Chapter 24: The house was robbed
More and more people gathered around to watch, and the owner could no longer save face, so he had to wink at the waiter.
After Wu Yuetang got the money, she took Ye Jingchen away.
After walking a little further away from the tavern, Wu Yuetang asked.
"Did you get deducted from your weight when you sold wild boar before?"
"I don't know. In the past, a wild boar would only sell for ten taels at most."
Ye Jingchen replied that he didn’t know if the weight was deducted, but it had never exceeded ten taels of silver.
Wu Yuetang felt gloomy. She had never expected that the male protagonist had only lost his memory, so how could he be deceived? Could it be that with the loss of memory, he had forgotten the common sense he had learned before?
Facing Wu Yuetang's suspicious eyes, Ye Jingchen rubbed his face uncomfortably, subconsciously avoiding her inquiring gaze.
"Today I sold a pig for over thirty taels. I have twenty-six taels here, and the remaining seven taels and nine cents are for you to take home."
After saying that, Wu Yuetang handed over the money, but she didn't expect Ye Jingchen to take five taels.
"There are two taels and nine cents left, so save them. Or you can use them as meal expenses."
Hearing Ye Jingchen's words, Wu Yuetang chuckled, "Are you planning to come here for free meals every day?"
After saying that, Ye Jingchen's ears turned red.
The two were in a good mood in town, unaware that they had guests at home.
Wu Shoutian took his three sons to the fields, leaving only Li and his two daughters-in-law at home. The three of them were originally studying the pattern of the red spider lily that Wu Yuetang had drawn before in the house, when they were startled by a hurried knock on the door.
"Come on, who's there? Is there something urgent?"
Hearing the anxious knock on the door, Li quickened her pace.
As soon as the courtyard gate was opened from the inside, Old Man Wu, Wu Houfu, with a gloomy face, was seen standing at the door, with Wu Qingtian and Wu Shouyi standing behind him.
"Dad, why are you here? Shoutian just went to the fields."
Li was frightened by the scene and took two steps back unconsciously.
"We're not here to look for the boss today."
Wu Houfu said this and walked straight in with his men and sat down at the long table.
"I heard your family is getting rich now? Do you eat meat and fish every day, and even white rice?"
Hearing Mr. Wu's questioning tone, Mrs. Li felt angry, but she didn't dare to get angry at the old man.
"It was Tang'er who went to town to sell some herbs and earned some money. Dad, you know Tang'er is a greedy girl. She spends her little money on meat. It's impossible for Shoutian and I to save money even if we want to."
Wu Qingtian, who followed in, understood what Li meant and asked her with a hint of playfulness.
"Auntie, what you're saying is that Sister Tang had a way to get rich but she didn't tell Grandpa. So it's Sister Tang's fault that she didn't leave any money for Grandpa and Grandma, right?"
"No, no, that's not what I meant."
Li quickly waved her hands to explain. The noisy sound in the yard also startled the two daughters-in-law in the house. They put down the embroidery in their hands and walked out. Seeing that it was someone from the head of the Wu family, they looked at each other in surprise.
"Oh, isn't this grandpa? Second uncle and nephew are here too."
The second daughter-in-law, Chen, immediately walked over and greeted them with a smile on her face. She thought that taking the initiative to show goodwill could ease the atmosphere, but she didn't expect that the three people in front of her were still looking at her coldly.
"Don't talk nonsense. Let me ask you, is Dad your dad? You earn money and buy food, so why don't you respect your parents? Do you expect us, the three of you, to support you?"
When Wu Shouyi saw that everyone had come out and Wu Yuetang was not there, he felt more confident. He stood forward with his hands on his hips and started pointing and gesturing.
"We've heard from the villagers that your family eats meat and rice every day now. It seems you've made a lot of money and bought a lot of food."
At this point, Wu Shouyi glanced at his father's face. Well, it's getting darker and darker. There really is going to be something interesting today.
"Aunt, we came here this time just to bring some food back from you. Grandpa and grandma's family can barely make ends meet. You should at least give some of the money you earn to grandpa and grandma."
Wu Qingtian also joined in the commotion, and the three women stood there trembling with fear, not knowing what to do. There was no man at home at the moment, and Tang'er was not at home either. They couldn't just take action against their father's family. If they were accused of being unfilial, being drowned in a pond would be the least of their punishment.
Seeing that the three of them didn't dare to say a word, Wu Houfu immediately slammed the table.
"If you don't say anything, that's considered agreement. Shouyi and Qingtian, you two should find some rice and bring some meat if you have any. Your mother was frightened the last time she came here, and she's still not well!"
Hearing what their father said, they both laughed and started searching in different directions.
Li was panicked now. She immediately ran over and knelt beside Wu Houfu, begging desperately.
"Dad, you can't do this. The food rations at home are all saved up from normal times. If you take them all away, how are we going to survive in the future?"
"Yes, Master. Usually, my little sister goes to town to buy what we eat at home. We buy as much as we eat. The money we earn is almost gone, so we are going to live on the surplus food."
The two daughters-in-law also went over to pray to Wu Houfu.
Although my younger sister brings back a lot of food every day, all the money belongs to her. No one in the family knows how much money she earns and how much she has left.
So what they said was true, but Mr. Wu didn't think so. He thought that the whole family of the old family was very selfish and thought that they didn't have to take care of their parents after the family split up.
The more these women said this, the angrier Wu Houfu became. He had originally wanted to leave something for them, but now he didn't want to leave anything for them at all.
"Second brother! Take away all the food! Don't forget to check the cellar!"
As Wu Houfu roared, Wu Shouyi and Wu Qingtian worked even harder, while Li wailed, her eyes turned black, and she fainted.
The two daughters-in-law immediately helped Li up and sent her back to the house. The eldest daughter-in-law came out and continued to plead with Wu Houfu.
"Master, you've taken away all the food from our house. What are we going to eat in the future? You know the four acres of land we were given is poor, and there's no harvest right now. Master! Are you trying to force us to death?"
As the eldest daughter-in-law spoke, tears began to fall.
"Humph, driving you to death? While you're eating delicious food and drinking spicy drinks every day, have you ever thought about how your grandparents and their family are still drinking rice soup and eating brown rice?"
Wu Houfu stood there, looking down at his eldest grandson's wife who was kneeling in front of him.
"Grandpa, when we split up the family, I told you and grandma to live with my second brother's family. If you can't eat meat and rice, that's my second brother's problem. Why do you have to come to our house? Ah!"
Before the eldest daughter-in-law could finish her words, Wu Houfu slapped her loudly, and her face instantly felt hot.
"It's a rebellion! It's really a rebellion! The old family is really bad, not only are they selfish, but they also talk back to their elders! We will go find your village leader and find out what's going on!"
When the eldest daughter-in-law heard that the old man was going to find the village head, she immediately shut her mouth, covered her red face, and sobbed softly.
"Dad, we've taken everything. A pound of rice, seven or eight pounds of potatoes, about ten pounds of sweet potatoes, and three or four pounds of semolina. There are also quite a few eggs."
"All grain? No meat?"
Wu Houfu frowned. Didn't they say they ate meat every day? Why was it all grain?
"I didn't find any pork, but I did find this big piece of pork fat!"
Wu Qingtian held up the pork fat in his hand and said, Wu Houfu looked at the big piece and estimated it was about five or six pounds, so it was okay.
After packing up their things, they left the Wu family. When Wu Qingtian left, he kicked the shaky wooden door hard.
The entire Wu family was so quiet that only the creaking of the wooden door could be heard.
