early morning.
I was awakened by the crowing of a rooster. I groggily opened my eyes and pinched my thigh.
"Ouch, that hurts!"
"I'm still alive! Haha, I'm still alive!"
I tried hard to recall what happened last night, muttering to myself, "Could all of this have been a dream? There are no unclean things in this world. Grandpa has been dead for over ten years, how could he possibly be talking to me?"
I shook my slightly dizzy head, took out a cigarette, lit it, and quietly smoked it.
After finishing my cigarette, I got up to brush my teeth and wash my face.
When I got up to get my toiletries, I saw the chair that had been smashed into a pile of broken wood on the floor. My expression was priceless. What happened last night wasn't a dream; it was real.
I pinched my arm again.
"hiss!"
I gasped in pain. It was true, everything that happened last night was not a dream. Suddenly, I remembered something and rushed to the door. I opened the door and looked at the ground. I remembered that Fang Lei's body was lying on the ground last night. Where did it go? Only a faint black human-shaped mark remained.
"Changming, are you alright?"
Just then, I heard An Lili's voice from a distance. I looked up and saw An Lili standing not far away, looking at me with a surprised expression.
"It's nothing," I replied indifferently, then took my towel and walked towards the bathroom. As I passed An Lili, I didn't say another word to her.
If An Lili hadn't released that evil thing, I wouldn't have experienced such danger. At this point, my An Lili no longer has the same feeling as before.
"Brother Changming, actually I came here today to say goodbye. I'm resigning, and we may never see each other again. If I've done anything to hurt you, please forgive me, because it wasn't my intention." An Lili suddenly called out to me, her tone apologetic yet somewhat helpless.
"Okay." I paused for a moment, said this without turning my head, and continued walking forward.
After I finished washing up, I found that An Lili had already left sometime earlier. I went back to my small room to pack my things, and while I still had some time, I walked towards the small house by the wall. I wanted to check one last time to see if there was anything left in that small house.
I arrived at the cottage, but the wooden door was tightly shut. The morning sun shone on my face. I gritted my teeth and gently pushed the door open.
"Creak!"
The familiar sound of the door opening rang out. I held my breath and mustered my courage to look inside. The small room was covered in dust, but the original wooden bed was gone, and the hemp rope on the electric fan was also gone. Apart from being a little cool, there was nothing special about the small room.
I let out a long breath and gently closed the door. Fang Lei was gone, and everything here had returned to normal. It was no longer scary. It really proved the saying: "A mountain is not high if it has a deity, but it is sacred if it has a spirit; water is not deep if it has a dragon."
On my way to the courier station to clock in, I thought of the delayed text message on my phone. Since I'm still alive, I'll recall the message to avoid startling Tong Liu.
When I arrived at the courier station, Zhong Lingui had just arrived as well. He saw me and waved to me from a distance.
"Changming, did you have a wet dream last night? You look radiant and refreshed today." Zhong Lingui came to my side, handed me a cigarette, and said with a smile.
"No!" I took the cigarette, rolled my eyes at Zhong Lingui, and cursed inwardly, "What a fool you are! I almost got killed by something dirty last night."
Zhong Lingui reached out and hooked her arm around my neck, asking softly, "Did you know An Lili resigned? Did you bully that young girl?"
I pried Zhong Lingui's dirty hands off and snapped, "Get lost! What does her resignation have to do with me?"
Although An Lili did some things that hurt me, somehow she resigned, and I suddenly felt empty inside.
"But anyone can see she's interested in you, otherwise why would she bring you breakfast every day and run to your dorm?" Zhong Lingui stared intently at my face, a half-smile on her face.
"No woman is as gossipy as you. Go get to work." I rolled my eyes at Zhong Lingui again and headed straight for the sorting room.
Zhong Lingui followed behind me, saying to herself, "Sigh, An Lili is really filial. Her grandmother passed away half a year ago, and she came back from the city, but she ended up staying for half a year."
Upon hearing this, I immediately stopped and turned sharply to look at Zhong Lingui, asking in surprise, "What did you say?"
When Zhong Lingui saw me suddenly stop, he was caught off guard and couldn't brake in time, so his nose hit my shoulder.
"Waaah!"
Zhong Lingui covered her nose and sobbed, tears almost streaming down her face.
"You mean An Lili's grandmother died six months ago?" I asked again, loudly.
"Yes, Changming, what's wrong with you?" Zhong Lingui thought I didn't believe her, so she explained again, "Six months ago, I was delivering packages and saw that An Lili's family was holding a funeral. At that time, I also had a package for her neighbor. The person who delivered it told me about it. Is there a problem?"
"No." I took a deep breath, forcing myself to calm down, and replied with a single word, trying to appear composed.
"Changming, what are you doing? You're making such a fuss. You almost ruined my handsome nose," Zhong Lingui said irritably, covering her nose.
I ignored Zhong Lingui and turned to continue walking towards the sorting room, though my body was trembling slightly.
My face looked terrible, and my back was covered in cold sweat. If An Lili's grandmother had died six months ago, then what was that thing I saw?
Could it be...?
If Zhong Lingui wasn't mistaken, then the grandmother I saw in An Lili's room was a filthy creature.
Right, no wonder I felt so creeped out when I saw her. And that night, I gave her a chicken leg, but she didn't eat it; she just put it under her nose and smelled it.
And every time I see her, it's at night.
What I don't understand is why An Lili doesn't find someone to send her away after her grandmother has clearly died, and instead continues to live with her.
Actually, it's not surprising when you think about it. An Lili exudes mystery, or rather, eeriness. Otherwise, he wouldn't have opened the copper lock on the small house by the wall, or fed the things inside with a rooster. And that strange person, could it be An Lili's grandmother?
However, judging from their figures, An Lili's grandmother was much taller, while the strange person that night was rather short.
Was An Lili forced to do this because someone was pressuring her?
If I want to know, I can call Anlili now and ask her for clarification.
Forget it, it's all in the past. An Lili has already resigned, and whether she knows or not is none of my business. I'll just consider it something I owe her.
