Chapter 5 Cat's Eye Grass
Wu Yuetang immediately rushed upstairs and saw that her bedroom was also brought over intact. The joy in her heart increased. When she saw the bathroom she had missed for a long time, the corners of her mouth almost stretched to her ears.
"I was just wondering how to take a bath in those drought years. This bathtub really saved my life."
Wu Yuetang lay on the edge of the bathtub, caressing it greedily as if she had found some rare treasure. Then she ran some hot water, went to the bedroom to get some clean clothes, and lay down in the bathtub.
Although I didn't do much work that day, the moment I lay down I felt as if I had saved the world and was filled with satisfaction.
Wu Yuetang finished her shower happily, wiped her damp hair, and went to her study. She vaguely remembered that her professor had given her a set of books on how to cultivate crops on loess soil. She searched the bookshelf and soon found the three books.
Wu Yuetang flipped through the pages, looking for land with similar geology to that of the Dayu Dynasty.
"I found it. This type of land is similar to the texture of the Loess Plateau. The land is dry and needs water to be diverted into canals to irrigate the farmland."
Wu Yuetang frowned. Diverting water into the canal was indeed a solution, but there was no South-to-North Water Diversion Project in the Dayu Dynasty, otherwise there would not have been a drought for three years.
Wu Yuetang shook her head, denying the idea, and then continued flipping through the book. Several seeds packed in small transparent bags fell out of the book.
"I remember this seed being a hybrid seed I cultivated when I was participating in an experiment at university. However, I don't think I've ever planted it, so I don't know what it will grow from."
Thinking of this, I put a few small packets of seeds on the clothes I took off and prepared to take them back.
After that, Wu Yuetang walked around the house, watched some TV, drank some red wine, and then went back to the bedroom to sleep.
The next day, Wu Yuetang was awakened by a knock on the door. She found herself still sleeping in the space. She immediately changed into her patched coarse cloth clothes, tied her hair into a bun, and walked out of the space.
After opening the door, I found that the sky outside was only slightly white. The person knocking on the door was Wu Zhiyun. He had already put on a backpack, holding a sickle in his hand, and looked eager to try.
"Little sister, it's already daybreak. When are we going to the mountains to dig potatoes?"
Wu Yuetang was speechless and rolled her eyes silently in her heart, but she responded with her mouth.
"I just got up. I'll wash up first."
He closed the door again, turned back into the space to wash up, and then returned to the dilapidated wooden house. He opened the door and walked out, picked up the bamboo backpack and sickle from yesterday, and walked towards the hill ahead with Wu Zhiyun.
"Little sister, can we still dig up so many potatoes today?"
Wu Zhiyun seemed to be obsessed with the potato pancakes he made yesterday and was thinking about digging more potatoes today.
"Third brother, you can't eat too many potatoes. I told you yesterday that potatoes are high in starch and eating too much is difficult to digest."
Wu Yuetang patiently explained to him, but as soon as she finished, she saw Wu Zhiyun's confused eyes, and she knew at a glance that he didn't understand.
"Little sister, I don't know anything about starch. I just thought it would be a good idea to dig out some and save it since we finally have a staple food that can fill us up."
Wu Zhiyun scratched his head embarrassedly and chuckled.
Wu Yuetang looked at him, thinking in her heart: Who is the older brother between us?
When he walked to the place where he had dug yesterday, Wu Yuetang silently opened the map, and a re-marked map appeared in front of Wu Yuetang.
"We dug here yesterday, let's go ahead and take a look."
As Wu Yuetang spoke, he walked forward with a sickle in hand. Wu Zhiyun followed behind him. He had wanted to continue digging in the same pit as yesterday, as there might still be a lot of potatoes.
But seeing that the younger sister didn't even look back, I followed her.
Wu Yuetang stopped walking for a while and stood by the wall of a mountain, looking at the grass on the ground. It looked like a modern four-leaf clover, but the leaves were yellow.
"Cat's eye grass?"
After hearing Wu Yuetang's words, Wu Zhiyun also squatted down and looked at the grass. As if he thought of something, he immediately jumped away.
"Little sister, this grass is poisonous and cannot be eaten."
"Poisonous? This is a medicinal herb, how can it be poisonous?"
Wu Yuetang was puzzled, and then she carefully recalled what she had learned about cat's eye grass. It is true that the young leaves of cat's eye grass are poisonous, but the roots underneath can be used as medicine. The seeds of cat's eye grass are also rich in oil and can be used to refine oil.
"It's okay. I'm not picking them to eat. They're medicinal herbs. I'll pick more and sell them in town."
As Wu Yuetang spoke, he picked up the sickle and harvested all the cat's eye grass on the ground and put it into the backpack.
Wu Zhiyun quickly stopped her, his voice filled with anxiety.
"Little sister, this is really not edible, and you can't sell it. How can it be a medicinal herb if it's poisonous?"
"Third brother, if you're worried, come with me to the town to sell it, okay?"
After hearing what his younger sister said, Wu Zhiyun gave up trying to stop her. After all, when they got to the town, they would know that this was not a medicinal herb but a poisonous weed.
Wu Zhiyun shook his head helplessly and followed the little girl in front again.
Wu Yuetang simply ignored Wu Zhiyun who was following behind her, and jogged ahead following the instructions on the map. She came to a few dead wood stumps and rummaged around. She found a lot of foxtail grass and dandelions, and threw them all into the backpack behind her.
Wu Yuetang stood up, wiped the sweat from her head with her sleeve, and looked up at the sun that was almost at its zenith. No wonder she felt so hot. There was no shade above her head. Anyone with a weak constitution would get heatstroke under such strong sunlight.
"We've almost finished digging up the herbs, let's find something to eat next."
Wu Yuetang looked at the map and saw some sweet potatoes underground not far away. Hey, that's a good thing. It tastes good whether steamed, boiled, fried, or baked, or even dried.
"Third brother, come here quickly, there are sweet potatoes here."
Wu Yuetang called out to the person behind him, and Wu Zhiyun immediately ran over after hearing it.
"Where?"
He looked around but didn't see any sweet potatoes, thinking that his little sister was trying to scare him.
"It's right under your feet. Dig down."
Wu Yuetang knocked the ground where he was standing with a sickle, signaled him to leave with his eyes, and then started digging hard with the sickle.
The situation was similar to yesterday. I dug more than half a meter deep before I saw sweet potatoes one after another. Although they were not big, there were quite a few of them. Seeing this, Wu Zhiyun immediately started digging nearby. As expected, he found a lot of sweet potatoes.
"Little sister, I have a lot here too."
Wu Zhiyun smiled happily, his face beaming with joy, his hands never stopping, digging with one hand and throwing into the backpack with the other.
Soon the backpack was full. Seeing that Wu Zhiyun wanted to dig more, Wu Yuetang hurriedly stopped him.
"Hey, stop digging for now. We still have to go to town to sell herbs."
"Ah? Are you really going to sell it?"
Wu Zhiyun said in disbelief.
