Chapter 308 Another Birthmark

The Zhao family has no connections in the capital. Besides, powerful people are quick-witted and don't act without a clear benefit. Even if they wanted to use Old Master Zhao's connections, they wouldn't do anything without his approval.

The money in their hands was dwindling day by day, but the jobs they found were very ordinary labor jobs, only twenty or thirty yuan a month!

Such a job would be highly coveted by ordinary families, but they were members of the Zhao family. The old man was a specially protected figure and one of the elders who could reside in the Forbidden City.

How can they be workers?

At the very least, he should be a director or section chief or something like that, right?

Moreover, they have no extra income and rely solely on their wages. What can they do with that little money?

Unable to find a way out on their own, they could only wait for news from the old man.

But the old man's answer was always to wait, and another month or so passed.

Zhao Fanghua was different from the rest of the Zhao family. The others all worked hard as a family, either with the husband and wife supporting each other or with the help of their parents. She had lost both her parents and was a girl who was later found. Even her own grandfather didn't protect her, so how could her uncles and aunts possibly take care of her?

She stubbornly left home, but with no way to find work, rent and daily meals were a huge expense. For the past month, she had only spent money and had no income, so she was somewhat frightened and had no choice but to lower her head and shamelessly move back home.

In her view, they were all descendants of the Zhao family, so why was she the one being taken advantage of while others continued to cling to the old man?

She had just managed to appease the old man in the last two days, barely restoring the harmony they used to have.

Seeing Ke Meiyu enter the room, she turned around and followed, openly requesting to listen in.

When the old man saw her, he smiled and said, "You're such a busy person! What have you been up to lately? Come on, let's go into the study and talk."

He also told the housekeeper to cut a watermelon and get a bottle of soda.

Meanwhile, her granddaughter Zhao Fanghua was completely ignored!

"Grandpa Zhao, where did you put Grandpa Di?" Ke Meiyu asked curiously, holding a slightly chilled soda she had taken out of the refrigerator.

"I've temporarily placed him in a nursing home, but I've applied for a temporary bodyguard to accompany him around the clock." Old Master Zhao shook his head and said, "My home is also a mess. Which of my daughters-in-law, granddaughters-in-law, and granddaughters is easy to deal with?"

"If they say anything unpleasant, I won't have the face to face Lao Di."

"So, I'm not waiting for your grand nursing home plan?"

Ke Meiyu chuckled and handed over the proposal she was carrying with her, saying, "Take a look."

Grandpa Zhao touched a thick stack of booklets filled with densely packed words. He took out his reading glasses, put them on, and began to read through them word by word.

The more she looked at him, the higher his eyebrows rose. After Ke Meiyu finished drinking the six bottles of soda that the nanny brought up, and then ate a large watermelon by herself, she even took a nap.

After the old man finished reading, he smiled and nodded repeatedly: "How did you grow your brain?"

"You just come up with an idea, and others do the rest, but the money ends up in your pocket. They become the ones who get sold out by you and still help you count the money."

"You've come to me, what are you going to do to sell me out?"

His eyes then fell on a basket of watermelon rinds and empty bottles, and he said with a smile, "You're quite the ladies' man."

Ke Meiyu pursed her lips: "You're not being polite to me at all, why should I be polite to you?"

"It's not about selling, it's about getting you involved."

Old Master Zhao was surprised, "You want me to join? I'll get a share of the money too?"

"According to your plan, although nursing homes are divided into public welfare and profit-making types, you should be able to make a fortune. Are you sure you want me to get a share?"

"How can I help you? Where would I put my own interests aside?"

Ke Meiyu said with a smile, "Aren't you a big tree? With a big tree protecting me, I can enjoy the shade!"

Old Master Zhao's smile vanished, and he said calmly, "You silly girl, I don't even protect my own family. Do you think I would use my last connections for you?"

The old man was different from other farmers or workers who had made great contributions to get to where he was. He had a high starting point; although the Zhao family couldn't compare to the Qin family, they were still a well-known family in Beijing.

The Zhao family has a deep foundation, which is not only in terms of money and connections, but also in the fact that each head of the family has a very accurate grasp of risk assessment and judgment.

Unfortunately, those were turbulent times, and the Zhao family members either died, fled, or scattered. Those who survived donated the vast majority of their assets.

The tallest tree catches the most wind, and the old man understood this principle well, so he always adhered to a low-key approach to his work.

The Zhao family line can be said to have ended with him. The remaining offspring either went astray or were mediocre and controlled by their wives; none of them were anything but troublesome.

He has lived to this age and retired from his important position.

There's an old Chinese saying: "When people leave, the tea grows cold."

He's no longer in that position. Even though he helped and promoted many people in the past, as time went on, his initial gratitude faded.

Grandpa Zhao isn't a saint. He may dislike his own family, but they are still his blood relatives, and he can't completely ignore them.

He can use his connections to help everyone in his family find satisfactory jobs, and then what?

None of the kids in this family are capable; they're all just people who can't handle the job.

It's better to not let them have such high hopes in the first place than to praise them too highly and then let them fall hard.

Furthermore, the connections he has aren't actually capable of accomplishing much; they're only useful as a precaution, and each one he uses is one less available. Who knows if these troublesome individuals might do something outrageous in the future?
