Chapter 4 Getting a Haircut

When they got home, Er Ya and San Ya had already picked the vegetables. Er Ya was squatting by the stove, sweating profusely as she tended the fire and cooked porridge, while San Ya was peeling the skin of a loofah. Loofah is what people here call it.

Seeing the two children working so hard, Yang Cui felt a mix of emotions. In modern times, they would still be the apple of their parents' eyes, but here, they had to do all sorts of work!

Then I think about myself. I finally got promoted to the general manager of a branch of a chain fresh food supermarket, but when I woke up, I was a cannon fodder, a divorced woman, and a mother!

She has no idea how to take care of a child.

Aaaaaah!!!

Yang Cui wanted to curse the heavens! Damn it!

"Mother, you're back!" Sanya called out sweetly when she saw Yang Cui.

Yang Cui sighed inwardly, thinking that she could only make the best of it since she was already there.

She walked over and said, "Er Ya and San Ya, you've worked hard today. Go and get three eggs from the house. We'll have gourd and egg soup tonight."

Er Ya and San Ya looked at each other, motionless.

Why don't you go get it?

Sanya swallowed hard, and Erya asked timidly, "Can we...eat eggs too?"

Yang Cui felt heartbroken upon hearing this.

The chickens in the Lin family were raised by Er Ya and San Ya, but eggs, being a precious commodity, were only for Lin Shikang and his mother. Lin Shikang favored his daughter Daya, who looked very much like him, so sometimes Daya would get a few bites. However, the two sisters could only eat a few bites during festivals like the New Year; otherwise, they could only watch longingly.

"Eat! Of course you can eat! You two are the ones who raise the chickens at home, so you're the ones who deserve to eat the eggs! From now on, the three of us will eat eggs every day!" Yang Cui said boldly.

Er Ya and San Ya were overjoyed when they heard this. San Ya immediately smiled and said, "I'll feed our chickens from now on. I'll feed them even better than before, so they're well-fed and lay lots of eggs!"

Er Ya quickly chimed in, "I'll feed them with my sister from now on! We'll catch lots of bugs to feed the chickens!"

"Alright, alright, you're all good kids, go get the eggs!"

"I'll go get it!" Er Ya dashed into the house in a flash.

The gourd was ready. Yang Cui walked to the stove, opened the pot lid, and saw that it was cooking millet porridge, the kind with more water than porridge.

"Now that we're in charge, we won't eat such thin porridge anymore."

Sanya was a little confused. Good food was certainly good, but…

"Mother, if that's the case, will we have enough food to eat?"

Yang Cui gently pinched the bridge of her high, straight nose and laughed, "There's enough to eat, don't worry! You two sisters definitely won't go hungry!"

I have thirty taels of silver now, which is enough to keep me from starving for a while. But I need to plan carefully how to make money from money, since there are no job opportunities and the grain yield is not high in this era. You can't just eat if you are hardworking.

Er Ya brought three eggs. Yang Cui asked her to crack the eggs into a bowl and beat them with chopsticks, while Yang Cui washed and scrubbed the pot, put it on the stove, and prepared to cook the dishes.

The gourd and egg soup cooks quickly, and today is Yang Cui's first day here. There aren't many other dishes at home, so she didn't have time to prepare anything else and could only make do with what she had.

For Yang Cui, this meal was just something to make do with, but for Er Ya and San Ya, it was like a holiday. After all, Yang Cui was willing to use oil and salt when cooking, and there were eggs too, so this meal was already quite luxurious.

Three gourds and three eggs were used to make a huge bowl. The mother and her two children each drank two bowls of rice and ate a bowl of thin millet porridge. All three of them were stuffed.

Following the original owner's memories, Yang Cui found scissors in the house.

"Er Ya and San Ya, come here, I'll fix your hair."

These two girls had messy, tangled hair, like a bird's nest. Their hair was dry, yellow, and matted, and you could vaguely see lice eggs.

Er Ya and San Ya looked at Yang Cui in horror: "Mother, isn't it forbidden to cut hair?"

The ancients believed that one's body and hair were given to one's parents, and therefore never trimmed one's hair unless one became a monk.

"You can get it cut. Look how many lice and eggs are in your hair. Trim it, wash it properly, and it will be cleaner and fresher. Your hair will grow better in the future."

Mother said it was okay to cut, so Er Ya and San Ya agreed to cut.

Yang Cui used her unprofessional skills to swindle her two adopted daughters, and the worst part is that these two silly girls actually thought it looked good.

There was nothing for bathing or washing hair at home, so the mother and her two children washed their hair and took baths with hot water. Yang Cui always felt that they weren't clean enough, but that was all they had, so they made do.

When Yang Cui went to bed that night, she remembered Zhou Zhuo's words. Before going to sleep, she quickly called the two maids out to stand guard at the door. She hid the silver at home before letting the two children in.

Yang Cui checked the doors and windows very carefully and sealed them tightly. She had no choice; she was a widow and orphan, and with the Lin family, her mortal enemy, around, she had to be careful. If she lost the money, she would have nowhere to turn.

With the departure of the Lin family mother and son, as well as Lin Daya, the house became more spacious. The house had three rooms in total. The main room in the middle was where people ate, and the two side rooms on the left and right were for living. Previously, Lin Shikang slept alone in the left side room, and the right side room had two beds. Fan Shi slept in one bed with Daya, and Yang Cui slept with Er Ya and San Ya.

Now that everyone who was supposed to leave has left, there are more places to sleep. Yang Cui's idea was for the two children to sleep in Lin Shikang's room, but the two children couldn't bear to be apart from her, so in the end, the two of them slept in the bed that Fan Shi used to sleep in.

Er Ya and San Ya had fallen asleep in bed long ago. Yang Cui, having just arrived in this strange world, was honestly still filled with fear. She didn't know if she could ever return to her original world.

Don't be fooled by the thirty taels of silver in the family. Here, she has no land or fields. If she just sits around eating away her savings, she won't be able to feed three people for a lifetime. And if she gets sick, it will be even more tragic, because medical care is extremely expensive in this era!

Unless you use those thirty taels to make money from money!

But what kind of business should we do?

Yang Cui plans to go to the county town tomorrow to take a look around and do some research. She also needs to buy two plots of land, because land and food are the only guarantees of survival in this era.

Yang Cui tossed and turned, thinking about many things, until her eyelids drooped and she could no longer stay awake, before finally falling asleep.

But just then, there was a noise outside the door, followed by a noise from the window. Yang Cui was so frightened that she was instantly wide awake!
