"Sit down, your aunt is teasing you."
Wang Taozhi beat the eggs and put them into the steamer. She rolled her eyes at He Ruixue and said, "You're already so old, and you're still trying to coax children into eating candy. If you're really bored, go clean up your room. I just passed by your room and the quilt on the bed isn't made up. You don't look like a grown-up girl at all..."
"After folding it, you still have to spread it out at night. What a hassle."
He Ruixue touched her nose. Actually, she wanted to try whether the thing used to coax a child could have a critical hit. Well, it didn't look very good.
"Then why do you want me to wash your clean clothes when you have to wear them dirty? Come on, give me a hand. It won't be hard for the young lady to serve the dishes."
"If I don't go out, I don't have to wash these clothes."
He Ruixue reached out and took the plate from her hand, but Wang Taozhi rolled her eyes at her. "Dirty girl, how are you going to get married in the future? You can't wash clothes or cook. When the time comes, your mother will have to take me with her as your dowry."
She was waving the spatula loudly, and heard a knock on the door. She muttered a curse under her breath, opened the door a crack, and blocked the person out.
"Mr. Li, what are you doing? Knocking on someone's door at dinner time. I thought it was someone's kid who was so ignorant."
A thin-faced woman with a patched gray woolen hat on her head stood outside the door. She didn't get angry when she was told what to do, but just stretched her neck and kept looking into the room.
Smelling the aroma of meat, she sniffed and looked greedy. "Your family is having a good day today. You've had meat. My little grandson is crying for meat. I want to ask you to give him a piece or two. Look, I'll give you this piece of tofu in exchange."
Wang Taozhi lowered her eyebrows and glanced at the palm-sized tofu in the bowl. She sneered, "Don't spoil the child. If he thinks he can eat meat just by crying, it will be a disaster in the future. Who can afford to support him... It's not that I'm stingy, but this meat was brought by my mother-in-law to nourish my sister-in-law. Who dares to touch it? If she finds out that someone is snatching food from her precious daughter, do you think she will smash all the pots and stoves in your house?"
