Chapter 109: Filling in the application form

Soon it was time to hand in the papers, and Yun Yan handed in her paper along with the other candidates.

When she came out, many candidates had already left the examination room. They gathered together and discussed the test questions.

Yun Yan found Yang Qian, and the two of them followed the group to the cafeteria. The school cafeteria was open as usual during the college entrance examination, and except for those candidates whose homes were close by, all other candidates walked towards the cafeteria.

"Yun Yan, how do you feel today? How confident are you?" Yang Qian asked while eating.

"I think it's okay. I can do most of the questions." Yun Yan said in a relaxed tone.

"I'm a little unconfident. I feel like I haven't encountered many of the questions before. I don't know how many points I can get in the end." Yang Qian said a little dejectedly.

"Don't think about it now that the exam is over. Just focus on the afternoon exam. If your bad mood affects the afternoon exam, wouldn't that be a bigger loss?" Yun Yan said.

Yang Qian thought about it and felt that Yun Yan's words made sense. Even if she didn't do well in the first subject, she still had four other subjects to improve her score. After figuring it out, the haze in her heart immediately dissipated.

Yun Yan performed very stably in the next few exams. Yang Qian performed normally in the other exams except for the first one where she performed a little poorly.

The two and a half days of college entrance examination were over soon. Yun Yan and Yang Qian checked out of the guesthouse and rode their bicycles back to the Red Flag Brigade.

After returning to the Red Flag Brigade, Yang Qian immediately took Yun Yan to check the answers and calculated her approximate score.

The passing score for this year's college entrance examination is still a mystery, so even after Yang Qian roughly calculated her own score, she still felt unsure.

Seeing her expression, Yun Yan had no choice but to comfort her: "Yang Qian, you should just wait patiently for the preliminary selection notice. What's coming will eventually come. As for the results, you should know the results in half a month or twenty days."

In the following days, Yun Yan ate and drank as she pleased. She still had confidence in herself. After all, she wasn't planning on applying to a prestigious university; any university in Guangzhou would be fine.

The educated youth in the educated youth center were not as comfortable as Yunyan. After they came back from the exam and compared their scores with each other, the results were simply horrible. Now the entire educated youth center was in mourning.

During this time, Yun Yan sorted out her belongings and put everything she could take away into the space.

When she was free, she drew a few more drawings. Now her space contains more than 200 drawings of clothes for the four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter.

It was not until December 10th that we finally received the notice for the preliminary selection. All the candidates who received the notice went to the Education Office of the Revolutionary Committee of the commune on the 11th to fill out their applications.

Yang Qian also passed the preliminary selection. The next morning, she took Yang Qian to the commune on her bicycle. On the way, she met many educated youth. It seemed that everyone was very active.

After arriving at the commune, the two of them lined up together to get the volunteer form, and soon it was their turn.

After Yun Yan got the application form, she found a place to sit down and heard a group of people asking the staff how to apply for the application. Some people even asked about the college entrance examination results.

The staff didn’t know any of this at the moment, so they were a little impatient when answering.

Gaokao scores probably haven't come out yet, and it's not like the 21st century, where there are dedicated reference materials and application guides for the best schools and which majors are available. Filling out applications now mostly relies on students' imagination, and then it all comes down to luck, not unlike opening a blind box.

Yunyan had already learned about this. With the Gaokao (National College Entrance Examination) having just resumed this year, many art and design schools weren't accepting students. So, she applied to Zhongji University, Nan'en University, and First Normal University in Guangzhou.

Yang Qian’s choice of major was similar to hers, but she changed Chung-Chi University to Huabo University.

After filling out the application form, the two handed it in together and lined up for the physical examination. It was almost midnight when they finished the physical examination. When they walked out of the Revolutionary Committee, a light drizzle began to fall outside.

Fearing the rain would intensify, the two quickly rode their bicycles back to the Red Flag Brigade. After arriving at the Red Flag Brigade, they each went home. Yun Yan quickly lit a brazier and, after warming it for a while, grabbed a portion of rice and a portion of pickled fish from her space for lunch.

After eating and drinking, she went to the bedroom to take a nap. She hadn't had a good rest recently because of the college entrance examination.

On December 23rd, more than a month after the college entrance examination, Yunyan's admission notice finally came.

She was admitted to Zhongji University, and the notification letter was just a simple piece of letter paper. The words on the paper were mimeographed steel type. It first wrote Yunyan's grades, saying that she had been admitted to the Chinese Department of Zhongji University with this score, and then at the bottom of the letter paper was the date for her to report to the school.

Yun Yan looked at her grades, 396 out of a total of 500. Yun Yan was already very satisfied with this score. She wondered which university Yang Qian had been admitted to.

She had just asked the postman, and Yang Qian had also been admitted to university, and her admission letter arrived on the same day as hers.

After locking the door, Yun Yan went to Yang Qian's house and met the team leader on the way.

"Yun Zhiqing, I heard that your admission letter has come out. Which university did you get into?" asked the team leader.

"I was admitted to a university in Guangzhou." Yun Yan said with a smile.

"That's amazing! I heard that today only you and Yang Zhiqing in our team received admission letters. Does that mean that no one else got into university?" the team leader asked expectantly.

Secretly, he didn't want his daughter-in-law to be admitted to university so that she wouldn't abandon his son and grandson.

"That's not necessarily the case. Every school sends out admission letters at a different time, so some may arrive later." Yun Yan said.

Of course she knew that the captain had given up, but she couldn't talk nonsense.

Finally, the captain left with a gloomy face. Yun Yan shook her head helplessly at his expression. If his daughter-in-law was determined to take the college entrance examination and return to the city, she would probably make a big fuss after the requirements for the college entrance examination were announced next year.

Yang Qian was admitted to Nan'en University, and her total score was 20 points lower than Yun Yan's.

"Yun Yan, when do you plan to leave the Red Flag Brigade?" Yang Qian asked.

The reporting date on the admission letter was February 11, 1978, which was more than two months away.

"I plan to leave in a few days. When I arrive in Guangzhou, I don't plan to live in the school. I want to go there in advance and clean up the house." Yun Yan said.

Yunyan bought the house two years ago. It is near Central China University of Political Science and Law. It is a small courtyard of 180 square meters and cost 1,000 yuan.

"Then I'll leave with you on the same day, but you have to take me in for a while!" Yang Qian said jokingly.

After the two of them set the date for departure, they went to the brigade office to ask the brigade leader for a letter of introduction.
