Zhao Luochuan had only finished half of his meal when he was called away by the villagers. Zhu Cuilan left some food for him in the cupboard for him to eat when he came back.
The remaining three people had a simple meal and started to busy themselves with their own things.
Yang Donghu and Zhao Fangchu carried the hawthorns into the kitchen. There were too many hawthorns, so they had to cook them several times to finish them. They had to work quickly, otherwise it would be difficult to sell them if it got late.
It took the two of them a while to finish making all the hawthorns, and they used a total of five kilograms of sugar.
When I came out of the kitchen, Zhu Cuilan was no longer in the yard.
"Brother Dong, I don't know where mom has gone. Should we wait for her to come back?" Zhao Fangchu was young and had never sold things on his own, so he couldn't make up his mind.
Yang Donghu looked at the sky. It was already late. He was afraid that if he delayed any longer, it would be difficult to sell the goods, so he said, "I don't know when my aunt will be back. Why don't we go first? We won't go far, we can sell it in the village. Maybe we can run into her later."
Zhao Fangchu thought so too, so he said nothing more, locked the door, and went out with Yang Donghu.
Zhu Cuilan thought of Zhao He and Zhao Fangyu and they would be back in the evening, so after dinner she went to the village butcher to buy a piece of meat to make dumplings for dinner.
Although there are two people in the family who can earn money and the family is relatively well-off, Zhu Cuilan is usually very frugal. Dumplings are rarely served on the table except during festivals.
Zhao Fangyu is old now, and he cannot delay asking a matchmaker to arrange a marriage. Once the matter is settled, he will have to spend more money.
Although Zhao Fangchu is a boy, if he wants to find a good husband in the future, he must prepare a generous dowry so that he will not be wronged when he marries into the family.
Save as much as you can on a daily basis. Only when you have money in your hands can you feel confident.
But she was happy today, carrying two kilograms of meat in her hand, and met many people along the way.
She was walking briskly home when she was stopped by a shout from the side.
"Hey, Aunt Cuilan, why did you buy such a big piece of meat? Is there any good news?"
The one who called her was Li Guihua, who was recognized as the loudspeaker in the village. If she found out about something happening in someone's family, she would shout it all the way to the next village.
Zhu Cuilan usually didn't want to have much contact with her, but now that she had met her, it was not good to remain silent. "Aunt Guihua, you are sitting here. Isn't it? Dahe and Fangyu are back today. I thought they worked hard, and now that they are back, I bought some meat for them to nourish themselves."
As soon as Li Guihua caught a chance to talk, she would ask endless questions: "I heard Dachuan got married, why didn't he bring his new wife out for a walk?"
Zhu Cuilan knew she would ask this, and didn't want to say anything more. She just interrupted, "Oh, look at me. It's getting late. I have to go back and cook. Otherwise, I'll be late and my wife will be angry. Come visit us when you have time."
After saying this, he didn't give Li Guihua a chance to speak, waved at her and left quickly.
Li Guihua wanted to ask something, but seeing her walk away quickly, she rolled her eyes and curled her lips, then turned to the others and said, "Tell me, how did Zhao Luochuan, who killed his mother and father and was destined to be a bachelor his whole life, get married?"
Another person chimed in, "You don't know, this was arranged before his father died. I heard the girl he was betrothed to was from the next village, but he ended up marrying her off as a boy. There was quite a fight between the two families."
Li Guihua's eyes lit up when she heard the gossip. She sat down next to the man and grinned, "I heard he spent twenty taels of silver, but ended up marrying a boy. It was all wasted. Oh, oh, oh, oh, Zhao Luochuan has such a hard life, I wonder if his wife can handle it."
The others also laughed when they heard it, and a few of them gathered together, muttering about something else.
It is not the busy farming season now, and the women in the village gather in groups of three or four to chat when they have nothing to do.
But this also happened to be convenient for Yang Donghu and Zhao Fangchu. They went out, walked around most of the village, and met a few aunts talking under a big tree.
Zhao Fangchu is outgoing and sweet-spoken. He calls everyone "Auntie" or "Grandma" whenever he sees them. People he chats with will call him over to talk when they see him.
Some sharp-eyed women noticed Yang Donghu beside him and asked him who he was.
"This is my brother Okawa's husband."
Zhao Fangchu pushed Yang Donghu forward and taught him how to call for help.
Yang Donghu had almost adapted to it by now, and he called whoever he was told to call, even calling them aunt and auntie.
The women all responded one by one, and chatted with them for a while. When they saw that they were carrying a basket, they asked them where they were going.
Yang Donghu opened the basket, revealing the white and red hawthorns inside.
Several people were very curious. They had never seen anything like this before, so they couldn't help but ask, "What is this?"
Yang Donghu explained to the others, "Auntie, this is hawthorn."
"Hawthorn? I know this red one is hawthorn, but what is this white layer on the outside?" Aunt Zhang who asked the question was very surprised. Hawthorn is common, but this is the first time she has seen such a strange hawthorn.
Yang Donghu didn't answer. He just picked up one from the basket and handed it to Aunt Zhang: "Try it first."
Aunt Zhang took the hawthorn, looked at it carefully, opened her mouth and took a small bite, then sipped it in her mouth: "Hey, it's a little sweet, it tastes like candy."
Zhao Fangchu smiled and said, "This is sugar."
Yang Donghu gave one to each person and asked them to taste it.
"It's really strange. This is the first time I've eaten hawthorn like this in my life. But you know what, it's really delicious."
