...
After tidying up the removed gauze, Mu Bai's Adam's apple bobbed slightly. "Ruan Ruan, I'm going back first. You...you should rest early too."
Su Ruanruan, still clutching her inner garment, had already wrapped her arms around Mu Bai's waist, tilting her head up pitifully, "Brother Mu Bai, please stay with me, okay?"
"Sweetie, we... can't do this."
Su Ruanruan looked like a wounded fawn, her eyes lowered. "But I'm scared, and I have nightmares. When I close my eyes, all I see is Zhou the Butcher's fierce face..."
"Ruanruan, I'm sorry..." Mu Bai kissed Su Ruanruan's forehead, "It's my fault for not protecting you well."
Su Ruanruan said softly, "Then Brother Mubai, please stay and protect me tonight, okay?"
Mu Bai pondered for a long time, "Hmm, but soft and obedient, go to sleep."
Su Ruanruan knew, of course, that his unspoken message was that she couldn't lay a hand on him.
"Okay." Su Ruanruan smiled innocently.
On the roof, Huo Yan, dressed in wet clothes, put the tile back in its place and gave a cold laugh.
Nightmares? She really has nightmares? He didn't believe it.
He picked up the wine jug, tilted his head back, and took a swig of wine. The overflowing wine slid down his chin into his half-open shirt, then meandered down his chest to his V-line.
In the darkness, deep eyes were fixed on a few people who were quietly approaching from a distance.
The group of people were completely unaware that their movements were being monitored, and were busy lighting torches with tinderboxes.
When they threw the first torch into the woodpile in the yard, it was kicked back out in a perfect arc.
"Ah, my clothes."
The torch that was kicked out hit his face. Everything happened so suddenly that he had no idea what to do. He hurriedly tried to shield himself with his sleeve, but the flames ignited his clothes.
The other two were stunned by the sudden turn of events and simultaneously turned to look in one direction.
But then a strong man emerged from the darkness, his eyes as cold and brooding as water.
When I got closer, I finally recognized who he was.
"Officer Huo... Officer Huo."
Huo Yan saw the man roll on the ground a few times before finally extinguishing the flames on his body. However, his clothes were torn, and he had several burns on his body, causing him to howl in pain.
"What, instead of petty theft, you've started arson and murder?"
The remaining two men quickly knelt down, "It's a misunderstanding, a misunderstanding!"
"Misunderstanding?" Huo Yan took another swig of wine, pointed at Jin Yu holding a rope and Niu Mang eating steamed buns not far away, "I'm leaving this place to you, I'm leaving now."
He knew who had done it all; the mother and son blamed Su Ruanruan for Zhou the Butcher's death and wanted to kill her as soon as possible.
While Su Ruanruan is innocent, she is not entirely innocent.
Butcher Zhou's death... might really be related to her.
Huo Yan sighed softly, but Su Ruanruan was unaware of the impending danger and instead indulged in a dream with her beloved.
"Ruanruan, can you hear any noise outside?" Mu Bai sat up and looked out the window.
"No, you must have misheard. So many things happened today, you must be tired. Lie down and rest." Su Ruanruan nestled in Mu Bai's arms, but her ears were perked up.
"Oh, maybe I really misheard. It's alright," Mu Bai said gently.
Su Ruanruan had naturally heard the commotion outside, but now there was no sound.
She nestled in Mu Bai's arms, their fingers intertwined, gazing at his profile, and unknowingly drifted off to sleep.
Hearing the soft breathing beside him, Mu Bai slowly opened his eyes.
He kissed Su Ruanruan on the forehead, tucked her in, dressed, and returned to his room, where he lit a candle and began copying books diligently.
As dawn broke, Su Ruanruan turned over, only to find everything cold to the touch; the person beside her was gone.
She put on her clothes, gently opened the door, and saw that the washed clothes were already hanging on the bamboo pole in the yard. They were the clothes she wore in prison and the clothes Mu Bai wore when he fell into the water.
Sounds came from the kitchen, and the air was filled with a faint aroma of medicine and food.
Su Ruanruan quietly took a few steps forward and peeked through the half-open door. She saw Mu Bai sitting by the stove, adding firewood with one hand and reading a book with the other. There was also cooked white porridge and steaming hot steamed buns simmering on the stove.
Su Ruanruan felt a little sore, wondering what time Mu Bai had gotten up to do all this.
How can he be so good?
"Ruan Ruan, why are you awake so early? Why don't you sleep a little longer?"
Mu Bai finally saw Su Ruanruan standing outside the door and quickly draped the coat he was wearing over her shoulders.
"It's cold outside, go back and get some sleep. I'll call you for dinner when I'm done with my work."
Su Ruanruan wrapped her arms around his waist, leaned against him, and smelled his fragrance.
An unprecedented sense of security and happiness.
“Brother Mubai, the villagers don’t like me. They say I’m a curse that killed my parents and crippled my brother. They see me as an omen of bad luck. Perhaps you fell into the water yesterday because you got too close to me… If that’s the case, will you leave me?”
Mu Bai tenderly stroked Su Ruanruan's face, his eyes sparkling with a soft light and affection.
"We made a vow to be together through life and death, to hold your hand and grow old together."
"Ruanruan, I will never leave you unless you turn to dust and become a skeleton."
"Me too, Brother Mu Bai."
As dawn breaks and the sun rises in the east.
The mimosa trees in the courtyard are tall and graceful, their shadows undulating, and birds perch on their branches, creating a scene of birdsong and fragrant flowers.
The two dined at a stone table under the tree, chatting and laughing, appearing to be deeply in love.
After cleaning up the dishes and changing Su Ruanruan's dressing, there was a knock on the door.
