I got back to the courier station at 11 p.m.
I took a shower in the bathroom, then went back to bed and lit a cigarette in silence. I felt quite melancholy for a moment.
I had a feeling that An Lili was deliberately getting close to me. Could it be that she really liked me?
Otherwise, why would they bring me breakfast and take me to a buffet?
But that doesn't make sense. I have no education, no money, and I'm blind in one eye. Apart from being reasonably good-looking, I have no redeeming qualities.
With An Lili's figure and looks, she could easily find a civil servant or a handsome, well-off guy. She shouldn't like me, right?
Does she have some ulterior motive for approaching me?
But as soon as the thought popped into my head, I quickly put it out, and also put out the cigarette in my hand.
Perhaps I'm overthinking it; An Lili just sees me as an ordinary friend.
I shook my head, clearing away the jumbled thoughts in my mind, and turned off the light to go to sleep.
I closed my eyes and soon fell into a deep sleep.
In my daze, I heard a knock on the door.
"Who is it?" I called out towards the door.
"Your name is Zuo Changming, right? My new neighbor." A weathered middle-aged voice came from outside.
New neighbors?
I don't seem to remember having any neighbors.
"You've come to the wrong place. I don't have any neighbors." I was full of doubt, as I had no recollection of them at all.
“That’s right, I’ve been here for many years. You may not have seen me, but I have seen you and even tasted your blood.” The weathered voice outside paused, then continued, “Open the door first, may I come in and sit for a while?”
"What?" I exclaimed in surprise, "Uncle, are you sure you didn't misspoke? What do you mean by my blood?"
"Hehe, it's your blood. It's delicious and tempting. I've never tasted anything so good before." The weathered voice continued, as if there was still a sense of wanting more.
"Who are you? I don't think I know you."
"Hehe, we're good neighbors. Didn't we meet that night?"
I don't know what you're talking about?
"Zuo Changming, I live in the small house over there by the wall. Open the door and let me in to talk to you," the weathered voice said.
"What? You...you are who...Fang Lei?"
"Hehe, it seems you know me. Open the door and let me in to talk to you."
"No, go away, I don't know you."
"Knock knock knock!" The knocking sound came from outside again.
"Open the door and let me in," the weathered voice said, tinged with anger.
"No, please stop knocking. I won't open the door."
"Hehe, since you won't open the door, I'll just have to go in myself."
A weathered voice sounded, and a moment later I heard the door open with a creak!
"Don't come in, don't come in..."
"Hehe, I'm already in."
"No, don't come any closer. I know a very powerful mage. You'd better not come over, or I'll get him and kill you."
"A mage? Heh, let him come."
"Don't force me."
"Haha, three more days, remember, three more days, you're mine, you're mine, haha... It's so delicious, I really want to eat it."
"No, no..."
I sat up abruptly in bed, panting heavily. It was already daylight, and everything in the room came into view.
"Damn it, it was just a dream." I breathed a long sigh of relief, muttered to myself, and wiped the cold sweat from my forehead.
I checked my watch; it was already 6:20 a.m.
I took out a cigarette, lit it, and took a deep drag. Thank goodness it was just a dream; it felt so damn real.
As I smoked, recalling my dream from last night, my phone rang. I picked it up and saw it was An Lili calling.
I answered the phone, "Hello, Lili."
"Brother Changming, I'm buying breakfast. What would you like to eat?"
I wanted to tell her I wasn't going to eat anymore, but I swallowed the words back. So I said, "Lili, thank you. Could you bring me some rice noodle rolls? I'll transfer the money to you later."
"Okay, I got it. You don't need to transfer any money to me, or I'll get mad at you." An Lili said and quickly hung up the phone.
I listened to the busy tone on the phone, smiled and shook my head, washed up, ate breakfast, and then went to clock in for work.
I grabbed my toothbrush and towel, opened the door, and rushed out. But after only two steps, I tripped over something and almost fell. When I looked back, I saw it was a worn-out leather shoe.
"Damn it, what bad luck." I cursed under my breath and kicked my tattered leather shoe away. I don't know which bastard threw all that trash in front of my room.
After washing up, I straightened my clothes and was about to go out when I saw An Lili already standing at the door.
"Good morning, Lili," I greeted politely.
"Changming, here's your breakfast." An Lili handed me the breakfast, then looked me over a few times before suddenly asking, "Changming, why do you look so pale? You have such dark circles under your eyes. Didn't you sleep well last night?"
"Um..." I was going to say there were too many mosquitoes, but I've used that excuse so many times that I felt like it was nonsense. So I said, "I had a nightmare last night and didn't sleep well all night."
"What dream?" An Lili suddenly leaned closer and asked with a curious look.
"Nothing?" I waved my hand. Since it was just a dream, I decided not to talk about it.
"Never mind, I'm going to work now." An Lili said, then turned and left for work.
I put breakfast on the table, sat down, and began to enjoy it.
This is the fourth time Anlili has brought me breakfast. For some reason, it feels so good. The sweet and delicious rice noodle rolls not only warm my stomach, but also my heart.
What are you thinking about?
"Smack!"
I slapped myself and threw away this unrealistic fantasy.
After finishing breakfast and cleaning up the trash, I headed towards the courier station.
When I arrived at the entrance of the express delivery station, I saw Zhong Lingui and Lin Xiaoxue had also arrived.
"Good morning," Lin Xiaoxue said to me.
"Good morning, Brother Zhong and Sister-in-law." I greeted them with a smile. Seeing them appear together, I knew the answer to some things without even asking.
"Changming, thank you." Zhong Lingui looked at me and said sincerely.
"You're being too polite. I didn't do anything." I quickly waved my hand, afraid that Lin Xiaoxue would feel embarrassed, and changed the subject, "How's Xiaohui?"
"He's much better now, and he's not having any more episodes. He's with his grandmother right now," Zhong Lingui said softly, her face filled with gratitude.
"That's good. Let's go to work." I saw Lin Xiaoxue standing there looking a little embarrassed, so I patted Zhong Lingui on the shoulder and turned to walk into the courier station.
