738. Learning to Fly (2/2)

So, single-mindedly, I continued to study how to maintain balance in the air, how to use my wings to fight the wind—no, not completely fight it, but learn to adapt and cooperate...

Qi Xu quickly figured out the trick and got the hang of it, but he was only one second away from being smashed into mincemeat.

Fortunately, the mother blackbird arrived and put Qi Xu back on her back.

Just as they regained their footing, the mother blackbird attacked with both wings and beak, beating the father blackbird so badly he had to cover his head!

"I told you to teach the kid to fly, not to take her to her death! So high? You just made her jump! Couldn't you have found a lower place to jump from first!"

The father of the big black bird looked aggrieved. "I didn't let her jump. She was too fast. I didn't even have a chance to say anything. I just wanted her to experience the height..."

"Still dare to talk back! Still dare to make excuses! The kid's brainless, and so are you! You know what kind of person she is!"

Qi Xu had been chirping and laughing non-stop on the side, thinking being a bird wasn't so bad, but when she heard the last sentence, she realized she'd been scolded by her mother too, and stopped laughing...

Having seen enough of the excitement, I found a small, not-too-high hill, struggled to climb it, and then tried to swoop down again...

Below was soft grass, and the wind was much gentler than at high altitude. Qi Xu stood on the top of the slope, shook his wings which were still covered with downy feathers, and imitated his parents, the big black bird. He first lowered his body slightly, flapped his wings gently twice to test the airflow, and then leaped down.

The wind was no longer as fierce as before, but gently cradled her wingtips. Qi Xu remembered the trick she had learned earlier, no longer resisting head-on, but letting her wings flutter gently in rhythm with the wind, her body leaning slightly forward. Surprisingly, she actually managed to steady herself and slowly maintain her balance...

Qi Xu was excited, knowing he was about to learn to fly, when a sudden downpour caused him to lose his balance and fall, getting covered in mud...

Qi Xu originally wanted to practice a little longer, but it was just raining.

But the rain came suddenly and violently, with large raindrops pounding the leaves and making a "rustling" sound. The originally gentle wind also became irritable, carrying rainwater into the gaps between the feathers.

The mother black bird flapped her broad wings and rushed over, shielding her from most of the rain with her body. She gently pecked away the clods of mud from her head with her sharp beak, grumbling, "Silly girl! Can't you find shelter from the rain? Your wings are soaked and you're still flapping! Why are you so stubborn, just like your father!"

Qi Xu was carried back to the nest by the mother black bird without even a chance to struggle.

Then I saw it and its father, the big black bird, sighing and looking up at the sky.

"What's wrong? I'll learn to fly when the weather gets better. I'm so smart, I'll definitely learn quickly."

"If we delay any longer, we might fall behind the group. The temperature will likely drop after the rain, and after that..."

The mother blackbird suddenly stopped talking.

Qi Xu understood and continued to ask, "Are we flying to a warmer place?"

Qi Xu knew this basic common sense: birds migrate to the warm south before the temperature drops significantly, but unexpectedly, the mother blackbird shook her head.
