Yang Juan shamelessly stayed, but what made her most unhappy was her three children, because Yang Juan and her children ate so much! They ate several days' worth of food in no time. Also, Yang Juan would yell at them and even tried to steal things.
The next day, after breakfast, Yang Juan took her son for a stroll. There was no way she would work; she would never work for Yang Cui in her entire life.
"Let me make this clear from the start: if you're not going to work, you can have lunch on your own; there's nothing for you to eat at my house."
Yang Juan disagreed with Yang Cui's words.
Yang Cui's family is still very busy every day. The younger ones dig for earthworms, collect pine needles, and clean the duck shed. Yang Cui has to do heavy work such as gathering firewood, chopping wood, and carrying water. She also has to collect earthworms, cook them, feed them to the ducks, and do housework.
As soon as Yang Cui's family left, Yang Juan couldn't wait to go to Yang Cui's room to "borrow money," only to find that the door to the side room was locked!
"Damn Yang Cui!" Yang Juan cursed angrily, kicking the door twice. The door was fine, but her legs went numb.
With such a busy schedule, Yang Cui naturally couldn't keep a close eye on Yang Juan, so she locked the two side rooms before leaving.
Even so, the three children were still worried, fearing that Yang Juan might move all the family's belongings away without a word, so they took turns coming back to check on things every now and then.
For lunch, Yang Cui cooked millet porridge, making sure it was well-cooked for the little guy Jin Dandan. She also made a refreshing cucumber salad and stir-fried some loofah. The vegetables were grown with organic fertilizer and hadn't been sprayed with pesticides. They didn't look pretty, but they tasted really good.
When it was time to eat, Yang Juan took Jin Dandan to sit at the table, only to find that there were no bowls or chopsticks prepared for her.
Yang Cui ladled a bowl and placed it in front of Yang Juan: "This is for your son. You did nothing and have no food. If you eat your son's food, then he will go hungry. You decide whether to starve yourself or him."
"Yang Cui, you're so stingy. I never knew you were like this before." Yang Juan didn't believe Yang Cui would refuse to feed her.
Jin Dandan was also hungry and started clamoring for food, so Yang Juan fed her son first, complaining as she did so: "Dandan is still your nephew, no matter what, he's better than that adopted one! You don't even know how to steam an egg custard for the child."
"Who told you to eat ten eggs in one go yesterday? We have enough to eat every day, but you ate so much yesterday that you wasted it all."
Yang Juan felt a little embarrassed, but she didn't think she had done anything wrong.
After feeding the child, Yang Juan got up to serve the porridge, only to find that the pot was empty.
Yang Juan stormed out, furious: "Yang Cui, are you kidding me? Where's the food? You've all finished eating!"
Yang Cui replied calmly, "I've said it before, I don't support idlers. If you want to eat, and eat well, you have to earn it through labor. How old are Er Ya, San Ya, and Qiu Qiu in your family? They have to do so much work every day. What makes you think you can act like a king at home? Don't always think about getting something for nothing. There's no such thing as a free lunch."
"you……"
Yang Juan was genuinely angry; she truly hadn't expected Yang Cui to actually do it!
Ignoring Yang Juan's anger, Yang Cui turned to educate the three children: "Remember my words, there is no such thing as a free lunch. In a little while, the three of you will each write these two sentences down five times before you go to take a nap."
"Understood," the three children replied in unison.
After the meal, Yang Cui cleaned up the table and washed the dishes. The three children supervised each other as they drew and wrote on the ground with twigs, muttering to themselves as they wrote.
Touching her empty stomach, Yang Juan had no choice but to cook again, only to find that the rice jar was also empty.
"Yang Cui, what do you mean?"
"Isn't what I mean obvious? I'm just telling you that it's impossible to eat, drink, and live for free! Yang Juan, you're smart, but I'm not stupid either. I, Yang Cui, don't take advantage of you so easily. Do I need to expose your thoughts and motives? I've already shared the way to make money with you. As long as you're diligent and hardworking, your future won't be bad. Do you expect someone to feed you food and meat?"
Yang Cui disliked Yang Juan, but Yang Juan was only a teenager and the original owner's younger sister, so Yang Cui naturally hoped that Yang Juan could walk the right path.
Yang Cui continued, "If you weren't my sister, do you think I would pay any attention to you? We no longer have a family. Just like you said, our parents and brothers are all gone. You only have me. We sisters can only live better if we support each other. If you encounter difficulties or are bullied in the Jin family in the future, only I can stand up for you!"
Yang Juan, I know you're angry that your parents didn't marry you off to Lin Shikang, and you feel they're biased. But have you ever thought about how much work you did growing up, or how much my older sister and I did? And... look at me now, do you still think that if you had married Lin Shikang, you would have lived a life of luxury?"
Lin Shikang is indeed a promising prospect, but what's the point if he becomes successful but doesn't share his wealth with you? If Yang Juan had married Lin Shikang back then, would her fate have been any better than the original owner's?
"Think it over carefully. If you still can't figure it out, then don't come back."
Yang Juan's eyes were already brimming with tears.
The Jin family's life was not easy. Poverty was only one aspect. What was most distressing was that the Jin family had three sons. Jin Duobao was the second son and the least favored. His sister-in-law and brother's wife were not honest either. The Jin family was in constant chaos.
That's why Yang Juan couldn't accept it and was jealous of Yang Cui. Why did she have such a hard life while Yang Cui was so comfortable, since they were born from the same mother?
Yang Juan only truly understood the old saying after she married into the family: "The marriage your parents let you marry may not be good, but the marriage they don't let you marry is definitely not good."
