lin Xi didn't plan to go to these shelters to join the fun; they had supplies for the time being.
However, considering the risks of encountering Yue Mingyuan's subordinates, they did not intend to join the nearby shelter as an armed force.
Their decision was to settle in a neighboring city and clear out any zombies they could along the way.
However, the car was stuck in traffic before it even reached the highway entrance. The toll station was lined with vehicles stretching for 100 meters in front and behind, and these vehicles were all crooked and twisted, with many vehicles going in the wrong direction sandwiched in between.
Lin Xi got out of the car with the axe and met up with Lu Weiliang and Hui.
The heavy axe looked far more primitive and brutal than a baseball bat. They killed several zombies wandering outside and searched for a possible way out.
As Lin Xi drove through the traffic, she fought off the urge to vomit the entire way.
From a distance, it looks like a cluster of cars, but upon closer inspection, the car windows are covered in bloodstains—blackened handprints left by the zombies outside.
Some car windows were shattered, with rotting arms hanging from the windows.
Some car windows were intact, and the privacy film was quite dark, so the people inside escaped the zombie attacks, but starved to death because they were too afraid to get out of the car to escape.
In the sweltering heat of summer, with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius every day, what Lin Xi saw were—
They are all giants, swollen and rotting.
Blackish-green bodily fluids seeped continuously from the gaps in the car door, emitting a stench that sent chills down one's spine.
Although she had lived in the apocalypse for a long time, this was the first time she had seen such a scene. She even gagged and forced herself to check for danger one by one despite her discomfort.
Lin Xi seemed to be able to recall the tragic scenes here:
When the zombie outbreak occurred, many people tried to flee the city with their families, only to find that the tollbooth was blocked and zombies appeared in front of them. In desperation, they ran against the flow of traffic and ended up colliding with unsuspecting vehicles behind them.
Caught between a rock and a hard place, some abandoned their cars and ran away, only to become food for the zombies or add to their ranks. Others hid in their cars, too afraid to go out, and eventually starved to death in their seats, or were dragged out by having their windows broken.
The ground was covered with dried blood; after the tragedy, only zombies remained.
However, toll booths are usually located in open areas. After the tragedy occurred there, most of the zombies lost their target and slowly wandered away, leaving only a few behind.
Xiang Xin stayed in the car, observing the footage from the drone, and broadcasted the location to her teammates: "There are zombies in the red vehicle to the left rear."
"There's a zombie stuck between the three cars on the right—the blue one, the black one, and the white one—and it can't get out."
"There are zombies approaching Liang Hui from the right."
Liang Hui glanced around and said in a low voice, "I don't see it."
Xiang Xin: "It has no legs, it's very short, and it was hidden by the vehicle, so it crawled out from under the car!"
About half an hour later, the three of them cleared away the scattered zombies near the toll booth.
Lin Xi vomited up her breakfast before getting into the car.
Xiang Xin patted her shoulder and comforted her, "You can use the solar charging panel to charge the tablet during the day. I downloaded some horror movies and hardcore videos for you. Take some time to broaden your horizons?"
Lin Xi: "..."
Surviving the apocalypse is far more difficult than imagined.
The highway entrance was completely blocked. These cars couldn't pass through without being cleared. Other entrances were probably in a similar situation. Since we couldn't leave for the time being, we had to turn back and try to leave through some side roads.
