Chapter 22 Such a big tree, the old lady even refused...
The old lady refused Gu Sheng's help for such a big tree, and pruned it herself, then planted it in the yard overnight.
Gu Sheng was surprised when he saw it early in the morning.
The old lady looked at the crabapple tree with a longing in her eyes and said, "When spring comes next year, we will be able to see the tree full of crabapple blossoms."
Gu Sheng said, "Then I'll have to look forward to it."
After the old lady left, Gu Sheng closed the door, took the cookies and went to the living room, where he started eating the cookies while playing on his phone.
However, he had only been sitting down for a short while when the knocking sounded again.
Gu Sheng thought it was still the old lady, so he ran to the door and opened it. But when he was about to ask, "Is there anything else?" he froze.
Instead of a friendly old lady, a tall man with a gloomy face appeared before him.
The man leaned against the door frame, looking down at Gu Sheng, exuding an oppressive aura.
Gu Sheng was about to close the door without thinking, but the man stopped her.
The man's first words were: "Long time no see, Gu Sheng."
Gu Sheng only wanted to say one thing: "Excuse me, who are you?" He also mentally cursed the unreliable system. A long-lost acquaintance? It could only be a problem with the system.
What new identity has he acquired?
The man clicked his tongue and said, "I admit we had a little disagreement, but now is not the time to talk about that. Someone is waiting for you to save them."
Gu Sheng replied almost instantly: "I can't save him."
More than saving people, he needs someone to save him. He's just an ordinary person, so don't bother looking for him.
The man narrowed his eyes, looking at Gu Sheng. Just as Gu Sheng thought he was about to do something and was ready to retaliate, the man looked to the side and said in an awkward tone, "I'm sorry."
Gu Sheng was stunned for a moment, then said "Huh?" but he didn't hear what the man said.
The man irritably rubbed his hair, then, as if he had made up his mind, he said loudly, "I, Su Yin, the greatest detective in the world, and Gu Sheng, a detective who is slightly greater than me," he said, gesturing with his hands, Gu Sheng felt his two fingers touch, "I want to say sorry for what I said on the cruise ship."
His voice was loud, and Gu Sheng couldn't help but take a step back. He said, "I'm not a detective. You've got the wrong person. Goodbye." He then turned to close the door.
Su Yin braced her foot against the door and said, "I really have something very important that I need your help with, otherwise I wouldn't have come to you."
Perhaps because Su Yin's voice was too loud, even the old lady next door heard it. She opened the window and looked at Gu Sheng with concern.
After seeing this, Gu Sheng smiled at the old lady and indicated that it was nothing.
The old lady stood by the window for a while, seemingly confirming that Gu Sheng was not in immediate danger, before leaving the window.
Su Yin glanced at Gu Sheng, then at the old lady.
After the old lady left, Gu Sheng's gaze shifted to the newly planted crabapple tree on the side.
Su Yin also looked at the tree, just like Gu Sheng.
Then he seemed to realize something and said in a confident tone, "You're testing me."
Gu Sheng was completely bewildered. When did he start testing Su Yin?
Before Gu Sheng could say anything, Su Yin spoke up: "There was something wrong with that old man just now."
Upon hearing this, Gu Sheng frowned instantly. How could he not know who the old lady next door was? She was an angel, for goodness' sake!
Su Yin's voice was loud, and Gu Sheng didn't want the old lady to hear him, so he reached out and pulled him into the house, then closed the door.
Gu Sheng had just uttered a single word: "You..."
Su Yin silenced him with just one sentence.
Su Yin said, "Yes, that old woman killed her husband."
Gu Sheng's mind was filled with only one question: "Huh?"
Su Yin entered the house as if he were in his own home. He sat down on the sofa naturally, looking around as he said, "Actually, it's quite obvious. You can tell at a glance."
Gu Sheng's heart tightened, and he looked at Su Yin with a gloomy expression.
Is it obvious?
Su Yin continued, "When I passed by her house just now, I saw that the mailbox at the door was full of financial magazines, as well as some letters marked 'Top Secret' and 'Do Not Open'."
"That old woman's husband must be a trader, and a very skilled one at that, with a lot of inside information. Although I've never met him, I can probably guess who a skilled trader of that age is."
"Of course, his identity is not important. What is important is that such a person would not let those letters pile up in the mailbox, so something must have happened to him."
"So who killed him, and why?"
“It’s very simple. First of all, on the way here I heard people talking about ‘that strange old man’. According to what they said, the old man stays at home all day and almost no one has ever seen him go out.”
"If you want to kill an old man who doesn't like to go out, you have to sneak into his house. If that's the case, the old lady wouldn't have escaped either, so it couldn't have been an outsider."
As he spoke, he looked at the new axe that Gu Sheng hadn't yet put away.
Su Yin continued, "I ran into that old lady when I was looking for directions. She must have just come back from shopping, because she was carrying a lot of things. I saw that her exposed wrist was wrapped with bandages, and there were old wounds that were not covered by the bandages. Those wounds were caused by burning with cigarette butts."
"Despite the weather, she was wearing long sleeves and trousers, with a scarf around her neck, and a newly cut fringe on her forehead. That fringe was a bit too trendy for her age and didn't match her understated attire."
“I bet there are a lot of injuries in the areas she’s covering up, and there must be some fresh wounds on her forehead.”
"She has been suffering from domestic violence for a long time."
“A woman who has been subjected to domestic violence for a long time will not develop a sense of resistance, so it must have been an accident, perhaps an unintentional action, or perhaps she did nothing at all. At this age, it is normal to have some underlying health conditions. She may have simply chosen not to help.”
"However, if it were the latter, she would definitely call for an ambulance to prove her innocence and that she did nothing, so it must be the former."
Gu Sheng stared blankly at Su Yin, muttering to himself as he thought about something.
Su Yin continued, "To expand on this further, after all this happened, there was a corpse on the ground, and blood everywhere. She must have felt fear, terror, and joy. She was free."
"After that, she needed to clean up the trash on the ground because she didn't want to go to jail for the body."
Su Yin looked at the newly planted tree outside the window: "A newly planted tree is a good place to bury things," he shook his head, "Why choose such a big one? Are you trying to mislead the sheriff? How naive."
"Bleach. I saw some bleach boxes piled up in front of her house. She must have done some research, but buying so much at once is too careless, and her search history will also expose her."
Su Yin concluded: "It won't be long before the sheriff comes looking for her."
He looked at the axe and said, "You lent her the axe? Aren't you afraid of getting involved? She might frame you."
Gu Sheng thought silently, "The old lady next door would never do such a thing."
He picked up the axe, opened the tool shed door, and put the axe inside.
Su Yin craned his neck to watch Gu Sheng's movements, and with his sharp eyes, he noticed that there was dirt on the shovel in the tool shed.
Su Yin asked, "You helped her?"
Gu Sheng glanced at Su Yin, closed the door to the tool shed, and said, "I just saw the body of a stray dog by the roadside, felt sorry for it, so I buried it."
Su Yin accepted Gu Sheng's explanation because, "That's true. If you were here, we wouldn't have left so many loopholes."
Gu Sheng looked at Su Yin and said, "Are you done?"
Su Yin raised his head and said, "How was it? Did I pass the trial?"
Gu Sheng walked to the door, opened it, and said, "Come here for a moment, I have something to tell you."
Su Yin, unsuspecting, walked to Gu Sheng's side and asked, "Is there anything else?"
Gu Sheng led Su Yin outside the door, and before Su Yin could react, he slipped back into the room and closed the door.
Su Yin opened her eyes wide and then began to knock on the door: "I passed the test, you can't do this, open the door, I need to talk to you, it's really urgent."
Gu Sheng sensed that Su Yin wasn't in a hurry, since he still had time to leisurely observe the elderly neighbor.
Gu Sheng said through the door, "I can't help you. You've got the wrong person. Go away." Then he dialed the security guard's number.
If an outsider enters here, he will be accompanied by security guards. However, Su Yin said that he ran into the old lady next door when he was looking for the way, so he must have sneaked in.
All we need to do is ask security to kick him out.
Just as Gu Sheng was about to dial the number, he heard a noise outside, followed by Su Yin's crying voice: "Are you going to abandon me after starting this relationship?"
Gu Sheng looked out through the peephole and saw that Su Yin was kneeling on the ground.
He shouted, "I know you don't want it anymore, and I won't bother you anymore. I just hope I can see you one last time."
Gu Sheng put down the phone because he saw his elderly neighbor coming this way, and passersby also stopped and started pointing and whispering.
Gu Sheng took a deep breath and opened the door to pull the person in.
Don't embarrass yourself in front of him, okay?
However, when Su Yin saw Gu Sheng open the door, he actually stood up and took two steps back to avoid Gu Sheng's hand. He glanced at the time and said, "Alright, that's enough playing around. Time's up."
Gu Sheng just wanted to say: Who wants to play with you?
However, Gu Sheng didn't say it aloud because he heard a huge noise coming from the sky, accompanied by a strong wind.
Gu Sheng looked up and saw a helicopter hovering on the roof of his house.
A rope ladder was lowered from the plane.
Su Yin grabbed Gu Sheng and tried to take him onto the helicopter.
Gu Sheng was about to speak: "What are you going to do..." before he could finish speaking, a loud shout came from afar.
"Whose helicopter is this? Who are you people?"
They were patrolling security guards. Gu Sheng wasn't sure if they had arrived at the right time. He was curious whether the guards would believe him if he said the helicopter had nothing to do with him.
While Gu Sheng was looking at the security guard, Su Yin pulled Gu Sheng onto the rope ladder. Gu Sheng instinctively gripped the ladder steps, and then he found himself suspended in mid-air. The helicopter was taking off, and he gripped even tighter.
Seeing the security guard running towards him from a distance, Gu Sheng said, "The door, the door isn't closed." His door was still open.
The elderly neighbor looked on with a puzzled expression as Gu Sheng rose further and further away from the ground. She didn't know what Gu Sheng was doing, but she heard what Gu Sheng said. The old lady waved her hand to reassure Gu Sheng that she would keep an eye on his door.
In the end, Gu Sheng boarded the helicopter; after all, he couldn't stay hanging outside forever.
Gu Sheng, who had been dragged up here, was furious. But since he was already here, he decided to listen to what Su Yin was up to before deciding how to deal with him.
Su Yin finally had the opportunity to explain his purpose.
