Chapter 5 The Money Is Lost

Er Ya and San Ya were fast asleep and didn't react at all. Yang Cui carefully got up. Although it was night, it wasn't pitch black. Using the dim light, Yang Cui picked up the carrying pole from the side of the inner door and held it tightly in her hand, thinking that if these people really came in, she would use the carrying pole to beat them as hard as she could!

Because the doors and windows were blocked by tables, chairs and cabinets, they couldn't open them or get in, so the noise got louder and louder, and Yang Cuixin was on tenterhooks!

At this moment, Sanya burst into tears: "Waaaaah..."

The sudden crying startled Yang Cui, and the people outside were also taken aback.

Then came Sanya's cries: "Mother, don't abandon me, don't abandon me! Waaah..."

Er Ya was woken up by the noise. When she heard San Ya crying so sadly, she thought her mother was gone and immediately started crying too.

Helpless, Yang Cui could only walk over and gently comfort her, "It's alright, it's alright, don't cry. I didn't abandon you. Mother is here, Mother is here."

Upon smelling the familiar scent, Sanya stopped crying: "Mother, I dreamt that you disappeared and didn't want us anymore!"

"Dreams are always the opposite of reality, don't be afraid, don't be afraid," Yang Cui gently patted their backs, comforting them.

"Mom, would you like to sleep with us?"

Although Yang Cui couldn't see the expectation in Er Ya and San Ya's eyes, she could hear it in their voices.

The thieves who were trying to break in heard that the mother and her two daughters were awake and had no choice but to leave. Although they did not think Yang Cui and her daughters were a threat, they were worried that Yang Cui would attract other villagers.

Although Yang Cui was comforting her two adopted daughters, she was actually keeping an eye on what was happening outside. When she heard their footsteps as they left, she finally felt relieved.

Sanya pleaded again, "Mother, let's sleep together, okay?"

"Okay, let's sleep together."

Yang Cui lay down between her two adopted daughters, Er Ya and San Ya, who were overjoyed and clung tightly to Yang Cui.

After this incident, Yang Cui was wide awake. Thirty taels of silver was a huge sum of money. These people hadn't succeeded tonight, and who knew if they would come back tomorrow, the day after, or even later?

We can't keep having this scary every night!

After thinking for a moment, Yang Cui finally came up with a solution!

The next morning, Yang Cui got up, went to the kitchen, took a few chili peppers, broke them in half, and then reluctantly applied them around her eyes. Oh my god, it's so spicy!

Immediately, tears welled up in her eyes from the spiciness, and then she smeared some chili pepper around the eyes of her two children, Er Ya and San Ya.

"Mom, it hurts my eyes."

"Your mother is telling you, you two go to the door and cry loudly, saying that our family's money has been stolen by thieves, all of it has been stolen!"

Upon hearing this, the honest Er Ya and San Ya panicked: "Mother, is all our money gone?"

Fearing the children might let something slip, Yang Cui lied to them, saying, "Yes, they were all stolen. You need to go outside now..."

Before she could even utter the word "cry," Er Ya burst into tears.

"Waaaaah... What are we going to do now?"

When Er Ya started crying, San Ya joined in, crying, "Are we going to starve to death? Waaah..."

Yang Cui: "..." I never expected that the two children would believe it so easily and cry. What a divine intervention!

Just then, Auntie Ai, the village's notorious gossip, came over, and Yang Cui immediately unleashed her amateur Oscar-worthy acting skills: "How unlucky I am! They stole all my money, how are we going to live now! Waaah..."

Upon hearing this, Aunt Ai hurriedly ran over: "Yang Cui, what did you say? You lost your money?"

Auntie Ai's voice was loud, and it quickly attracted the attention of the other neighbors.

"What money is missing?"

"All thirty taels gone?"

Tears streaming down her face, Yang Cui nodded: "I heard some noise last night, but I thought it was just a mouse, so I didn't pay attention. This morning when I woke up, all the money was gone, sob sob sob..."

The two girls, Er Ya and San Ya, cried loudly, "Mom, what are we going to do? Are we going to starve to death?!"

"Such a large sum of money! No wonder someone is eyeing it."

"Oh dear, how are we going to live from now on!"

"You heartless beast! You stole such a large sum of money, you ungrateful widow!"

Daya pushed through the crowd and walked up to Yang Cui: "Mother, did you really lose your money?"

Yang Cui looked at the girl in front of her, her eyes revealing not concern, but a test! Yes, a test!

“How could this be fake?” Yang Cui said. “Also, I’m not your mother. You can call me Auntie from now on.”

"Auntie, did you lose all the money?"

"Yes, it's all gone. How are we going to live?" Yang Cui cried, tears streaming down her face. When Daya heard the news, she hurriedly ran away.

Yang Cui knew that she had gone to inform the Lin family.

"Karma! It really is karma!" Madam Fan laughed heartily at home.

Chief Lin was also pleased: "Serves you right for being so arrogant! Now you've lost your money! Karma!"

"Do I still have to lie to my aunt?" Daya asked.

“We’ve lost all our money, what are we going to do? You’re not allowed to go, or they’ll come after you and ignore you!” Madam Fan spat.

The news that Yang Cui had received thirty taels of silver quickly spread throughout the village. Now that she had lost thirty taels, the news spread just as fast. Some sighed, some watched the drama unfold, and some remained indifferent.

Having lost such a large sum of money, Zhou Daqing, as the village's top leader, naturally had to ask about it, and Yang Cui successfully tricked him again.

Zhou Daqing sighed and said, "I'm afraid we can't get this money back. Fortunately, the two children are grown up now. They'll get married in a couple of years, and then you'll be able to relax."

After Zhou Daqing returned home, he had his wife bring him a few more kilograms of sorghum rice. In those days when people were starving and cold, this was a timely act of kindness.

Yang Cui declined several times before finally accepting it. She was afraid that if she refused, it would arouse suspicion, so she had no choice but to keep it for now and think about returning it to the person later.

After the villagers left, Yang Cui began preparing breakfast.

Er Ya stood up and said, "Mom, we're not hungry."

“How could we not be hungry? We definitely need to eat breakfast. Go check the chicken coop and see if there are any eggs.” After saying that, Yang Cui paused. “Don’t think that just because we lost money, we shouldn’t go without food and drink. Eat your fill first, and then we’ll work together to figure out how to earn more. Trust me, we will definitely have a good life.”

Er Ya and San Ya looked completely bewildered.

"Go and fetch three eggs."

"Mother, let's keep the eggs to sell for money! We just ate eggs yesterday," Er Ya said, swallowing hard and forcing herself to endure her hunger.

"Yesterday is yesterday, and today is today. But if anyone asks, you can't say what you ate today, otherwise people will think we still have money and keep trying to steal from us. You don't want our house to be targeted by thieves again, do you?"

Er Ya and San Ya nodded like chicks pecking at rice, resolutely refusing to tell anyone.
