Chapter 24: Died Yet Again
Lin Xi quickly mentally rehearsed how to deal with a stronger and more numerous enemy.
Baseball bats are easy to snatch, and knives aren't very intimidating, so a kitchen knife is the most reliable option.
She leaned against the wall against the doorway, holding a kitchen knife. Her clothes were soaked with sweat from the fright and the commotion she had just done, but she didn't have time to worry about that now.
Lin Xi focused intently on listening to the sounds outside the door.
The two people outside walked up to the third floor, marveling at the sheer number of supplies: "There are so many supplies!"
"You know, this little girl is like she knows the end of the world is coming, her family is so well prepared."
Lin Xi thought to himself:
I knew the end of the world was coming, but I had no idea you guys were coming too!
I wanted to cry but couldn't.
There was a commotion outside as people rummaged through drawers and cupboards: "Hey! There's so much meat in the fridge."
"There's still plenty of food here. We can't possibly eat it all."
The living room and another room were stocked with rice and most of the food, while Lin Xi's own room, which she usually lived in, was not full and was mostly filled with snacks and drinks.
As Lin Xi heard the footsteps getting closer to her room, her nerves tightened, and her heart pounded in her throat.
She swallowed hard, trying to steady her trembling hands as she gripped the cleaver.
"Thump!" The door was knocked loudly.
Despite being prepared, Lin Xi was still startled and almost dropped the kitchen knife in her hand.
"Lin Daiyu~" A greasy male voice came from outside the door.
"..." Lin Xi's tense nerves suddenly relaxed, and the sound of "Lin Meimei" almost made her laugh out loud.
But she dared not laugh, for her current situation was even more dangerous than the water shortage she faced in her previous life.
"I know you're home. Come out, we won't hurt you." The voice outside the door was greasy, but it wasn't as deep as the ruthless boss's voice; it must have been the young son's voice.
Lin Xi certainly didn't believe this, but she didn't dare to refute it.
"My dear Lin sister, open the door. Come out, and let's have a good chat." The young man spoke in a relaxed tone, even whistling.
The burly, arrogant, and unscrupulous shop owner shouted from afar, "Why bother with her? Eat your food first, then smash the door down!"
Upon hearing this, the young man at the door gave up on arguing and simply turned around to get something to eat.
Through the door, Lin Xi could hear the two people making loud, gurgling noises like pigs shoveling rice as they ate. Judging from the distance of the sounds, she could tell that the two were eating at the dining table in the living room.
Lin Xi took a deep breath and quickly made her choice.
It is now known that these two burly men broke into her home, and their intention to seize supplies and attack her is quite clear.
The room door was locked, which could hold them off for a while, but as the unscrupulous shopkeeper said, the door was a wooden door. If they weren't afraid of making noise and attracting zombies to break down the door, Lin Xi would still be at their mercy.
By the time the door was broken down and they fought back, they were already at a psychological disadvantage.
Although Lin Xi was timid, she knew that if she went all out and fought to the death, she could still fight for her life. If she didn't fight now, humiliation and death would only be a matter of time.
She had never killed anyone, but this was no longer the peaceful society of the past. Everyone was free from constraints, and in order to protect herself, she had to get through this ordeal.
Lin Xi made up her mind. While secretly unlocking the door, she listened to the sounds outside to make sure they were eating and hadn't noticed her movements.
The darkness and the sound of heavy rain provided cover for her.
She successfully tiptoed out of the room. She knew the layout of the living room all too well; two big steps through this passage would take her to the dining table.
Hearing the commotion outside, the man was still stuffing himself with food.
Lin Xi closed his eyes. Success or failure hinged on this moment; he had to earn a way to survive!
She gripped the cleaver tightly, leaped forward with lightning speed, and unleashed a barrage of attacks on the figure beside the table.
The other person, though caught off guard, quickly reacted and immediately reached out to attack her.
But Lin Xi, with a kitchen knife in hand, swung it and forced the man back.
She didn't have time to see who she was facing; all she knew were that these were two people plotting against her, and she aimed a blow at the vital points of the blurry black figure.
She felt her face was wet, but she didn't know if it was sweat or something else.
The two dark figures in front of her slowly collapsed, and a fat hand grabbed Lin Xi's ankle. Lin Xi took a big step back in fear and disgust.
She was extremely grateful that it was nighttime and there was no way to turn on the lights, so she couldn't see the mess on the ground and wouldn't dwell on what she had just done.
In the struggle for survival resources, the final outcome will inevitably be a life-or-death struggle, especially when the other side has an overwhelming advantage.
Lin Xi was slightly relieved that she had escaped a disaster, but she was also troubled about what to do with the two on the ground.
She couldn't very well carry them upstairs and send them back the way they came, but opening the door and throwing them out was too risky, and besides, it was still a problem how someone of average strength could possibly drag them.
Just like the choice of survival, it's either live or lie down and wait to die. Dispose of them or wait for them to rot and stink.
Lin Xi finally decided to take advantage of the noise cover provided by the rainy night to throw them out.
She moved the furniture blocking the doorway and only opened the door after checking the security camera on the door lock to make sure it was safe outside. She then slowly moved the person out.
The air was thick with the smell of blood, which made Lin Xi very uneasy. She had just moved everyone out of the house when she heard noises coming from downstairs.
At this moment, it was dangerous whether there were people or zombies downstairs. Lin Xi quickly went home and closed the door. Through the surveillance camera on the door lock, she saw two zombies wriggling upstairs and lying down next to the corpse.
They were probably attracted by the fresh blood.
After turning off the electronic screen, Lin Xi quietly moved the furniture back to block the doorway.
Then, in a moment of luxury, he opened a bottle of mineral water and gulped it down, trying to swallow his fear as well.
She then realized that she had narrowly escaped death twice that night.
After finishing her drink and calming down, Lin Xi began to clean up the mess. First, she cleaned up the stains on the floor, then took off her blood-stained clothes and threw them out the window; otherwise, she couldn't stand the disgusting smell for even a second longer.
Then, carrying a baseball bat and a kitchen knife, he returned to the attic to clean up the mess. As expected, many of the upstairs windows were smashed, and the glass in the sunroom roof had two large holes. At that moment, rainwater was falling through the holes, soaking the ground.
These two large holes connect directly to her home, making her feel very unsafe.
However, there was no spare glass roof in the house, so the two large holes had to be left empty.
Lin Xi could only console herself: not many bad people would happen to discover her house like those two people just now, and risk entering through the roof.
After all, doing so would not only require running through hordes of zombies to reach her building, but also risk falling off the building by accident. Not many people have the courage or ability to do that.
After washing away the sweat and grime, she locked herself in her room and couldn't fall asleep for a long time. Her tense nerves and panicked feelings hadn't subsided.
I managed to doze off for a while as dawn broke.
Lin Xi didn't sleep well and woke up before eight o'clock. The heavy rain had stopped, and sunlight shone on the curtains, warming her mood.
The vitality gradually returned to the body.
Lin Xi opened the door to welcome the new students and first made herself breakfast.
Just as she was figuring out what to do and opening the door, she suddenly cried out—
A male zombie was standing at the door. Judging from his familiar clothes and figure, he looked like his neighbor, Fu Minjun. Fu Minjun turned his head and glanced at Lin Xi with his bloodshot eyes, which sent chills down one's spine.
Lin Xi quickly closed the door, but it was too late. "Fu Minjun" squeezed in, lunging at her with his black and green fingernails outstretched.
"Fu Minjun" must have come in through the hole in the sunroom!
It was too late to realize this, as neither the baseball bat nor the kitchen knife were at hand, because Lin Xi never expected to be greeted by zombies as soon as she opened the door.
As the gaping maw approached her, Lin Xi retreated to the bedside and grabbed a pillow, thrashing about wildly. Unfortunately, the zombie bit her, and its slightly rotting hand gripped her arm.
It's that time of year again.
