Master Zhao reiterated to the students who had already arrived in the classroom, "Learning a foreign language is not something that can be accomplished overnight; it requires diligence and perseverance. That's why I have high expectations for you, and it's for your own good."
"Since you lack self-discipline, then your teachers will be your support, pushing you to learn. Anyone who is more than ten minutes late or leaves early will have 0.2 credits deducted and their palms slapped twenty times. If it happens more than five times, be prepared to retake the course!"
Master Zhao then wrote this requirement on the blackboard.
She glanced at her watch; there were still five minutes left. Almost all the students in the class had arrived, except for Ke Meiyu.
Master Zhao stood at the door with a cold and stern face, already holding a thick ruler in her hand and tapping it on her palm, waiting eagerly.
Huo Chengfang and Xia Haifeng exchanged worried glances. As they picked up their books to recite, they couldn't help but say amidst the loud recitation, "It's already this late and Ke hasn't arrived yet. Could something have happened?"
"Didn't we hear during dinner that there was a lot of noise in Building 13 last night? And Ke is staying in room 314..."
"Master Zhao is clearly waiting to find fault with Ke!"
During morning exercises, students run in groups according to their dormitory buildings, and since Ke Meiyu didn't eat at the cafeteria, they still don't know her situation.
The two were anxious and lost interest in reading, their eyes frequently glancing towards the door.
As the clock was about to strike seven, Ke Meiyu walked lightly into the classroom, smiled, bowed to Master Zhao, and greeted her in a foreign language: "Good morning, Ms. Zhao. Did you not sleep well last night? Why are your dark circles so heavy?"
Master Zhao was furious.
She never expected that Ke Meiyu would be able to attend class on time.
Master Zhao nodded with a grim expression and said sternly, "Don't you even look at the time? Everyone else is here, but you're the only one who just barely made it into the classroom. This kind of attitude towards learning is unacceptable! Write a self-criticism later and bring it to my office at noon."
Ke Meiyu raised an eyebrow. "So what if she's a teacher? Look at how capable she is, coming up with all sorts of ideas so easily."
Seeing her arrive on time, Huo Chengfang and Xia Haifeng breathed a long sigh of relief. Now they were starting to worry about memorizing the text again.
Most people only start learning foreign languages in high school, so their foreign language skills are basically weak. Even if they can choose a foreign language college, they rely on improving their scores in other subjects. Some of them can only recognize the twenty-six letters of the alphabet...
They couldn't even walk properly, yet they were being driven around.
Many of them stayed up all night yesterday in their dorm, flipping through dictionaries and collaboratively noting the pronunciation of each word.
These days, it's already a feat if they can read fluently during their 20-minute morning reading session, let alone memorize it!
Actually, everyone could see that Master Zhao was targeting Ke Meiyu and using them as cannon fodder.
They dared not speak out in anger, nor would they blame Ke Meiyu. They only complained about their bad luck in having such a teacher who couldn't distinguish right from wrong and used his position for personal revenge.
Unable to find fault with Ke Meiyu, Master Zhao said coldly, "You all need to memorize properly. I will check your memorization during the first class. Those who fail to memorize will have points deducted from their daily performance." After saying that, she lost patience and left with a clatter of her leather shoes.
They only started wailing after they saw her leave the teaching building through the window.
"Two articles, each with over two hundred words, and I'm already quite capable if I can recognize more than ten..."
"Deducting points, deducting points, what else is she saying besides deducting points?"
"It's over, I feel like I have no hope of graduating..."
Even Huo Chengfang and Xia Haifeng slumped listlessly on the table, utterly dejected: "This isn't something we can do well just by trying; it's too much to ask!"
Ke Meiyu's eyes flickered slightly as she stood up and walked to the podium with a smile. "Students, foreign languages are actually quite simple, especially spoken ones. If we read them a few more times to develop a feel for the language, our mouths will be faster than our brains."
"If you trust me, shall we recite the text together? There are still twenty-six minutes until the first class, which is enough."
Having witnessed Ke Meiyu's foreign language proficiency, they nodded repeatedly and said gratefully, "Ke is so kind!"
"Yes, you said before that you didn't like helping others, it seems that was just you being modest..."
Ke Meiyu raised her hand, and everyone fell silent.
She turned around and quickly copied the first sentence onto the blackboard. She read it aloud, briefly explained its meaning, and incorporated some simple memory techniques from later generations.
Everyone took her seriously, trusted her enough, and were all smart and hardworking people who had gotten in based on their grades, so naturally the results were good.
In such a short time, they memorized two beautiful articles consisting of more than 500 words, and they were familiar with the meaning of the articles and also began to discover the joy of learning foreign languages.
Just as Ke said, foreign languages are not difficult at all. It's just that they haven't been exposed to the environment, haven't studied systematically, and haven't used the right methods. As novices, of course they would be intimidated by foreign languages!
The bell for the first class had already rung. Master Zhao walked up to the stage, took out the roster with a cold and stern face, slammed it on the table, and sat down on the bench. "Now, you will all come up one by one to recite. Reading a book a hundred times will make its meaning clear. Learning a foreign language is a process of rote memorization. There are no shortcuts!"
"I will explain the text in detail in class after you have memorized it thoroughly."
The students had almost finished memorizing, and their faces did not show the bitter expression that Master Zhao had expected. Instead, they showed an undisguised excitement.
Master Zhao frowned in displeasure, lowered her head and called out Ke Meiyu's name first, after all, she was the top student in the class.
The earlier someone memorizes, the less time they have available for memorization.
